Isaac Newton (1642-1727)
On the additive inverse eigenvalue problem
The problem of determining the eigenvalues of a given matrix A is one of long-standing and wide application in many areas of science and engineering. By contrast, the problem of determining all or some of the entries of A fron spectral information is a new subject which has only recently become an active area of research. We quote Z. Bohte [2], (p. 385, 1967): "For the numerical solution of this problem a number of techniques have been used without sufficient theoretical consideration. We believe the problem has not attracted the attention of the mathematicians yet"
Convergence of roundary element methods for numerical solutions of Fourier problems
Convergence proofs are given for the projection based boundary element methods for the numerical solution of various Fourier problems in regions with smooth compact boundaries. Volterra integral equations of the 2nd kind are formulated with associated integral operators mapping the space of continuous functions on a compactum into itself. The compactness of these operators ia shown, yielding the error estimates in supremum norme for a wide class of projection based BEMs. Extensions of the error analysis to the initial -boundary value problems of convective heat conduction are also discussed
Results on the Chebyshev method in banach spaces
In this paper, under standard Newton-Kantorovich conditions, we establish the Kantorovich-type convergence theorem for Chebyshev method in Banach spaces
A new Pretov-Galerkin scheme for the two-point boundary value problem
This paper introduces a new asymptotically convergent Petrov-Galerkin method for solving the two-point boundary value problem. The procedure is based on an appropriate combination of a Dirichlet-Neumann mapping and a saddle point variational formulation of the original problem, which yields a bilinear form satisfying the usual Gårding inequality. The corresponding discrete scheme is defined in the usual manner but replacing the Dirichlet-Neumann mapping by its associated finite element approximation. The solvability of the Galerkin equations is proved, and asymptotic error estimates are provided. Further, a particular case of this new scheme can be viewed as a preconditioning technique for the discrete formulation of the saddle point problem. Finally, the matrix formulation is discussed and several numerical experiments are included
Block diagonalization of systems with measurable coefficients
In this paper we show that, previous results given by Coppel concerning the existence of projection matrix P, and a change of variable x = S(t)y reducing system x = A(t)x, where A(t) is a continuous matrix function, to the form y= A(t)y, with the property P A(t) = A(t)P, can be extended to the case when A(t) is a locally integrable function
Products of power weights and Ap weights
Sufficient conditions are given for a product of an Ap wcight and, a power weight to belong to the Ap class of weights. These are generalizations to Rn of R results given by Murkenhoupt, Wheeden, and Yung
