Multitasking og acting: helsefagarbeiderlærlingers strategier for å imøtekomme krav og forventninger
There is a growing need to recruit and retain health professionals. Much of the care has been transferred to the municipalities, hospital stays have decreased and patients are sicker when they return home. In this complex and emotional working context, the apprentices must develop as professionals. The health worker education and the community of practice must facilitate competence that makes students and apprentices able to meet the demands and expectations they encounter in the profession. The research question the article answers is: How do apprentices in the health profession experience demands and expectations during the apprenticeship in home nursing care?
Individual interviews and observations were considered an acceptable method. 12 apprentices and newly qualified health care professionals were interviewed individually. Two of the apprentices were followed and observed by the first author over 5 days in practice. The study shows how healthcare apprentices maneuver in a field consisting of different demands and expectations. In homecare nursing, the time of the individual patient is limited. They acquire organizational skills such as multitasking, acting, prioritizing, adapting and setting boundaries. This means that they perform several tasks at the same time, have double attention in situations, they hide internal stress, and they adapt to the patients at the same time as they prioritize and set limits. Skills that seem necessary both in the work of looking after a decision-based work list consisting of a varied and complex group of patients living at home, as well as necessary to be equipped as a future healthcare worker.
Recent health- and care policy documents in Norway highlight the potential of life stories as a key source of knowledge in care for the elderly, and a relevant tool in professional care work in the nursing home. What challenges and opportunities lie in life stories as a tool for care professionals? This article emerges from an interdisciplinary collaborative project between researchers in the fields of healthcare, social science, health sciences and the humanities, as well as students in nursing education. Our aim is to gain new knowledge about life stories as a tool for care workers in nursing homes, and what characterizes their design. Through a mapping of the prevalence of life stories as a tool for documentation and communication in nursing homes in a region of Vestlandet, we found great variation in the design of the forms used to document patients’ life stories. Through a comparative close reading of the forms’ stylistic designs and communication styles, we discuss the implications of what we see as a challenging blending of instrumental and relational purposes when using life stories in professional care.
Investigating the adjacent patient radiation dose received during a simulated ward chest X-ray examination: Patient radiation dose received from a chest X-ray
Introduction: A patient having a chest X-ray will inevitably be exposed to radiation from the primary beam. Using a light beam diaphragm (LBD) on the X-ray tube reduces scattered radiation at the X-ray tube through longitudinal and horizontal collimation. But not scattered secondary radiation resulting from interactions of the primary beam. This study aimed to investigate whether lead protection on simulated hospital ward inpatients (opposite and adjacent to a simulated chest X-ray examination) would change the secondary scattered radiation dose received.
Method: Two rando phantoms (simulated patients) were positioned at different distances from the simulated patient receiving the chest X-ray. The phantoms were positioned one metre adjacent (either side of the phantom being X-rayed) and two metres opposite. The scattered radiation dose to radiosensitive organs (thyroid, breast, and gonads) was recorded using Thermoluminescent Dosimeters (TLDs). Six exposures were conducted, three with lead protection and three without. The mean radiation dose and standard deviation were compared using a paired two-sample t-test for statistical significance (p>0.05).
Results: The lead protection reduced the radiation dose to the radiosensitive organs by 64%-100% (p=0.51-0.18) one metre adjacent and 65%-100% (p=0.65-0.18) two metres opposite. Noticeably the phantom two metres opposite had substantial individual organ dose reductions due to the distance from the primary beam.
Conclusion: Lead aprons, thyroid collars, and distance reduced the radiation dose to the radiosensitive organs of the surrounding phantoms (simulated patients) from an adjacent chest X-ray examination and present opportunities for dose reduction techniques during ward chest X-ray examinations
Antecedents to Faroese student teachers’ citizenship behaviour : A study of empirical relationships
The school is an important institution in Faroese society, as elsewhere in the world. Among other things, schools must prepare students for further education, professional life, and their duties as citizens. The quality of teachers’ instruction is the most important factor influencing pupils’ learning. The concept of citizenship behaviour highlights the idea that student teachers have a responsibility not only to fulfil their duties but also to contribute to the well-being of their peers. Student teachers’ citizenship behaviour is assumed to influence the functioning of teacher education. Teacher education prepares student teachers and supplies schools with appropriately trained teachers. The purposes of this study are (1) to present an overview of Faroese teacher training, and (2) to explore the statistical relationships between Faroese student teachers’ motivational orientations and their citizenship behaviours. As expected, we find that intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation are related to citizenship behavior. Furthermore, we find that instructional self-efficacy is positively related to citizenship behaviour. Implications for practice and avenues for further research are discussed
Recent literature has, to a limited extent, explored the Europeanization of sub-national levels of governance, particularly in unitary states and/or closely integrated non-member states. This article examines the Europeanization of the final stages of decision-making processes in Norwegian regions (County Municipalities). By drawing empirically on a sub-national level of governance in a smaller unitary state and closely integrated non-member state, the article contributes to expanding the literature on “top-down” Europeanization with a “less likely case”. The study demonstrates how various policy areas are affected to varying degrees by Europeanization in the final stages of decision-making processes, with potential implications for cross-sectoral coordination and the actual governance of regional decision-making processes. Europeanization can, among other things, challenge cross-sectoral coordination by causing Europeanized “enclaves” within the county administrations to develop different decision-making behavior than other parts of the administrations. The article raises questions about whether Europeanization and multi-level administrative processes may weaken the possibilities for overall management of the comprehensive task portfolios of sub-national entities.
The article combines quantitative techniques (N=1109) with qualitative text analysis. Governing Professionals Through Discourses of Resilience and Value: A New Legitimation for Ontario Pharmacists
In a neoliberal turn, the government of Ontario cut more than $750 million in funds that were traditionally received by pharmacies through dispensing medication. These funds were replaced with a state-funded program that would reimburse pharmacists for professional services related to patient care. The problem facing professional elites from Ontario pharmacy’s advocacy body was how to govern members of a self-regulating profession to switch subjectivities (identities) from the traditional dispenser of medication to providing patient care for profit. We address a gap in the literature and pose the question, how are the rank and file of allied healthcare professions governed by professional elites to become responsibilized subjects who will adopt state/profession agendas? Using a Foucauldian governmentality framework, our findings reveal that the rank and file are governed by elites through two technologies: resilience and value making possible a new “legitimate” pharmacist subjectivity related to the market and health care sustainability
Greetings from Chile
I met Liv Merete Nielsen at the DRS Limerick 2018 conference. I was studying Chilean teachers\u27 use of design methods to solve pedagogical problems supported by a British Council fund. Peter Lloyd and Derek Jones brought the experience and vision of The Open University\u27s Design Thinking course. They had Nigel Cross as an unavoidable theoretical reference. I also knew Maureen Carroll and Shelley Goldman\u27s work at Stanford University to promote STEM disciplines in vulnerable schools in Palo Alto. Maureen and Shelley built on the IDEO-d.School universe and had Tim Brown and David Kelly as key references

The becoming of boats : Some reflections on choices in the process of reconstructing archaeological vessels
Reconstruction is an essential tool for gaining knowledge of shipwrecks in maritime archaeology. This paper examines some theoretical and practical consequences of viewing vessels not as finished objects but as things that are continuously being made during their lifetime. This is done by proposing perspectives on things that uphold their biography as an essential characteristic. To illustrate this, the 16th-century shipwreck Bispevika 16 (Oslo harbour) will be an example of a vessel showing minor and significant technical changes throughout its life. Its most manifest change is the addition of an outer layer of carvel planks on the lapstrake-built hull. This makes this vessel one of a growing number of archaeologically known converted lapstrake-built vessels in Northern Europe
