A Proposal of Data Mining Model for the Classification of an Act of Violence as a Case of Attempted Femicide in the Peruvian Scope
Nowadays, femicide is one of the biggest problems worldwide in which the human rights of the victims are violated. In addition, it also constitutes a public health concern, with serious physical and psychological consequences. The objective of this research is to implement a data mining model to classify an act of violence as a case of attempted femicide in Peru. This study used public data of 2021 of the statistics portal National Aurora Program of the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations (MIMP). The applied methodology was based on 5 phases: Data collection, data understanding, data preprocessing, data mining and model evaluation. Results obtained with Balanced Random Forest and Logistic Regression models demonstrated the best performances with a Recall of 0.88 and 0.86, respectively. Furthermore, the application of SMOTE improved the performance of both models. This investigation will contribute to find patterns related to the characteristics of aggressors and victims, that can help to put into action new instruments based on Data Mining to prevent more murders of women.KeywordsAttempted FemicideBalanced Random ForestClassification ModelData MiningFeature selectionLight GBMLogistic regressionSMOT
Economic development and market impact of radical innovation on the food industry via TT U-I
The adoption of open innovation by the food industry is on the rise, seeking research and development (R&D) through technology transfer from the university. Radical innovations are relevant for agribusiness and can lead to major changes and generate benefits. This study investigated the economic development and market impact of a radical innovation in the food industry via technology transfer university-industry (TT U-I), based on the contingent effectiveness model of TT. The TT innovation in this study regards the discovery of a molecule that is capable of extending shelf life of pre-processed food. The results showed effects of the innovation that the Model had not plotted, namely revenue extended to supply and productive chains, profitability beyond the enterprise, TT as a source of incremental innovations, vast potential to create new jobs and new businesses, international economic impact, and return of licenses to the agent (university), which promoted investments in new TT processes. Modelo de simulación de apendicectomía abierta en la educación virtual para estudiantes de medicina durante la pandemia de COVID-19; [Open appendectomy simulation model in virtual education for medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic]
Objective: To evaluate the skills achieved by the undergraduate medical student in performing an open appendectomy and purse string in the simulation model created, to evaluate the degree of satisfaction of its use and to determine its costs. Method: Pre-experimental, prospective and longitudinal study. The skills achieved by 24 undergraduate medical students in performing an open appendectomy and purse string in the simulator were evaluated using the OSATS (Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skills) through virtual teaching. A survey was conducted to the students to evaluate the simulator and its costs were determined. Results: There was a significant increase in the OSATS of the skills achieved, from 7 (pre-test) to 26 ± 5.71 points (final post-test) (p = 0.0001) and reduction in the operative time from 12 ± 3.81 minutes (first post-test) to 8 ± 2.02 minutes (final post-test) (p = 0.0001). 41% of the students were totally satisfied with the achievements obtained and 59% partially satisfied. The cost of the simulator was 4.64 USD. Conclusions: The students achieved an improvement in their skills in the surgical technique. This simulation model is low cost and presents an adequate level in the satisfaction of the achievements obtained by the students. © 2023 Academia Mexicana de Cirugía
Market segmentation in urban tourism: A study in Latin America
This study aims to analyze the different segments of urban tourism demand. The data were collected in Mexico City, Lima, Buenos Aires, and Bogota, and a K-means clustering method was used to find the segments. The results showed three segments: the first cluster grouped tourists interested in enjoying lodging and restaurant services; the second included visitors seeking multiple attractions, who were the most willing to recommend the destinations; finally, the third was composed of passive tourists, not drawn to the attractions of these cities. This study contributes to the literature by offering evidence of urban tourism segmentation in Latin American cities, which has been scarcely researched. Furthermore, it sheds light on this topic by finding a segment not previously described in the literature ("multiple attractions"). Finally, this study offers practical implications for managers of tourism companies to plan and improve the competitiveness of destinations based on the different segments found
Descifrando El Mundo Contable - Contabilidad PARA NO CONTADORES
Perceived value and its relationship to satisfaction and loyalty in cultural coastal destinations: A study in Huanchaco, Peru
Coastal tourism offers a wide variety of activities related to nature and culture in a sustainable environment. The present study in a coastal destination with cultural characteristics aims to (i) establish the dimensions of perceived value, (ii) determine the relationship between perceived value and satisfaction, and (iii) identify the relationship between perceived value and loyalty in variables such as return, recommendation, and word of mouth in a cultural coastal destination. This quantitative research used a sample of 384 valid questionnaires collected in Huanchaco, Peru, a city next to the Pacific Ocean, being a coastal destination with cultural potential. Factor analysis and multiple regression were applied for data analysis. The results show three dimensions of value perceived by tourists in coastal destinations: emotional and social value, economic value, and functional value. Of these, emotional and social value is the most salient predictor of tourist satisfaction and loyalty. These results will serve as management guides for cultural coastal destination managers and contribute to the academic literature
The social management canvas for the mining industry: A Peruvian case study
The objective of this research is to integrate social management components into a solid framework that illustrates any mining company's level social management responsiveness from social conflict to community development. To this end, qualitative research was conducted using case study methodology. Data were gathered from interviews, recordings, and documents and then analyzed to generate a framework for analysis. The result was a social management canvas with nine blocks: the social value propositions, the definition of the community, community participation, community management, key social resources, key social activities, key social partners, the social investment structure, and social benefits
Industry momentum in Latin America
Abstract: We examine whether high-return industries outperform low-return industries in Latin America. Differences in performance between recent winner and loser industries are very often indistinguishable from zero. Evaluating the segment of small and large industries also points us to a lack of return continuation across industries. Employing idiosyncratic returns instead of total returns to differentiate between winner and loser industries confirms that industry momentum does not hold in the region. Furthermore, momentum for individual industries is also absent. Overall, obtaining profits from persistent return differences between or within industries would have been very difficult in our sample period. JEL Classification: G11; G12; G15
Becoming a Multilatina: strategic capabilities as necessary conditions for the internationalization of Latin American firms
Purpose
This study aims to challenge the generic interpretation of Multilatinas as Latin American firms that have been able to internationalize because of highly competitive strategic capabilities. The authors test whether capabilities that international business researchers commonly associate with internationalization are necessary at different stages of the internationalization process to better understand the extent to which emerging market (EM) firms need to develop them.
Design/methodology/approach
International business research suggests a positive association between strategic capabilities and firm internalization. However, it remains unclear what specific capabilities are necessary and when they are necessary. These questions are particularly important in the context of the internationalization of firms from emerging economies, such as Latin America. The authors apply necessary condition analysis (NCA) on a sample of Latin American firms at different internationalization stages to test what strategic capabilities represent necessary conditions for becoming a Multilatina.
Findings
The findings suggest that only a few strategic capabilities are necessary for Latin American firms to become “Multilatinas”. While entrepreneurial orientation and marketing and sales capabilities represent necessary conditions, EM firms may internationalize even though other capabilities are developed to a lesser extent. The authors reflect on how shifts in local markets and technology drive the emergence of different types of Multilatinas.
Research limitations/implications
Measuring strategic capabilities across multiple EM firms implies a risk that firm-specific aspects are not fully captured. While the authors focused on the comparative competitive strength of capabilities and took great care to minimize measurement error, the authors acknowledge possible bias. Also, while NCA does not require a minimum sample size, findings from our sample of firms from four countries may not generalize to the region or other EMs.
Originality/value
As a relatively new statistical technique, the use of NCA has spread rapidly. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the linkage between organizational capabilities and firm internationalization has not been tested from a necessary conditions perspective yet. The reflections on the “Multilatina” concept based on the notion of EM firms as configurations of strategic capabilities inform current debates on EM multinational enterprises
COVID 19 Effect on Venezuelan Migrants’ Income: The Peruvian Case Research Study
This paper shed light on analyzing the effect of the Pandemic on Venezuelan Migrants’ Income in Peru. The Covid 19 Pandemic (Coronavirus Pandemic) enforced governments to apply the “Hammer Blow” which produced recession and consequently unemployment. Governments offset the latter effect by applying some subsidies to the Poor. The subsidy was not delivered to Venezuelan Immigrants in Peru. Therefore, our study attempts to explore the effect of the Coronavirus Pandemic on the Income of Venezuelan Immigrants. The study controls for gender and discrimination. Since 2017, the economic and political situation in Venezuela triggered migration beyond their frontiers. Peru is the second country with the high migration of Venezuelans, the first is Colombia which is the neighborhood. The migration reduced the labor force in the country that receives the population but in some cases, the delinquency rates increased after the wave of Venezuelans relocated to a particular country.
We consider the survey: “Encuesta Nacional de la Población Venezolana en Peru” (ENPOVE) to perform the study which was conducted during the peak of migration
