No full textInternational audienceSulfs represent a class of unconventional sulfatases which provide an original post-synthetic regulatory mechanism for heparan sulfate polysaccharides and are involved in multiple physiopathological processes, including cancer. However, Sulfs remain poorly characterized enzymes, with major discrepancies regarding their in vivo functions. Here we show that human SuIf-2 (HSulf-2) harbors a chondroitin/dermatan sulfate glycosaminoglycan (GAG) chain, attached to the enzyme substrate-binding domain. We demonstrate that this GAG chain affects enzyme/substrate recognition and tunes HSulf-2 activity in vitro and in vivo. In addition, we show that mammalian hyaluronidase acts as a promoter of HSulf-2 activity by digesting its GAG chain. In conclusion, our results highlight HSulf-2 as a proteoglycan-related enzyme and its GAG chain as a critical non-catalytic modulator of the enzyme activity. These findings contribute to clarifying the conflicting data on the activities of the Sulfs
Vertically heterogeneous 2D semi-interpenetrating networks based on cellulose acetate and cross-linked polybutadiene
No full textInternational audienceThis work reports the feasibility of polybutadiene (PB) cross-linking under UV irradiation in the presence of a linear polymer, cellulose acetate (CA), to form semi-interpenetrating polymer networks at the air–water interface. The thermodynamic properties and the morphology of two-dimensional (2D) CA/PB blends are investigated after UV irradiation and for a wide range of CA volume fractions. A contraction of the mixed Langmuir films is observed independent of the composition, in agreement with that recorded for the individual PB monolayer after cross-linking. The PB network formation is demonstrated by in situ sum-frequency generation spectroscopy on the equivolumic CA/PB mixed film. From Brewster angle microscopy observations, the PB network synthesis does not induce any morphology change at the mesoscopic scale, and all of the mixed films remain homogeneous laterally. In situ neutron reflectometry is used to probe the effect of PB cross-linking on the vertical structure of CA/PB mixed films. For all studied compositions, significant thickening of the films is evidenced, consistent with their contraction ratio. This thickening is accompanied by a partial expulsion of the PB toward the film–air interface, which is attributed to the hydrophobic character of the PB. This phenomenon is stronger for films rich in PB. In particular, the structure of the PB-rich film undergoes a transition from vertically homogeneous to inhomogeneous along the depth. 2D semi-interpenetrating polymer networks can thus be synthesized at the air–water interface with a morphology that is strongly influenced by the polymer–polymer and polymer–environment interactions

Bentham et les femmes : intérêts et consentement
No full textQue fait la différence de genre à l’universalisme benthamien ? Les intérêts des femmes, en tant que groupe défini par des caractéristiques genrées, sont-ils pris en charge ? De quelle façon ? En suivant la logique des intérêts des femmes, cet article recentre le débat sur un thème propre à l’utilitarisme pour expliquer à nouveaux frais la position du philosophe sur les droits des femmes dans les différents statuts qu’elles occupent. En prenant au sérieux leurs intérêts et leur consentement, Bentham évite l’essentialisation des caractères sexuels. En outre, il n’établit pas de continuité directe entre le statut civil des femmes et leur participation politique. Comme on le verra, il ne propose pas cependant une théorie morale, juridique et politique qui prenne en compte le critère du genre de façon homogène et rigoureuse, et, malgré l’étendue de son entreprise de déconstruction, n’échappe pas à tous les préjugés de son temps
