The threshold as topos in Michel van der Aa\u27s stage works
No full textIt is typical of Michel van der Aa’s stage works that the characters are often on a threshold. In After Life (2005–06/2009), for example, they find themselves in a limbus or a way station between heaven and earth immediately after their own death, the Sunken Garden in the 3D film opera of the same name (2011–12) is a place where one is neither dead nor alive, and the protagonist in Upload (2019–20) also appears in an in-between state, transitioning from a physical body to a virtual mind upload. Focusing on aspects of space, location and architecture, this paper examines the compositional strategies of sound, image and scenography towards thresholds in their various appearances in the film essay Passage (2002), the music theatre piece The Book of Disquiet (2008), and the film opera Upload. Drawing on concepts such as Marc Augé’s Non-Spaces, Michel Foucault’s Other Spaces as well as Walter Benjamin’s The Arcades Project, the paper focuses on the purposeful use of arcade-like architecture as well as various media technologies, arguing that the threshold preferably emerges from the mix or clash of different media ontologies, namely that of the live and the mediatised

After several workshops for KUG students by the professional kunqu performers Kathy Hall and Chen Rui, this public event will offer an introduction to the art of kunqu, in which students will present what they learnt and Kathy Hall and Chen Rui will perform some of the most famous kunqu scenes. No full textOlga Neuwirth gehört seit rund drei Jahrzehnten zu den innovativsten und international renommiertesten Künstler:innen der Neuen Musik-Szene. Aus ihren mehrdimensionalen Klang- und Bildräumen treten hybride Klänge und unauflösbare Paradoxa hervor. In ihren Kompositionen entfaltet sie eine die Sinne verunsichernde und herausfordernde Ästhetik der Schwebe und des Dazwischen.
Erstmals widmet sich nun eine umfassende Einzelstudie dem Schaffen der österreichischen Komponistin. Ausgehend vom Musiktheater „Lost Highway“, das auf dem gleichnamigen Film von David Lynch und einem Libretto von Elfriede Jelinek basiert, werden Neuwirths konzeptionelle und kompositorische Verfahrensweisen analysiert. Vor dem Hintergrund einer quellenkritischen Auseinandersetzung mit Archivmaterial aus dem Entstehungsprozess und im Hinblick auf kultur-, medien- und filmwissenschaftliche Theorien wird eine Dramaturgie des „Suspense“ beschrieben
