Creating shared value strategies to reach the United Nations sustainable development goals: Evidence from the mining industry

    No full text
The concept of shared value creation implies that firms can concomitantly create both monetary and social values by focusing on the needs and challenges of society. The definition of “shared value” has been extended within multiple doctrines. Its present expression is obscure, covers numerous other (related) ideas, and lacks factual establishment. The primary purpose of this research is to clarify the meaning of shared value in the mining industry by using terms from the stakeholders’ and strategy literature. To this end, a sample list of 27 mining firms was acquired from the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM). In addition, a complete examination based on secondary sources, such as corporate social responsibility reports was made. The evidence shows that the framework proposed requires the following terms to clarify the meaning of shared value: creating shared value strategies, types of processes in the industry, initiatives, stakeholders, and sustainable development goals

    Introduction

"We talk about globalization today as if it's some great big new thing, that we’ve all just discovered. But there’s really nothing new about it.” So declared Jacqueline Winspear (2016), author of the best-selling series of Maisie Dobbs mystery novels. And intuitively, it rings true because globalization—the relentless force of political, social, and economical integration— has seemingly been in play since the dawn of human existence. This anthology is premised on a similar declaration—that when it comes to the internationalization of higher education, there is likewise really nothing new about it. Indeed, as summarized by Dirlik (2012), “Students have been attending ‘foreign’ universities, and universities have been recruiting ‘foreign’ students, since the origins of the university” (p. 49). In other words, the internationalization of higher education is as old as the university itself

INSTITUTIONAL INVESTORS AND CORPORATE RISK AT THE ORIGIN OF THE INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL CRISIS

    No full text
The 2007 financial crisis served as a stark reminder of the vulnerability in the relationship between institutions and companies, as it revealed that many companies collapsed despite government interventions. Two crucial factors that influenced the crisis’s impact on firms were the level of creditor rights protection and corporate risk management. In this study, our aim was to investigate the impact of investment funds and banks on corporate risk prior to the 2007 financial crisis. We conducted an analysis across 21 countries to examine how institutional factors determined the influence of mutual funds and banks on corporate risk, ultimately leading to critical levels of collapse and the global spread of the financial crisis to the real economy. Additionally, we explored the role of mutual funds and banks as reference shareholders. The findings of our study reveal that the process of financial deregulation preceding the 2007 financial crisis contributed to an increase in corporate risk. In other words, financial deregulation facilitated greater involvement of institutional investors in companies, thereby encouraging the adoption of excessively risky and speculative strategies that were not necessarily aligned with the long-term sustainability of firms. © 2023 The Authors

EcoTrend: new line of the ecological toilet in the Peruvian market

    No full text
Abstract Learning outcomes The learning outcomes of the study are to analyze the launch of a new business line for Trend at the commercial and market levels; identify the potential of the green consumer in Peruvian emerging market; and apply strategic tools to analyze the viability of launching a new business line in a new market. Case overview/synopsis José Luis Galindo planned to launch a new line of toilets in the Peruvian market called EcoTrend, based on the analysis of the responsible consumption trend and the presence of a new green consumer. Therefore, he carried out a series of studies and estimates to define the feasibility of the value proposition of his ecological toilet. However, Galindo doubted if these studies and estimates were enough to carry out the launch and commercial success of the EcoTrend line. Galindo, founder and current general manager of a company called Cerámica Industrial Trend S.A.C, is broadly knowledgeable about the construction sector in Peru and has more than 30 years of work experience in the ceramic bathroom fixtures industry. Throughout his professional career, Galindo has managed three of the leading bathroom fixture companies in Peru. However, it was when he started Trend, a company focusing specifically on the manufacture of toilets, that his dream of becoming an entrepreneur came true. Trend is focused on its one-piece toilet line. These toilets are characterized by their high-quality workmanship, which is achieved through the efficient and distinctive production process of Trend’s workforce. The workforce stays on its toes due to constant, thorough training, a key to Trend’s market competitiveness. In addition, the new EcoTrend line sowed in Galindo uncertainty in the commercial viability because the product was new in the market and was going to bring a great challenge. Complexity academic level Depending on the scope of the course, different teaching objectives could be oriented toward entrepreneurship, management sciences, strategy and green marketing. The case can be used to teach higher level undergraduate marketing and management courses

Financial support failure and health results: The Peruvian case

The paper shed the light in analyzing the efficiency of Peruvian Government Financial Support in comparison with some countries in the Latin American Region and worldwide. The Covid 19 Pandemic enforced governments to apply the “Hammer Blow” which affected negatively the economy producing recession and unemployment. Governments offset the latter effect by applying subsidy policies to the Poor and then reduce the negative economic consequences of the general lockdown without getting COVID. Our study performs a Difference and Difference Model (DID) to evaluate the effectiveness of the latter policy

Determinants of Short- and Long-Term Commercial Lending Rates in Peru, 2010–2022

Short- and long-term interest rates are crucial for investment and, thus, business dynamism. The injection of money depends on the ability to promote cash flows through credit which boosts productive sectors. In the last decade, among Latin American countries, Peru has stood out for its key financial system and macroeconomic stability characteristics. The Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP) plays a key role in setting the reference rate given its autonomy and strong institutional trust. However, the mixed pension system injects liquidity into the financial system through its private contributions. For the purposes of this study, an autoregressive econometric model of distributed lags (ARDL) was employed. The findings reveal that the reference rate set by the BCRP establishes a long-term relationship for both short and long-term rates, empirically demonstrating the effectiveness of monetary policy. Additionally, the liquidity provided by the pension system triggers an immediate shock response in determining the short-term rate. It is also observed that the issuance of sovereign bonds is a robust tool in determining the long-term rate due to its facilitation of credit access. This research is relevant for identifying macroeconomic and financial variables and guiding the formulation of macroeconomic policies

Evaluation of the biological activity and chemical profile of supercritical and subcritical extracts of Bursera graveolens from northern Peru

    No full text
Bursera graveolens is a tree species located in regions between Mexico and Peru. It has been used in folk medicine, but no studies have reported on obtaining extracts of B. graveolens at high pressure. Therefore, this study compared low and high pressure extraction methods, using supercritical extraction with CO2 and subcritical extraction using CO2-EtOH, to evaluate the biological properties and chemical profile of extracts. Global yield, cytotoxic activity, antimicrobial activity and chemical profile using GC/MS were evaluated. The best global yields were obtained under subcritical conditions with %EtOH greater than 20%. Extracts from supercritical conditions showed cytotoxicity to L929 cells from 50 µg mL−1 and antimicrobial effect against dermatophyte fungi from 500 µg mL−1. Chemical profile analysis showed recovery of 17.50% of d-limonene, 28.30% of mint furanone, and 12.36% of α-terpineol in subcritical extracts. Since these compounds are an alternative to synthetic insecticides, they would have industrial value
