LEADERSHIP MANAGERIAL ROLE AS DETERMINANT OF STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN HIGH SCHOOLS IN OSUN STATE, NIGERIA
This study investigated high school principals’ ability to perform managerial role as determinant of students’ academic achievement in Osun State. Three research questions were developed to guide the study. The study adopted ex-post facto design of survey research type in which 124 principals of high schools in Osun State were purposively selected. Data was collected using a self-designed questionnaire. Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Multiple Regression were utilised for data analysis at 0.05level of analysis. The study’s finding revealed that the managerial roles of principals had no significant composite influence on students’ academic performance [F (5,241) = 0.985]. (R) = 0.142 and, R square of 0.020. That is, academic achievement of students in schools had no correlation with principals’ roles. This means that 1.0% (Adj. R2=0.010) of the variance in the academic achievement in schools accounted for the independent variables, when taken together. Also, managerial role has no significant relative influences on students’ academic performance. Planning (? = 0.003, t= .025, p> 0.05) has no potent contribution to the prediction, organising role has no significant influence (? = 0.086, t= .794, p> 0.05) and directing had no significant influence (? = 0.029, t= 0.293, p> 0.05). The study, therefore, recommended that school principals in the state should endeavour to discharge their managerial roles or functions in such a way that will create positive impact on students’ academic achievement
HIGHER EDUCATION’S CONSCIOUSNESS TO EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS: PANACEA TO GRADUATE UNEMPLOYMENT IN NIGERIA
Today, employability skills are the most required skills in the labour market in an attempt to get job and sustain it. Regrettably, graduates from Nigerian universities lack the needed skills to enter into the workforce due to the skill-deficiency in the higher institutions’ curricula. Many concerned individuals observed that the rate of unemployment was increasing because most graduates in the country lack the needed skills for employment. No wonder, the Labour statistics report of Nigeria during the fourth quarter, 2017 had it that 7.9 million Nigerian youths were currently unemployed. The Malaysian graduates faced such problems some years back, and their government intervened by rolling out several programmes and initiatives to combat lack of employability skills. Learning from the Malaysia employability initiatives; National Higher Education Strategic Plan (NHESP) and National Higher Education Action Plan (NHEAP) were introduced by the government to transform higher education system, and the situation changed for the better in the country. Nigeria government can take a leaf from this. This paper therefore recommended that, the Nigerian government should learn from the likes of Malaysia, Thailand, and the USA as how ro tackle the challenges of graduate employability so as to reduce unemployment among the graduates

However, this paper attempts to examine the critical issues in sustainable development through employment in Nigeria. To achieve this, the definition of sustainable development, the concept of sustainable development, the goals of sustainable development and the challenges of sustainable development were given. The need for employment was also highlighted before the exposition on the challenges of employment opportunity in Nigeria. It was concluded that there is need for sustenance of reforms on the part of government since a good reform is capable of making serious impact on entrepreneurship skills which is the catalyst of national development. The paper recommended that job creation should be regarded as a priority in government programmes and plans in order to address the gap between available job opportunities and job seekers in Nigeria. Indeed, there should be establishment of small-scale enterprises such as petty-trading as well as some businesses such as sales of phones and its accessories which will go a long way in combating unemployment among the people, hence, contributing to the sustainable development. Finally, preference should be given to human development since, it is noted that they are the factor that will bring the best of infrastructures and other resources meant for sustainable development
PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN CHILD CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: IMPLICATIONS FOR RESTRUCTURING A NATION
Most parents shy away from their responsibility of building the character of their children. Moral character usually indicates strategies for the maturation of individual child andherefore, parents possess the rights and responsibilities to educate their children in the culture of respect, integrity and self-control. Parents have many opportunities and tools for achieving the task to develop and encourage their children’s quality of good character. If parents can use the tools in their hands, they will have the joy and satisfaction of seeing their children grow into a person of integrity, compassion and personality. The paper deduced that, every child is but a reflection of his/her immediate environment. Lack of proper parental character building has brought about some contemptible activities today among the children It argued that children who lack the right kind of parental involvement in character development sometimes end up being unscrupulous. However, the paper suggested that proper child character development is the basis for restructuring the future of a nation like Nigeria
DISPOSITIONAL FACTORS IN ADJUSTMENT AMONG CADETS OF NIGERIAN MILITARY ACADEMY
Training outcomes of cadets in Nigerian military academy may be well determined by their adjustment capacity. The discouraging statistics of graduation rate (59%- 63% over a 5-year period) at the Nigerian Defence Academy reflect adjustment problem. This necessitated the need to investigate dispositional factors in adjustment of cadets in the Academy. The cross-sectional study was designed as a survey using questionnaires with scales for data collection. It involved a sample size of 63 drawn from cadets in their first to the fourth year (100L- 400L). The proposition that those who score higher on core self-evaluation will significantly report better adjustment than others was confirmed (t=-10.9, df=61, p<. 001). There was no significant difference in adjustment between cadets who attended military secondary schools and those from secular (civilian) secondary schools. It implied that self-esteem, emotional stability, generalized self-efficacy, and locus of control need to be considered in policy to prepare cadets to effectively cope in the academy. It was suggested that the current selection method which does not discriminate type of secondary school attended need to be a sustained policy. Finally, assessment of the dispositional factors in cadets during skill development programme would be necessary in order to adequately prepare them on the traits because they are significant factors in adjustment
