Correlation functions and transport coefficients in generalised hydrodynamics

    No full text
International audienceWe review the recent advances on exact results for dynamical correlation functions at large scales and related transport coefficients in interacting integrable models. We discuss Drude weights, conductivity and diffusion constants, as well as linear and nonlinear response on top of equilibrium and non-equilibrium states. We consider the problems from the complementary perspectives of the general hydrodynamic theory of many-body systems, including hydrodynamic projections, and form-factor expansions in integrable models, and show how they provide a comprehensive and consistent set of exact methods to extract large scale behaviours. Finally, we overview various applications in integrable spin chains and field theories

Proposal to observe path superpositions in a double-slit setup

    No full text
International audienceThe interference pattern produced by a quantum particle in Young's double-slit setup is attributed to the particle's wave function having gone through both slits. In the path integral formulation, this interference involves a superposition of paths, going through either slit, linking the source to the detection point. We show how these paths superpositions can in principle be observed by implementing a series of minimally perturbing weak measurements between the slits and the detection plane. We further propose a simplified protocol in order to observe these “weak trajectories” with single photons

    Mind-Body Entanglement: Theory and Therapies

    No full text
International audienceThis book suggests a radical departure in approaching the mind-body problem. Instead of trying to causally relate subjective experience to the functioning of the body, it begins with the notion of the psychosomatic unity of the individual and looks for its conditions of possibility. This text shows that what makes this unity possible is the generalized entanglement relation that connects a person's subjective experience with its body functioning in a specific way. In addition to providing a significant contribution to the long-standing philosophical debate about the nature of the mind-body connection, this change of perspective based on the concept of generalized entanglement allows for exploring a holistic approach to health. It can for example explain the existence of body memory and leads to a better understanding of the genesis and evolution of internal diseases, allowing for the development of mindbody therapies. This volume also provides new insights into mental disorders and sets the theoretical basis of self-healing methods appealing to students, researchers and professionals in the fields

CIMAR, NIMAR, and LMMA: Novel algorithms for thread and memory migrations in user space on NUMA systems using hardware counters

    No full text
International audienceThis paper introduces two novel algorithms for thread migrations, named CIMAR (Core-aware Interchange and Migration Algorithm with performance Record –IMAR–) and NIMAR (Node-aware IMAR), and a new algorithm for the migration of memory pages, LMMA (Latency-based Memory pages Migration Algorithm), in the context of Non-Uniform Memory Access (NUMA) systems. This kind of system has complex memory hierarchies that present a challenging problem in extracting the best possible performance, where thread and memory mapping play a critical role. The presented algorithms gather and process the information provided by hardware counters to make decisions about the migrations to be performed, trying to find the optimal mapping. They have been implemented as a user space tool that looks for improving the system performance, particularly in, but not restricted to, scenarios where multiple programs with different characteristics are running. This approach has the advantage of not requiring any modification on the target programs or the Linux kernel while keeping a low overhead. Two different benchmark suites have been used to validate our algorithms: The NAS parallel benchmark, mainly devoted to computational routines, and the LevelDB database benchmark focused on read-write operations. These benchmarks allow us to illustrate the influence of our proposal in these two important types of codes. Note that those codes are state-of-the-art implementations of the routines, so few improvements could be initially expected. Experiments have been designed and conducted to emulate three different scenarios: a single program running in the system with full resources, an interactive server where multiple programs run concurrently varying the availability of resources, and a queue of tasks where granted resources are limited. The proposed algorithms have been able to produce significant benefits, especially in systems with higher latency penalties for remote accesses. When more than one benchmark is executed simultaneously, performance improvements have been obtained, reducing execution times up to 60%. In this kind of situation, the behaviour of the system is more critical, and the NUMA topology plays a more relevant role. Even in the worst case, when isolated benchmarks are executed using the whole system, that is, just one task at a time, the performance is not degraded

Detailed characterization of laboratory magnetized super-critical collisionless shock and of the associated proton energization

    No full text
International audienceCollisionless shocks are ubiquitous in the Universe and are held responsible for the production of non-thermal particles and high-energy radiation. In the absence of particle collisions in the system, theoretical works show that the interaction of an expanding plasma with a pre-existing electromagnetic structure (as in our case) is able to induce energy dissipation and allow for shock formation. Shock formation can alternatively take place when two plasmas interact, throughmicroscopic instabilities inducing electromagnetic fields which are able in turn to mediate energy dissipation and shock formation. Using our platform where we couple a fast expanding plasma induced by high-power lasers (JLF/Titan at LLNL and LULI2000) with high-strength magnetic fields, we have investigated the generation of magnetized collisionless shock and the associated particle energization. We have characterized the shock to be collisionless and super-critical.We report here on measurements of the plasma density, temperature, the electromagnetic field structures, and particle energization in the experiments, under various conditions of ambient plasma and B-field. We have also modelled the formation of the shocks using macroscopic hydrodynamic simulations and the associated particle acceleration using kinetic particle-in-cell simulations. As a companion paper of \citet{yao2020laboratory}, here we show additional results of the experiments and simulations, providing more information to reproduce them and demonstrating the robustness of our interpreted proton energization mechanism to be shock surfing acceleration
