No full textInternational audienceStarted in 1938, the process of abolishing the penal colony of French Guiana was completed in August 1953 with the organization of the last convoy of convicts under sentence and released convicts to the metropolis. However, some former convicts made the choice on that date to stay put and not to return. This article examines the trajectories of these men and the living conditions they encountered in Guyanese civil society from the 1950s to the early 1980s. It also examines the traces they left in the contemporary local memory.Débuté à partir de 1938, le processus d’abolition du bagne de Guyane s’est achevé au mois d’août 1953 avec l’organisation du dernier convoi de forçats en cours de peine et de libérés en direction de la métropole. Néanmoins, certains anciens forçats ont fait le choix à cette date de rester sur place et de ne pas rentrer. Cet article s’intéresse aux trajectoires de ces hommes et aux conditions de vie qu’ils ont rencontrées dans la société civile guyanaise des années 1950 aux début des années 1980. Il s’intéresse également aux traces qu’ils ont laissées dans la mémoire locale contemporaine
Energy analysis and life cycle assessment of a thermal energy storage unit involving conventional or recycled storage materials and devoted to industrial waste heat valorisation
No full textInternational audienceAny system intending to improve the environmental performances of a process should be assessed by a Life Cycle Assessment. This work draws up the environmental profile of the heat provided by a storage system recovering industrial waste heat at high temperature (500 °C) through 5 selected indicators: Cumulative Energy Demand, Global Warming Potential, abiotic depletion potential, particle matter and freshwater eutrophication. The calculated indicators were compared to those of the fossil fuel substituted by the recovered heat, that is to say natural gas, and proved to be reduced. Then, the environmental payback times were calculated; and an energetic profitability evaluation by the Energy Returned on Investment expanded on the profile. Besides, the influence of operating conditions variations was investigated through a parametric study. An optimal number of cycles to provide the same amount of energy may be defined, as a compromise between the abiotic resource depletion potential reduction with smaller tanks performing more cycles and the energy returned on investment deteriorated with the operational energy consumption increased due to higher pressure drop with smaller tank diameter. The most rewarding environmental performances concerned the Cumulative Energy Demand, Global Warming Potential indicators of the provided heat, about 1.2 kgCO2-eq and 65 MJ-eq per kWh (payback time lower than 3 months), and the Energy Returned on Investment that doubled compared to natural gas, e.g. reached a value of 55. The positive effect of using recycled storage materials on the resource depletion indicator were enlightened, notably when the operating conditions strayed from the reference case

The Vernacular: Three Essays on an Ambivalent Concept and its Uses in South Asia
No full textIn South Asia, and particularly in India, the "vernacular" is a key notion in descriptions of the linguistic set-up of the subcontinent. Much criticised and yet frequently used, in today's parlance "vernacular" usually denotes a collective of South Asian languages as opposed to English. Some ambivalence inheres in the term due to its etymology and legacy; but despite certain negative associations, the term has recently undergone a positive re-evalution in various academic fields related to South Asia and beyond.
Various scholars have engaged with the notion of the "vernacular", but so far, no concerted effort has been made to investigate the "vernacular" and its South Asia-related uses critically across various temporal and regional contexts. The essays at hand venture out as a first step in this direction by outlining the etymology, uses and problematics of the concept, its history and politics in colonial and postcolonial South Asia, as well as its role in formulating a particular sort of aesthetics

No full textInternational audienceCette recherche issue d’une thèse en cours traite des questions de l’orientation des jeunes collégiens et lycéens, sur des territoires dits éducation prioritaire, visés par de nombreuses politiques publiques mettant en réseaux de nombreux acteurs-partenaires (Glasman, 1992 ; Morel & Pesle, 2020). Du fait des spécificités territoriales observées, des dispositifs (Barrère, 2013) et partenariats (Morel & Pesle, 2020) mis en place, nous interrogeons les jeunes pour comprendre leurs choix d’orientation, tout en observant les pratiques, positionnements et représentations des acteurs accompagnateurs. Notre étude repose sur une méthode qualitative via des observations et des entretiens semi-directifs. Nous mobilisons la didactique professionnelle afin de pouvoir analyser les pratiques des acteurs impliqués et les accompagnements proposés (Vinatier, 2009). Cette approche nous permet d’analyser l’activité d’accompagnement à l’orientation et d’identifier les schèmes mobilisés. Nous tâcherons de décrire les classes de situation de ces activités, au sein desquelles nous envisageons les compétences et les conceptualisations en actes des acteurs (Vergnaud, 2008)

Geochronological evidence of Cambrian Series 2 calc-alkaline plutonism in the Paleozoic Western High Atlas (Moroccan Meseta)
No full textInternational audienceThis study presents geochronological and geochemical data of intermediate-felsic plutonic rocks from the Paleozoic Western High Atlas (Moroccan Meseta). Samples were taken from Medinet diorite emplaced in Cambrian Taroudant Group volcanic and sedimentary rocks and Tiniskt microgranite intrusive in Ediacaran Ouarzazate Group volcano-sedimentary rocks and Tighardine granodiorite. Based on U–Pb analysis of zircon,two well-constrained ages of 514 ± 3 Ma and 521 ± 5 Ma (Cambrian Series 2), were determined for Medinet diorite and Tiniskt microgranite, respectively. It is suggested that both Cambrian Series 2 plutons may represent the deep-seated magma chambers of Terreneuvian-Cambrian Series 2 eruptions recognized in the Paleozoic Western High Atlas. These granitic and dioritic rocks are peraluminous and show compositional affinity with subalkaline calc-alkaline series comparable with the oldest Terreneuvian V2 volcanic rocks. These findings provide evidence of a protracted period of production of calc-alkaline granitic and dioritic magmas during the transition from an Ediacaran convergent setting to Cambrian intra-continental rifting in the northern Gondwana margin
Higher Order Impedance Boundary Condition with Integral Method for the Scattering Problem in Electromagnetism
No full textIn this paper, we implement the high order boundary condition (HOIBC) in the integral equations to solve the scattering problem. We study the HOIBC operators that appear in the boundary integral equations and we propose a discretization of these operators in spaces H(div) and H(curl). Then, we give validations of the HOIBC by calculating the radar cross section (RCS), that show the improvement in accuracy over the standard impedance boundary condition (SIBC). The computation code implements the H-matrix approach with Adaptive Cross Approximation (ACA) and MPI parallelization
