Towards an international lexicon
No full textInternational audienceAbstract A significant distinguishing characteristic of the International Classroom Lexicon Project was the documentation of classroom pedagogical practices of mathematics teachers in the original languages of ten communities. These lexicons provide us with an opportunity to compare identified teacher practices within these communities. In this paper, we explore the challenges of conducting a cross-lexicon comparison to explore the possibility of moving towards an international lexicon by focusing on the Australian, Chilean, Czech and French lexicons. We focus on two clusters of terms, namely, those related to assessment and those related to mathematics. Inspired by theories and studies related to networking and boundary crossing, strategies were conceived and tested in order to accomplish the following objectives: to support a meticulous and comprehensive comparison of the lexical items; to classify the complexity of similarity of lexical items; and to reveal connections amongst the four lexicons in a bid towards developing an international lexicon. This analysis has the potential to contribute significantly to the study and promotion of mathematics teachers’ reflective practice and highlights the cultural underpinning of the way classroom practices are perceived

Ils questionneront le(s) sens et la pertinence d’un terme, qui à l’heure de la mondialisation, illustre aussi l'essor d'un mode de vie de plus en plus transnational. Optimal Smoothing and Gaussian Processes with noisy data under constraints
No full textIn this paper, we extend the correspondence between Bayesian estimation and optimal smoothing in a Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space (RKHS) adding a convex constraint on the solution. Through a sequence of approximating Hilbertian spaces and a discretized model, we prove that the Maximum A Posteriori (MAP) of the posterior distribution is exactly the optimal constrained smoothing function in the RKHS. This paper can be read as a generalization of the paper [11] of Kimeldorf-Wahba where it is proved that the optimal smoothing solution is the mean of the posterior distribution. This is also a generalization of the paper [4] where the case of constrained optimal interpolation is treated. Here we relax the interpolation by introducing noise effect in the data. A numerical example is given to illustrate the theoretical result of this paper
Push-pull dyes based on Michler's aldehyde: Design and characterization of the optical and electrochemical properties
No full textInternational audienceFifteen dyes based on Michler's aldehyde used as the electron donating group and differing by the electron accepting groups have been designed and synthesized. Interestingly, all dyes showed a broad absorption extending over the visible range. Examination of the solvatochromism in twenty-three solvents of different polarities revealed these dyes to give remarkable linear correlations using the Kamlet-Taft solvent polarity scale or the SPP Catalan empirical scales. The different dyes were also characterized by photoluminescence spectroscopy as well as cyclic voltammetry. To get a deeper insight into the optical properties of the different dyes, theoretical calculations were also carried out

“Haunted Voice / Haunting Voices: It’s All a Matter of Archives and Heritage—Jack Kerouac and His Legend”
No full textInternational audienceIn his preface to La Vie est d’Hommage (2016), Cloutier writes that the openings of the Kerouac papers at the New York Public Library in 2006 helped uncover a series of unpublished works in French and shattered the myth of spontaneous writing his prose is associated to. What’s more of interest in Cloutier’s editing stance is his desire to make sense of an underlying paradox in Kerouac’s relationship to his mother tongue: i.e., digging into it, sucking its very marrow to reveal himself while burying his texts written in French in stored folders. What lied at the inception of Cloutier’s research and drive is a paradox which lays bare the very question of the archive and of archiving. My paper will precisely address the question of the archive and of archiving in Jack Kerouac’s writing process and in the construction of his legend/Duluoz Legend. Central to that question is first and foremost the issue of French language and writing, a haunted voice that Kerouac, as Cloutier aptly points out, decides to store in archives. Yet, the issue of archiving the language is far more complex than that in The Duluoz Legend and its proustian drive, it proceeds by a threefold perspective: burying or storing in personal archives, digging into ancestral archives, and eventually becoming ones’ own archivist. This paper will try to show how archiving, while partaking in Kerouac’s lifelong quest for a lineage and identity at the crossroads of cultures and languages, both Franco and American, is also what is structuring and characterizing the Legend on a formal, topical and linguistic level. Draw from a more developed project on archiving in Jack Kerouac, this paper will tackle how this dialectics of haunting and haunted voice allows contemporary 21th c. readership and critics to question Kerouac’s complex archiving gesture
