One-dimensional polymers in random environments: stretching vs. folding
International audienceIn this article we study a \emph{non-directed polymer model} on , that is a one-dimensional simple random walk placed in a random environment. More precisely, the law of the random walk is modified by the exponential of the sum of ``rewards'' (or penalities) sitting on the range of the random walk, where are i.i.d.\ random variables (the disorder), and where (disorder strength) and (external field) are two parameters. When , this corresponds to a random walk penalized by its range; when , this corresponds to the ``standard'' polymer model in random environment, except that it is non-directed. In this work, we allow the parameters to vary according to the length of the random walk, and we study in detail the competition between the \emph{stretching effect} of the disorder, the \emph{folding effect} of the external field (if ), and the \emph{entropy cost} of atypical trajectories. We prove a complete description of the (rich) phase diagram. For instance, in the case of the non-directed polymer, if \go_x ha a finite second moment, we find a transversal fluctuation exponent , and we identify the limiting distribution of the rescaled log-partition function
Toward the Use of Pupillary Responses for Pilot Selection
International audienceTask-induced mental workload of pilot students was assessed at the beginning of their training on a laboratory task. Their two year flight training outcome was associated with characteristic pupil size variations, discriminating the most and less proficient students. Results could be interpreted in line with the neural efficiency hypothesis

Laboratory modelling of equatorial ‘tongue’ accretion channels in young stellar objects caused by the Rayleigh-Taylor instability
This work was granted access to the HPC resources of MesoPSL financed by the Region Ile de France and the project EquipMeso (reference ANR-10-EQPX29-01) of the programme Investissements d’Avenir supervised by the Agence Nationale pour la Recherche.International audienceContext. The equatorial accretion scenario, caused by the development of the Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability at the disk edge, was suggested by accurate three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modelling, but no observational or experimental confirmation of such phenomena has been evidenced yet.Aims. We studied the propagation of a laterally extended laser-generated plasma stream across a magnetic field and investigated if this kind of structure can be scaled to the case of equatorial ‘tongue’ accretion channels in young stellar objects (YSOs); if so, this would support the possibility of equatorial accretion in young accreting stars.Methods. We conducted a scaled laboratory experiment at the PEARL laser facility. The experiment consists in an optical laser pulse that is focused onto the surface of a Teflon target. The irradiation of the target leads to the expansion of a hot plasma stream into the vacuum, perpendicularly to an externally applied magnetic field. We used a Mach-Zehnder interferometer to diagnose the plasma stream propagation along two axes, to obtain the three-dimensional distribution of the plasma stream.Results. The laboratory experiment shows the propagation of a laterally extended laser-generated plasma stream across a magnetic field. We demonstrate that: (i) such a stream is subject to the development of the RT instability, and (ii) the stream, decomposed into tongues, is able to efficiently propagate perpendicular to the magnetic field. Based on numerical simulations, we show that the origin of the development of the instability in the laboratory is similar to that observed in MHD models of equatorial tongue accretion in YSOs.Conclusions. As we verify that the laboratory plasma scales favourably to accretion inflows of YSOs, our laboratory results support the argument in favour of the possibility of the RT-instability-caused equatorial tongue accretion scenario in the astrophysical case
Version française du chapitre à paraître dans : Liguori, A., Rappoport, P., Gachago D., Story Work for a Just Future - Co-creating Diverse Knowledges and Methods within an International Community of Practice. Smithsonian Scholarly Press (July 2022)International audienceThis chapter aims to review four years of experimentation with digital storytelling, understood as a means of citizen expression, as part of a workshop-laboratory organized by the IDEFI-CréaTIC program and the ArTec University Research School in partnership with the University of Athens. Between 2016 and 2020, thirty students took part in this workshop-laboratory, led by Arnaud Laborderie and Evika Kamagioli under the direction of Michel Meimaris. Our approach is to experiment with new methods of civic expression, to think about the exercise of politics and civic duty in a digital world through the original practice of digital storytelling.
On the stability of the Ginzburg-Landau vortex
International audienceWe introduce a functional framework taylored to investigate the minimality and stability properties of the Ginzburg-Landau vortex of degree one on the whole plane. We prove that a renormalized Ginzburg-Landau energy is well-defined in that framework and that the vortex is its unique global minimizer up to the invariances by translation and phase shift. Our main result is a nonlinear coercivity estimate for the renormalized energy around the vortex, from which we can deduce its orbital stability as a solution to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, the natural Hamiltonian evolution equation associated to the Ginzburg-Landau energy
Anisotropy and stratification effects in the dynamics of fast rotating compressible fluids
International audienceThe primary goal of this paper is to develop robust methods to handle two ubiquitous features appearing in the modeling of geophysical flows: (i) the anisotropy of the viscous stress tensor, (ii) stratification effects. We focus on the barotropic Navier-Stokes equations with Coriolis and gravitational forces. Two results are the main contributions of the paper. Firstly, we establish a local well-posedness result for finite-energy solutions, via a maximal regularity approach. This method allows us to circumvent the use of the effective viscous flux, which plays a key role in the weak solutions theories of Lions-Feireisl and Hoff, but seems to be restricted to isotropic viscous stress tensors. Moreover, our approach is sturdy enough to take into account non constant reference density states; this is crucial when dealing with stratification effects. Secondly, we study the structure of the solutions to the previous model in the regime when the Rossby, Mach and Froude numbers are of the same order of magnitude. We prove an error estimate on the relative entropy between actual solutions and their approximation by a large-scale quasi-geostrophic flow supplemented with Ekman boundary layers. Our analysis holds for a large class of barotropic pressure laws
