To Be or Not to Be Human: Human Enhancement – an Eternal Temptation
Exploring the architecture of the human mind manifest in storytelling, J.R.R. Tolkien noted that “the great mythical significance of prohibition” cast in fairy-story is depicted as “The Locked Door” which “stands as an eternal Temptation.”
This article asks – do human enhancement technologies tempt us to ignore a prohibition seemingly universal and somehow innate, an eternal Temptation, urging us to pry open the Locked door, a closed garden, and eat a forbidden fruit that promises to lift the strictures of human nature?
This article presents an overview of the basic characteristics of human enhancement and applies ethical principles drawn from Catholic social teaching to the legal and public policy controversies surrounding genetic and physical human enhancement technologies as well as the patent eligibility of human DNA segments. I argue that human enhancement technologies that assist but do not replace integral human nature contribute to human ecology while those that tempt us to go beyond the bounds of human nature contribute to a new eugenics
Humans and AI: differences, opportunities, threats Reflections around the Note Antiqua et nova
The article, drawing on the Vatican document Antiqua et nova and Leo XIV’s proclamation of his intention to confront the challenge of new digital technologies, addresses the relationship between natural intelligence, notably human intelligence, and artificial intelligence. In this context, the author further discusses transhumanism and the resulting concepts of human ‘enhancement’, contrasting them with the Christian vision of the human being created in God’s image. In the central section of the text, he analyses the concepts of human, animal and artificial intelligence, emphasising the key role played by intentionality, freedom and the relational dimension in distinguishing human intelligence from AI. Using, inter alia, the distinction between noûs [contemplative mind] and mêtis [practical intelligence], the author points out that AI possesses solely functional abilities, devoid of intentionality and of reference to a sense of meaning and values. Furthermore, in light of Antiqua et nova, the author discusses the opportunities and threats associated with the use of artificial intelligence in education, medicine, economy, communication, politics, and the military, as well as the risk of technocracy and deepening inequality. The article emphasises that AI should remain a tool that serves the human being, and its development requires ethical supervision, in which Christian anthropology can be of considerable assistance
American Legal Education: The Catholic Solution
The article examines structural deficiencies in American legal education, emphasizing the neglect of foundational inquiry into the nature and purpose of law. The author argues that the dominance of legal positivism and the abandonment of natural law traditions result in insufficient intellectual and ethical formation of future lawyers. This technocratic approach to legal training contributes to professional identity crises. The proposed solution is the reintroduction of Catholic legal philosophy—particularly the Thomistic concept of the common good—as a framework for understanding law more comprehensively. The case of Ave Maria School of Law illustrates the practical applicability of this educational model
Inspiracja zjednoczeniowa motywem Kongresów Welehradzkich (1907–1936)
The Slavic Apostles Cyril and Methodius left a priceless legacy throughout Europe in the 9th century that might be characterized as spiritual fraternity, equality and unity in the diversity of many nations. Their legacy from the time of undivided Christianity has never lost its power or ceased to have an impact. In Velehrad, proponents of the Cyrillomethodian unification ideas sought to make this point very evident, even in the first half of the 20th century, when ecumenical sensitivity was growing. The aim of this article is to provide a theological analysis of the significant aspects of the Velehrad Congresses dialogue project, in which Roman Catholics, Eastern Catholics and Orthodox of the Moscow tradition played key roles. The process of historical theological and ecumenical debate will be discussed in the first section. The liturgical foundation of the Church’s tradition, which unites the faithful, shall be the subject of the second section. The phenomenon of church unions, which have long been a source of contention and discussion in ecumenical dialogue, will be covered in the third section. The establishment of the framework for a sustainable and responsible unification approach is the theme of the fourth section.Słowiańscy Apostołowie Cyryl i Metody pozostawili w IX w. Europie wielki skarb – duchowe braterstwo, równość i jedność w różnorodności wielu narodów. Owo dziedzictwo z okresu niepodzielonego chrześcijaństwa nigdy nie straciło swojej mocy ani siły oddziaływania. Przypominali o tym wyraźnie zwolennicy cyrylometodiańskich idei zjednoczeniowych w dobie wzrastającej wrażliwości ekumenicznej w pierwszej połowie XX w. w Welehradzie. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest teologiczna wykładnia istotnych aspektów projektu dialogicznego Kongresów Welehradzkich, podczas których główną rolę odegrali katolicy rzymscy i wschodni oraz wyznawcy prawosławni tradycji moskiewskiej. W pierwszej części zwrócono uwagę na proces historycznej debaty teologicznej i ekumenicznej. Druga część dotyczy liturgicznego źródła tradycji Kościoła, które we właściwy sobie sposób jednoczy wiernych. W trzeciej części został podjęty temat unii kościelnych, stanowiący od dawna element sporu i kontrowersji w dialogu. W czwartej części wskazano na podstawy trwałej i odpowiedzialnej perspektywy zjednoczeniowej
Dane osobowe w procesie komercjalizacji wyników działalności naukowej
The process of commercializing scientific research results involves extensive processing of personal data of creators, research participants, and business partners. The article analyzes the obligations of universities under the GDPR, in particular those relating to establishing the legal basis for processing, data minimization, pseudonymization, and ensuring information security. It also presents the role of universities as controllers, processors, or joint controllers, and the obligations associated with each of these roles. The authors draw attention to the need to take data protection principles into account in the design of new technologies and services (privacy by design and by default), as well as to the growing importance of appropriate procedures, training, data protection officer supervision, and technical measures. It is emphasized that compliance with the GDPR is not only a legal obligation, but also an element that builds trust among partners and increases the competitiveness of universities in the area of research and technology transfer.

This study explores the mutual influences between two East-Central European medieval royal cities, Košice and Kraków, focusing on the adoption of specific models in urban administration and economic organization. Košice, an important trading center in the Kingdom of Hungary, maintained close ties with Kraków, the hub for merchants and capital of the Kingdom of Poland. The study analyzes migration patterns between the towns, the organization of markets, and administrative structures. It focuses on similarities between the guilds of wealthy merchants, the layout of marketplaces, and the existence of the Lohnherren office in both towns. The aim is to promote further comparative research and a deeper understanding of the interconnection of urban communities in medieval Europe.Niniejsze studium analizuje wzajemne wpływy między dwoma królewskimi miastami Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej w średniowieczu: Koszycami i Krakowem, koncentrując się na przyjmowaniu konkretnych modeli administracji miejskiej i organizacji gospodarczej. Koszyce, ważny ośrodek handlowy w Królestwie Węgier, utrzymywały bliskie kontakty z Krakowem – centrum kupiectwa i stolicą Królestwa Polskiego.
