Politik. Die Empörung war groß. In diesem aufgeheizten

Time evolution of temperature profiles retrieved from 13 years of infrared atmospheric sounding interferometer (IASI) data using an artificial neural network
International audienceThe three IASI instruments, launched in 2006, 2012, and 2018, are key instruments to weather forecasting, and most meteorological centers assimilate IASI nadir radiance data into atmospheric models to feed their forecasts. The EUropean organisation for the exploitation of METeorological SATellites (EUMETSAT) recently released a reprocessed homogeneous radiance record for the whole IASI observation period, from which thirteen years (2008-2020) of temperature profiles can be obtained. In this work, atmospheric temperatures at different altitudes are retrieved from IASI radiances measured in the carbon dioxide absorption bands (654-800 cm-1 and 2250-2400 cm-1) by selecting the channels that are the most sensitive to the temperature at different altitudes. We rely on an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to retrieve atmospheric temperatures from a selected set of IASI radiances. We trained the ANN with IASI radiances as input and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis version 5 (ERA5) as output. The retrieved temperatureswere validated with ERA5, with in situ radiosonde temperatures from the Analysed RadioSoundings Archive (ARSA)network and with EUMETSAT temperatures retrieved fromIASI radiances using a different method. Between 750 and7 hPa, where IASI is most sensitive to temperature, a goodagreement is observed between the three datasets: the differences between IASI on one hand and ERA5, ARSA, orEUMETSAT on the other hand are usually less than 0.5 Kat these altitudes. At 2 hPa, as the IASI sensitivity decreases,we found differences up to 2 K between IASI and the threevalidation datasets. We then computed atmospheric temperature linear trends from atmospheric temperatures between750 and 2 hPa. We found that in the past 13 years, there is ageneral warming trend of the troposphere that is more important at the poles and at mid-latitudes (0.5 K/decade at mid-latitudes, 1 K/decade at the North Pole). The stratosphereis globally cooling on average, except at the South Pole asa result of the ozone layer recovery and a sudden stratospheric warming in 2019. The cooling is most pronounced inthe equatorial upper stratosphere (−1 K/decade). This workshows that ANN can be a powerful and simple tool to retrieveIASI temperatures at different altitudes in the upper troposphere and in the stratosphere, allowing us to construct a homogeneous and consistent temperature data record adaptedto trend analysis

Survey of spatio-temporal couplings throughout high-power ultrashort lasers
International audienceThe investigation of spatio-temporal couplings (STCs) of broadband light beams is becoming a key topic for the optimization as well as applications of ultrashort laser systems. This calls for accurate measurements of STCs. Yet, it is only recently that such complete spatio-temporal or spatio-spectral characterization has become possible, and it has so far mostly been implemented at the output of the laser systems, where experiments take place. In this survey, we present for the first time STC measurements at different stages of a collection of high-power ultrashort laser systems, all based on the chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) technique, but with very different output characteristics. This measurement campaign reveals spatio-temporal effects with various sources, and motivates the expanded use of STC characterization throughout CPA laser chains, as well as in a wider range of types of ultrafast laser systems. In this way knowledge will be gained not only about potential defects, but also about the fundamental dynamics and operating regimes of advanced ultrashort laser systems
Diagnosis of fuel cells using instantaneous frequencies and envelopes extracted from stack voltage signal
The work carried out aims to diagnose fuel cells with reduced instrumentation and computation times. The article describes a non-intrusive, application-oriented diagnostic tool, based on the sole measurement of the stack voltage and requiring no specific external excitation of the electrochemical generator. The adopted data-driven method relies on well-suited signal analysis techniques (fast calculations of relevant fault signatures based on envelopes and instantaneous frequencies) and information processing (pattern recognition). A wide range of operating regimes can be identified (variations in flow rates, pressures, temperatures; combinations of simultaneous faults), even when they correspond to small deviations from nominal conditions. The portability of the method has been studied on two PEMFC stacks, designed for different applications: transport and stationary. Correct classification rates close to 98% are obtained in both cases
International audienceThere have been more and more debates on free public transport in France since several years. After having concerned small public transport networks, they now affect larger networks, including those irrigating metropolises. In France, any election campaign is conducive to this type of passionate debates. This paper provides an analysis of the prominence of the free transport subject in the last municipal elections campaign (2020) in French metropolises. It underlines its important role as one of the different transport tariff levers. Partial free transport appears to be the most planned measure, at least initially during the first stage of the mandate, with various design of the notion of partial free of charge. Based on views expressed by the elected candidates, this paper sketches out a short-term perspective on the future of free metropolitan public transport networks and opens the debate on the extension of the free transport measure beyond urban conurbation networks.
