    No full text

Heat management and losses of electrocaloric cooling devices based on electrostatic thermal switches

    No full text
International audienceElectrocaloric cooling is a promising technology that could replace existing vapor-compression technology with lighter and more efficient solid state based devices. Among those, electrocaloric coolers using electrostatic actuation are rising; therefore harnessing their advantages and understanding their shortcomings is still a work in progress. In this paper, we pin down two limitations that stem from a commonly used device design, and we propose a model that takes them into account. The first is due to the displacement of the film, which moves the air around and causes losses. We estimate the air losses through a Poiseuille flow model. The second is related to the non-ideal Brayton cycle the device performs and which results in generating a heat flow opposite to cooling. We estimated the effect of this back-flow on the cold flux using a 2D thermal diffusion model. Ultimately, our results point at several possible improvements for further designs. Among them, a slight reduction of the air pressure in the device looks as a promising solution to reduce air losses

Crustal architecture and evolution of the southwestern South China Sea: Implications to continental breakup

    No full text
International audienceThe South China Sea (SCS) is a marginal basin characterized by propagating breakup and subsequent seafloor spreading during the Cenozoic. Our study investigates the crustal architecture and tectonic evolution of the Xisha Islands-Northwest Borneo conjugate margins using a 1000 km long seismic profile and two shorter seismic lines. This system is characterized by wide margins showing a succession of rift basins with thinned continental crust, associated with large extensional detachment faults soling on top of the lower crust. In relation with crustal extension, several syn-rift sequences have been identified. The lower syn-rift unit (syn-rift I) shows well expressed wedge-shape growth strata. The upper one (syn-rift II) presents a more uniform thickness, and is slightly offset by normal faults dipping toward the depocenters. To illustrate the evolution of the southwestern SCS margins during continental breakup, we restore two conjugate sections near the oceanic magnetic anomaly C5En (18.8 Ma). The conjugate COT presents an asymmetrical hyper-extension architecture in cross sections, with the southern margin being the lower plate margin. In map view, the spatial variation of crustal structures illustrates a bayonet shape characterized by an initial N-S extension coeval with the first phase of seafloor spreading in the east sub-basin in the SCS. The extension direction changed shortly later (circa 23Ma) to NW-SE opening in the southwest sub-basin in relation to a ridge jump. We suggest that variable extension direction is linked to changes in the compressional tectonic regime along Borneo and Palawan

Generalized hyper-Ramsey-Bordé matter-wave interferometry: Quantum engineering of robust atomic sensors with composite pulses

    No full text
International audienceA new class of atomic interferences using ultranarrow optical transitions are pushing quantum engineering control to a very high level of precision for the next generation of sensors and quantum gate operations. In such context, we propose a new quantum engineering approach to Ramsey-Bordé interferometry introducing multiple composite laser pulses with tailored pulse duration, Rabi field amplitude, frequency detuning and laser phase step. We explore quantum metrology with hyper-Ramsey and hyper-Hahn-Ramsey clocks below the 10−18 level of fractional accuracy by fine-tuning control of light excitation parameters leading to spinor interferences protected against light-shift coupled to laser-probe field variation. We review cooperative composite pulse protocols to generate robust Ramsey-Bordé, Mach-Zehnder, and double-loop atomic sensors shielded against measurement distortion related to Doppler and light shifts coupled to pulse area errors. Fault-tolerant autobalanced hyperinterferometers are introduced eliminating several technical laser pulse defects that can occur during the entire probing interrogation protocol. Quantum sensors with composite pulses and ultracold atomic sources should offer a new level of high accuracy in the detection of acceleration and rotation inducing phase shifts, a strong improvement in tests of fundamental physics with hyperclocks while paving the way to a new conception of atomic interferometers tracking space-time gravitational waves with very high sensitivity

    No full text
The technological evolution of IGBT components requires a strong increase in power density. This increase in power density leads to very high temperature fields and gradients in the components and makes it necessary to know the thermal constraints. The temperature is thus one of the dimensioning elements of the converters and is at the centre of the concerns of the designers. To characterize these components, we used thermoreflectance during this thesis. The work presented in this thesis consists of three main parts. First, we highlight the problem of registration in the thermoreflectance domain. We study two subpixel shift methods in order to choose the most adequate method to obtain an accurate reflectivity measurement. The results show that subpixel cross-correlation registration with a precise step size gives better results and that this step size is directly correlated with the noise level of the images. In the second part, we present a measurement methodology on an IGBT chip packaged in a power module. This methodology aims to determine several experimental parameters (optimal wavelength, minimum excitation frequency and influence of image accumulation on noise) and to choose the most suitable calibration method for this type of device. Then, we perform a detailed thermal study on the metallization of IGBT emitter. Finally, we perform thermal measurements through the silicone gel and study the influence of aging on the thermal mapping. The results obtained perfectly reflect the reality of the thermal behaviour of IGBTs in power modules. The thermal measurements performed in this thesis have shown the ability of thermoreflectance to have a high spatial resolution of the temperature and thus to trace the individual behaviour of the IGBT cells.L’évolution technologique de composants d’IGBT passe par une forte augmentation des densités de puissance.
