Discipline and punishment are Siamese twins that are indispensible to the control of secondary school students and achievement of educational goals in Nigeria. This paper examined teachers’ responsibilities in-loco parentis and the importance of maintaining discipline in Nigerian secondary schools. Since time immemorial, the doctrine of ‘in-loco parentis’ has empowered teachers to act in the place of parents to enable the control of students’ conduct. It therefore explained the meaning of the concepts “discipline in totality, its purpose, doctrine of in-loco parentis, and its usefulness in encouraging moral, physical, and intellectual development among secondary school students. It also emphasized punishment as a tool of student control and discipline, types of punishment, legality of punishment and the implications in schools. Finally, the study revealed the limitations of the doctrine in loco parentis, which are supported with some precedent cases at different courts.&nbsp

This paper examined the relationship between Information Communication Technology (ICT) and teaching-learning capacity in private secondary schools in Ibadan metropolis. The design adopted for the study was descriptive survey research design. The population of the study were teachers in Ibadan Metropolis Area of Oyo State. The study sampled five Local Government Areas in Ibadan Metropolis. Five private secondary schools were randomly selected in each Local government. This made up of 25 private secondary schools. However, five teachers were randomly selected in each school. A total a hundred and twenty-five (125) teachers made up the respondents for the study. Questionnaire tagged “Teachers’ Perceptions on ICT Questionnaire” (TPICTQ) were used to collect data. Descriptive statistics like frequency counts, simple percentage and Spearman Moment Correlation Analysis were used to test three hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that that there was a significant positive relationship between Information Communication Technology (ICT) and students’ academic performance. (r = 0.65; p<0.05), significant positive relationship between Information Communication Technology (ICT) and teacher capacity building (r = 0.93; p<0.05). It also showed that there was a significant positive relationship between Information Communication Technology (ICT) and teaching-learning process (r = 0.93; p<0.05). It is therefore recommended that the state government should regularly implement the module of ICT education in private secondary schools, education ministries have to dedicatedly address the set back facing ICT development and that teachers need to improve their teaching skills in computer by attending conferences and workshops, hence boost better instructional quality that would enhance the attainment of educational objectives in private secondary schools

Literacy skills (reading and writing) enhance opportunities in life.  This is no less true for individuals with blindness and fluent in Braille.  Unfortunately, because of technicalities and the expensive nature of Braille machines and papers, coupled with its accompanying stigmatization, person with visual impairment are at increased risk of reading failure and its devastating consequences.  Previous studies largely focused on adjustment, academic achievement of students with visual impairment, while there is paucity of literature on repeated Braille reading and reading speed. The study, therefore, examined the influence repeated Braille reading and reading speed had on the comprehension skill of students with visual impairment in Oniyere Grammar School, Ibadan, Nigeria. The design adopted for this study is the survey research design of the correlational type.  Purposive sampling technique was used to select the study area and the respondents. This is because the school (Oniyere Grammar School) is with high population of students with visual impairment.  A self developed comprehension passage transcribed into Braille was used as instrument for data collection.  Data were analysed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and multiple regression analysis at 0.05 level of significance.  Significant relationship exists between repeated Braille reading and comprehension. The study further shows that reading speed significantly influences comprehension (r=0.919).  There was significant composite effect of independent variables on the dependant variable (R2=0.990). There was relative significant contribution of the independent variables to the dependent variable (B=0.859, t=33.427).  However, reading speed indicates the more potent contributor followed by repeated Braille reading (B=0.150, t=5.822). Repeated Braille reading and reading speed influenced comprehension skill of students with visual impairment in Ibadan South East, Oyo State, Nigeria.  Therefore, teachers of students with visual impairment should encourage constant and continuous Braille reading which will aid reading speed and enhance comprehension of any given task

The study investigates the relationship between student enrolment and social costs of university education in Nigeria. The descriptive survey research design was used for the study. Four research questions were raised and answered through data analysis. An instrument titled University Social Cost Checklist (USCC) was used to collect data on student enrolment and recurrent and capital expenditures of federal universities from Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and National Universities Commission (NUC). Data collected were analysed using frequency counts and simple percentage. The study showed N 91,767.20 as average social cost in 2001. However, the cost increased by 137.6% in 2006 to N 218,023.91. Between 2006 and 2007, average social cost reduced by 34.6% to N. 142,538.86 This might not be unconnected with increase in student enrolment from 464,025 in 2006 to 610,072 as increase in student enrolment tends to reduce average social cost. Thereafter, average social cost continued to increase consistently from 2007. In 2010, average social cost was N321,072.63 owing to fluctuation in student enrolment in that year. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that the pattern of recurrent expenditure should be looked into to identify areas of excessive spending. Also, access to university education (federal universities) should be increased. Additionally, more federal universities should be established and the existing universities should be funded to increase their carrying capacities

The research investigated innovative teaching strategies, school quality as predictors of students’ achievement in junior secondary school civic education in Abeokuta metropolis. Multistage sampling techniques were adopted in selecting two Local government Areas in Abeokuta, five hundred (500) students offering Civic Education and thirty (30) teachers. Four research questions were raised and answered with three validated instruments; Innovative Teaching Method Questionnaire (r =.69); School Quality Questionnaire (r =.75); Civic Education Achievement Test (CEAT), guided the study. Data obtained were analysed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and multiple regressions at 0.05 level of significance. Results indicated that relationship exists between innovative teaching strategies and students’ achievement in civic education(r = .169, p < 0.05(.017)). Also, the finding revealed that school quality was significant on students’ achievement in civic education(r = .312, p < 0.05(.000)). Apart from, the earlier mentioned findings, all the variables jointly explained 10% of the variance observed in students’ achievement in civic education. Further, results showed, that school quality (? = .288, t 4.156, p < 0.05(.000)) contribute positively significant in the prediction of students’ achievement in civic education. However, innovative teaching strategies (? = 0.100, t 1.435, p > 0.05(.153)) contributed positively but insignificantly in the prediction of students’ achievement in civic education. This is an indication that school quality actually predicted students’ achievement in civic education. The paper therefore recommended that: teachers should be exposed to available innovative teaching strategies through workshop and seminars to ensure desirable students’ achievement in civic education

An employee who has worked for an organization for some years is entitled to some benefits which could be in form of gratuity and pension payable to such employee by its employer or an agent at the time of retirement or withdrawal of service. This paper examined how contributory pension funds contribute to the financial security of civil servants in Ogun State. The descriptive survey research design of the ex-post facto type was used for the study. The population of the study was made up of civil servants in Ogun State, Nigeria. Purposive and random sampling techniques were used to select one hundred and eighty respondents from five ministries/departments. The main instrument used was a self-constructed questionnaire tagged “Contributory Pension Fund and Workers Financial Security in Ogun State, Nigeria” with three sub-sections. Mean, Standard deviation and One-way Analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to analyze the data collected at 0.05 level of significance. Findings of the study show the contributory pension scheme has a significant effect on workers’ savings. Also, contributory pension scheme has significant effect on workers’ investment. Based on these findings, recommendations are: pension fund administrators should educate the public more; especially the civil servants on contributory pension scheme so that they can have more implicit trust in the savings plans of the commission. Also, there should be an increase in investment outlets of pension funds to ensure that investible pension funds are not limited to few investment classes which might lead to diminution of income of employees
