COMPARATIVE INVESTIGATION OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) ORIENTED TEACHING AWARENESS, DISPOSITION AND COMPETENCE BETWEEN MIDDLE AND UPPER BASIC SCIENCE TEACHERS IN NIGERIA
The application of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to various fields of human endeavour has assumed a new dimension in this 21st century. Teaching as a profession is not left out. The ICT awareness, disposition and the competence of teachers, who are transforming agents in schools play important roles in ICT-oriented teaching and learning. There might be differences in these identified factors among teachers at various educational levels which can be investigated. This study therefore compared the ICT oriented teaching awareness, disposition and competence of middle and upper basic science teachers. Two group randomized subjects non-experimental design was adopted using causal comparative approach in this study. Multi-stage and stratified sampling techniques were employed to select participating Science teachers from middle and upper basic schools in Ogun state, Nigeria. Information and Communication Technology Status Scale comprises ICT Awareness (r=0.65), ICT Disposition (r=0.81) and ICT Competence (r=0.93) sub-scales was used for data collection. Descriptive statistics and independent t test were used for data analysis. It was found that higher percentages were recorded for upper basic science teachers in ICT oriented teaching awareness, disposition and competence than their counterparts in middle basic schools. It was in ICT awareness only that significant difference of means (upper basic =5.66) and middle basic = 4.66) was observed t(457) = -3.55, p <.05. Significant difference of means was not recorded on either disposition or competence. Based on the findings of this study, it is therefore recommended that teachers should be trained and retrained on ICT oriented teaching to block the existing gaps among them. Provision of ICT oriented teaching and learning facilities by the school owners into the classrooms is equally recommended
HOUSEHOLD EDUCATION EXPENDITURE AS CORRELATE OF ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN OSUN STATE, NIGERIA
This study investigated the influence of household education expenditure (learning materials, transportation, food items and extra lesson expenses) on the academic performance of Senior Secondary School (SSS) students in Osun State, Nigeria. Descriptive research design was adopted. The state was stratified in line with the existing three senatorial districts, with each having 10 local government areas. Four local government areas, representing 40%, were randomly selected from each senatorial district. There were 142 public senior secondary schools in the 12 sampled local government areas. Forty per cent of the schools were randomly selected per local government totaling 56.Random sampling technique was used to select 40% of SSS III students per school, totaling 3,304 Parents and students filled their respective components of the instruments. The instruments titled: “Household Education Expenditure Scale” (r=0.97); “Student English Language Performance Test” (r=0.89) and “Student Mathematics Performance Test” (r=0.88) were used. Five hypotheses were tested (p = 0.05). Data were analysed using Pearson product moment correlation and multiple regression at 0.05 level of significance. Household expenditure on learning materials (r = 0.099; p<0.05), extra lesson (r = 0.169; p<0.05) and transportation (r = 0.16; p<0.05) had significant positive relationship with academic performance while expenditure on food items (r = -0.26; p < 0.05) was negatively related. Household education expenditure on feeding had significant negative contribution to academic performance (? = -0.292; t= -10.050; p<0.05), while expenditure on learning materials had significant positive contribution (? = 0.070; t= 2.909; p<0.05). Others had no significant contributions to academic performance. Household expenditure on learning materials positively influenced academic performance while expenditure on food items had negative influence. The study recommended that household should spend more on learning materials and less on feeding at school to improve academic performance of public secondary school students
THE ROLE OF CIVIC EDUCATION IN PROMOTING PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE AND SUSTAINABILITY DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIAN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM
Generally, the term conflict, have impaired and affected critically the state of peace and development in the Nigerian educational system through recent killings from the Boko Haram. This makes the issue of peace seems to be on a decline state in the contemporary Nigerian society and as a result, have affected her its ability to meet up its target goal and also poses fear for the future development of the educational system. Therefore, the place of Civic Education in fostering peace and sustainability development in the state of Nigeria educational system is inevitable. This paper addressed why Nigerian education at each level be exposed to various culture, values, ethics, standard and democratic knowledge that makes a civil society. The diversities nature of Nigeria fosters the need to work together with different groups to have a functional economy and social system. It was suggested that students should be exposed early enough to Civic Education to enable them acquire knowledge and skills in order to imbibe peaceful behaviors. Also, Civic Education teachers should encourage the pupil to form civic and political clubs and Peace education should be made compulsory at all levels of the education system. Ministry of education and curriculum planers should implement peace education initiatives at a local level and national level. The social media especially the television can be channeled into broadcasting of programmes that will teach the children about their rights and the proper behaviours expected in a civil society
SUPPLY OF SKILLS IN PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES AS A CORRELATE OF SKILLS DEMANDED BY EMPLOYERS IN SOUTHWESTERN NIGERIA
Skills supply in various institutions of learning has become source of concern to employers in Nigeria. There have been complaints of inadequacy of required skills by employers which hinders the growth of organisation and threaten economic development of nations. Relating skills supplied in private universities with skills demanded by employers among private universities graduates form the basis for the study. Survey research design of ex-post facto type was adopted while Multistage sampling procedure was used. Purposive sampling technique was used to sample 10 (60%) private universities that have graduated students for minimum of eight years in Southwestern Nigeria. Also, 55 (70%) faculties were randomly selected while all the 173 Head of Departments (HoDs) in the sampled faculties were used, while 173 Human Resource Managers (HRMs) of organisations in Communication, Banking, Education, Health, Judiciary, Manufacturing/Construction and Agriculture sectors were sampled to determine skills demanded by employers. Instruments used were QSSRFPU (r = 0.81) and SDEAPUG (r = 0.89). Results revealed that demand for analytical (3.43); creative (3.18) and collaborative (3.16) skills were higher than supply (2.89, 2.93 and 2.90) respectively, while communication skill was the equilibrium point where demand was equal to supply (3.5 = 3.5). There was significant difference in skills demanded by employers in different sectors of the economy (t = 2.392; df = 171; P < 0.05), while there was no significant difference in skills supplied by private universities (t = 2.392; df = 171; P > 0.05). It was concluded that the level of skills demanded was higher than supply. Based on the findings, it was recommended that management of private universities should improve on the skills supplied to labour market through their graduates. There should be feedback from employers to universities on the new trend of needs in labour market
CORONA VIRUS (COVID - 19) PANDEMIC AND HALTING OF EDUCATION ACTIVITIES IN OYO WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF OYO STATE: DEVELOPMENTAL IMPLICATIONS AND THE WAY FORWARD
This study investigated Corona Virus (COVID-19) pandemic and how it halted education activities in Oyo West Local Government Area of Oyo State with its developmental implications and way forward. The design for the study was a descriptive survey type. The population of the study was all residents in Oyo West Local Government Area (LGA) of Oyo State. Multi-stage Sampling Technique was adopted to sample respondents. The sampling for the study was done in 20 areas within the LGA through simple random sampling technique during which 20 people were selected. A total of four hundred (400) respondents were used for the study. An instrument titled “Corona Virus and Education Activities Questionnaire (CVEAQ)” was used to collect data. To validate the instrument, face, content and construct validity were carried out on the instrument by giving it to experts in the field of Educational Management and Teacher Education for scrutiny. Test and retest method was used and a reliability co-efficient of 0.85 was obtained. Simple percentage was used to analyse the three research questions. The findings revealed that the pandemic affected the educational activities and this had halted the teaching and learning processes in the study area. It was thus suggested that governments at all levels should provide adequate medical treatment nationwide and implement measures that will limit the number of people congregating in public places, there is the need for provision of palliatives for those that are less privileged and need to obey the health directives to save guard the spread of such pandemic in the futur
Use of Agro-Industrial Waste (Brewer's Dried Grain) to Substitute Maize in the Diet of African Catfish Clarias gariepinus
Abstract
This study was carried out to assess the nutrient utilization and growth response of juvenile catfish fed diet with maize replaced with agroindustrial waste. One hundred and fifty Clarias gariepinus juvenile (5.21±0.14g) were randomly assigned to five diets formulated such that brewery waste replaced maize at 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%, respectively and fed at 5% body weight. Evaluation of nutrient utilization and growth parameters of the experimental fish followed standard methods as based on feed intake, weight gain, feed conversion ratio, specific growth rate, relative growth rate, daily weight gain, gross feed conversion efficiency, protein efficiency ratio and evaluation of the economic cost. The result showed that there was no significant difference (p>0.05) in the weight gain of the fish among treatments. Control (0%) diet had the highest mean weight gain of 9.69g while the least weight gain was obtained from 20% dietary treatment which recorded a value of 7.40g. This experiment revealed that brewer's dried grain can be tolerated by C. gariepinusjuveniles, there was weight gain at 40% growth rate. Feed intake was affected by the brewer's waste that replaced maize and fish performed well even at the highest level of replacement (40%). The lowest cost for the production of a kg weight gain was from the treatment with replaced maize grain with 40%. Considering the performances of the experimental fish and the cost per kg weight gain, it is advantageous to use brewer's waste as an additional feed in the feed mix or a sole supplementary feed. The study has shown that agroindustrial by-product can replace maize in the diet of Clarias gariepinus
Antidiarrhoeal Properties of Acacia Nilotica Leaves on Ileum of Guinea Pig and Castor Oil-induced Diarrhoea in Rats.
Acacia nilotica is a dicotyledonous plant used in traditional medicine in Nigeria and Senegal for treating stomach and intestinal disorders. The antispasmodic activity of the leaf extract was assessed on contraction of isolated ileum of Guinea pig induced by acetylcholine and amechol. The effect of the leaf extract of Acacia nilotica on castor oil induced diarrhoea in rats and was undertaken. The study showed that Acacia nilotica is a good relaxant of Guinea pig isolated ileum. In addition to antispasmodic activity in vitro, the leaves extract inhibited castor oil-induced diarrhoea in rats. The LD50 was also calculated to be 1890mg/kg which is higher than the minimum recommended according to the Hodgel and Sternel scale. The inhibition effect of contractile activity of the ileum is basis for the treatment of some gastrointestinal disorder. The result showed that the plant leaves have clinical benefits in the treatment of diarrhoea and dysentery related diseases
Variation in Onset and Cessation of the Rainy Season in Ibadan, Nigeria
The need to understand changes in rainfall characteristics associated with climate variability and change in tropical Africa has become very important since the livelihoods of a majority of the population depend on climate-sensitive activities. The onset and cessation dates of rainfall is of utmost significance to agriculture in many West African countries because the sector is largely rain-fed. The paper examines annual variations and patterns in the onset and cessation dates; as well as the length of the rainy season in Ibadan for the period 1981-2010. A modification of the method employed by Jolliffe and Saria-Dodd was adopted for the determination of the onset of the wet season. The mean onset date of the rainy season for the study period is the 125th day in the year while the mean cessation date is the 306th day in the year. The determined mean onset date of the rainy season for the period of study is later than that estimated for earlier climatological period. A comparative analysis of the rainy season characteristics for two time slices within the study period, 1981-2000 and 2001-2010, show differences in mean onset and cessation dates for the rainy season and a corresponding reduction in the length of the rainy season during the latter period. The difference between the means of the length of the rainy season during the two periods was shown to be significant. The emerging pattern of the characteristics of the rainy season has important implications for agricultural practice in the region
Statistics: A Quintessential Tool in Development of Scientific Theory
Science is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable hypothesis, explanations and predictions about a phenomenon or the universe. The ultimate purpose of science is for growth and development of human conditions and through scientific research that employs the proper use and application of statistical methods. However, researchers usually take for granted a set of basic statistical assumptions and tests required to justify their method and results. This paper discusses the position of statistics in science, its relevance in the development of scientific theory. It provides brief explanations on correct use and appropriateness of some statistical techniques in research theory in order to achieve sustainable development. The concepts of the process of research and development of scientific theory were re-examined
