THE SOCIO-RELIGIOUS IMPLICATIONS OF ILE?? DI?DA? – COVENANT BREAKING IN THE CONTEMPORARY YORU?BA? SOCIETY
Ìmùlè? – covenant - is one of the tools, mechanisms and techniques used in the olden days in Yoru?ba?land to run various spheres of life in the society. These spheres of live include economy, politics religion. Through Ìmùlè?, friendship, brotherly love, trust, justice and confidence are entrenched. However, in the society today, it is rare to find those things mentioned above. Brotherly love has been replaced with hatred, spouses no longer trust themselves, justice is perverted, and people do not have confidence even in things spiritual. Promises are no longer kept as oath- taking has become mere window dressing. One no longer knows who is a friend or who is an enemy. The society is in disarray all because people no longer stick to Ìmùlè?. Failure or refusal to keep to any Ìmùlè? entered into is what the Yoru?ba? call “Ile?? di?da?.” – breaking of covenant. Ile?? di?da? is a sacrilegeous among the people. This paper addressed Ìmùlè? (making of covenant) and Ile?? di?da? (breaking of covenant) as understood by the Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria
SIMILAR LANGUAGE POLICIES, DIFFERENT MANAGEMENT STYLES, DIFFERENT RESULTS: NIGERIA AND PAPUA NEW GUINEA IN COMPARISON
The mother tongue based multilingual policy in education is stipulated in the Nigerian National Policy on Education. This is a natural fall-out from the ample evidence in research that early education given in children’s mother tongues provides more solid foundations for commendable academic success later in life than that given in borrowed languages. Literature is, however, replete with evidence of widespread non-compliance with the policy among Nigerians who demonstrate inordinate preference for the English language. The neglect of the policy stipulation has been found to be responsible for the ever-increasing rate of mass failure of Nigerian students. Papua New Guinea that records high rate of compliance with the same language policy in education experiences better academic achievement of students. The paper thus compares and contrasts language policy, management and practice issues in Nigeria with Papua New Guinea because of both countries’ multilingual nature. Both similarities and dissimilarities are found in the language policy management styles of both countries. Papua New Guinea, sometimes referred to as PNG, is found to manage the plurilingual situation much better than Nigeria. The Papua New Guinean government is found to have practised its language policy implementation in accordance with the principles of Language Management Theory from the field of Linguistics and Human Relations Theory from the field of Management. But Nigeria seemed to have been completely oblivious of such theories in its approach to language policy formulation and implementation, hence the great difference in success levels. The implications of the findings for Nigeria are also considered to point the way forward for the nation

EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES’ STATUS AS DETERMINANTS OF STUDENTS’ LEARNING OUTCOMES IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL GOVERNMENT IN OYO STATE, NIGERIA
Over the years, issues of poor academic performance of students both in examinations have been of grave concern to all stakeholders in the education industry. This study investigated the relationship between all categories of educational resources (human, financial and material resources) and Senior Secondary School students’ learning outcomes in Government in Oyo State. The study is a survey research that adopted multi-stage sampling technique. Data were collected from 450 SSS II Government students and 30 teachers from 30 public and private schools in Oyo State. Four research questions and two validated instruments guided the study with reliability coefficient of 0.67 for SERI and 0.86 for GAT. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Multiple Regression. Results revealed that human resources were reportedly the most available 300 (66.7%), while financial resources were the least obtainable educational resources in the secondary school. The rates of utilisation revealed that 271 (60.2%) respondents admitted to using available resources most times. Results further indicated that there were moderate relationships between availability and adequacy of utilisation of the various educational resources and students' learning outcome (r = 0.64). The three predictor variables jointly accounted for 62% (Adjusted R2 = 0.621) observed variance in students’ learning outcome in Government as it was statistically significant. It is recommended that all stakeholders in the school system should ensure availability, usability and adequacy of all educational resources since they all predict students' learning outcomes and ensure that they are always utilised optimally in the teaching-learning processes
