    Get PDF
The paper examines the recent trend in school management. it takes into account the concept of participating, cooperative and collaborative management. The informal types of education (home and apprenticeship) were initially sufficient for youth. Today however, modern diversification in technology and education, appear to have exerted some form of complex influence on the culture of the community. Given the nature of this perceived complexity, the informal education seems to be inadequate to cope with modern challenges. This calls for an urgent need to position the formal education system to facilitate effective cultural transmission in the modern age

Mathematics is part of the basic requirements for entrance into the different stages of higher educational system. It is the bedrock of all science and technologically-based subjects. Yet, it remains a challenging subject to students at the secondary school level. Hence, the purpose of this study was to investigate the correlational study of self-concept and study habit on mathematics anxiety among secondary school students in Oyo North Senatorial District, Nigeria. Descriptive research design of ex-post-facto type was used in the study. 186 respondents were selected from four Local Government areas in Oyo North, Nigeria. The respondents were measured with relevant standardized scale (instruments) and the data obtained were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) and Multiple regression statistical analysis. Three research Questions were raised and answered in the study. Findings revealed that Mathematics anxiety correlated with gender (r = .137; p<.05); self-concept (r = .817; p<.05) and study habit (r = .901; p<.05). Moreover, the independent variables when pulled together have significant contribution to students’ Mathematics anxiety (R (adjusted) =.938 & R2 (adjusted) =.877) and each of the independent variables made a significant contribution to the prediction of students’ Mathematics anxiety. In term of magnitude of contribution, study habit made the most significant contribution (Beta= .176; t= .963; P<0.05) to the prediction follow by self-concept (Beta= .115; t= 1.391; p<0.05). It was recommended that counselling interventions addressing mathematics anxiety should be provided for students regularly in order to reduce incidence of mathematics anxiety amongst them

The study examined the influence of socio-economic status of parents on the academic performance of secondary school students in Ogun state, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design of the ex-post facto type was adopted for the study. A total of 400 secondary school students were randomly selected from 10 sampled schools of both private and public schools in Obafemi Owode and Sagamu Local Government Areas in Ogun State. A self designed questionnaire was used to collect information (r=0.72). Pearson Product Moment Correlation and independent t-test were used to analyse the data obtained from the respondents at 0.05 probability level. Findings showed that there is a significant relationship between parents’ socio-economic status and students’ academic performance (r=0.106, p<0.05). It was also revealed that there is a low, positive and significant relationship between parental concern and academic performance of students in senior secondary school (r=0.258, p<0.05). A significant mean difference was also found between the academic performance of day and boarding students (t (df=398) =3.805, p<0.05). Therefore, it was recommended that government and other stakeholders in secondary education should design scholarship schemes to help the brilliant students from low and medium socio economic status. Parents and guardians should encourage their wards to have the right disposition to academic pursuit irrespective of their socio-economic background

The study adopted the descriptive survey research design of the ex-post facto type, while the population was male and female distance learners, distance education facilitators, community representatives and change agents in rural-urban areas of Ibadan North West Local Government Area of Oyo State and Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State. Purposive sampling technique was used to sample 397 respondents, while Distance Education in Rural Areas Preserving the Strength of the Community Questionnaire” (DERAPSCQ) was administered on the respondents. Face, construct and content validation of the instrument was carried out, and its reliability value was r=0.93. Chi-Square and t-test statistics were used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings showed that: there was a significant relationship between distance education programme and development of rural-urban areas (X2 = 1.97, P<.05); distance education programme had significant difference on community development of rural-urban dwellers that are exposed to distance education compared to rural-urban dwellers that are not exposed to distance education programme (t=.57; df=395; p<.05). Additionally, choice of distance education programme had significant difference on community development of rural-urban dwellers that are involved in distance education programme and those that are not involved on the programme (t=5.21; df-71; p<.05). The study recommended that stakeholders and government should continually expose rural-urban dwellers to distance education programme because of its positive development impact in the areas of expansion, growth and progress recorded in the rural-urban areas. Also, provision of distance education should be embraced by the rural-urban dwellers since it led to desirable choice among those involved in Distance Education Programme
