A Profile-Based AI-Assisted Dynamic Scheduling Approach for Heterogeneous Architectures

    No full text
International audienceWhile heterogeneous architectures are increasing popular with High Performance Computing systems, their effectiveness depends on how efficient the scheduler is at allocating workloads onto appropriate computing devices and how communication and computation can be overlapped. With different types of resources integrated into one system, the complexity of the scheduler correspondingly increases. Moreover, for applications with varying problem sizes on different heterogeneous resources, the optimal scheduling approach may vary accordingly. Thus, we introduce a Profile-based AI-assisted Dynamic Scheduling approach to dynamically and adaptively adjust workloads and efficiently utilize heterogeneous resources. It combines online scheduling, application profile information, hardware mathematical modeling and offline machine learning estimation modeling to implement automatic application-device-specific scheduling for heterogeneous architectures. A hardware mathematical model provides coarse-grain computing resource selection while the profile information and offline machine learning model estimates the performance of a fine-grain workload, and an online scheduling approach dynamically and adaptively distributes the workload. Our scheduling approach is tested on control-regular applications, 2D and 3D Stencil kernels (based on a Jacobi Algorithm), and a data-irregular application, Sparse Matrix-Vector Multiplication, in an event-driven runtime system. Experimental results show that PDAWL is either onpar or far outperforms whichever yields the best results (CPU or GPU)

The Excited State Dynamics of a Mutagenic Cytidine Etheno Adduct Investigated by Combining Time-Resolved Spectroscopy and Quantum Mechanical Calculations

    No full text
International audienceJoint femtosecond fluorescence upconversion experiments and theoretical calculations provide a hitherto unattained degree of characterization and understanding of the mutagenic etheno adduct 3,N4-etheno-2′-deoxycytidine (εdC) excited state relaxation. This endogenously formed lesion is attracting great interest because of its ubiquity in human tissues and its highly mutagenic properties. The εdC fluorescence is modified with respect to that of the canonical base dC, with a 3-fold increased lifetime and quantum yield at neutral pH. This behavior is amplified upon protonation of the etheno ring (εdCH+). Quantum mechanical calculations show that the lowest energy state ππ*1 is responsible for the fluorescence and that the main nonradiative decay pathway to the ground state goes through an ethene-like conical intersection, involving the out-of-plane motion of the C5 and C6 substituents. This conical intersection is lower in energy than the ππ* state (ππ*1) minimum, but a sizable energy barrier explains the increase of εdC and εdCH+ fluorescence lifetimes with respect to that of dC

International audienceThe advent of digital in education is strongly influenced by the integration of NTIC in training. The training environment in academia is dominated by the use of computers, the Internet, software in both teaching and learning. We want through this research, to respond to the question: What perceptions have the actors in the context of engineering training of the contributions and limits of use of simulation software in the context of teaching and/or learning of telecommunications? Our objective consisted in identifying the strengths and weaknesses declared by the students and the feedback they have from the use of simulation software in their learning environment. A methodological approach of the exploratory type, comprising several sources of data collection including a questionnaire intended for students (n=140), where we gave greater importance to the answers to open questions, semi-directed collective interviews with students (n = 30), was mobilized to answer our research question. The perceptions of the students are both strongly marked by a plurality of points of view starting from the variables of omens to the variables of products. The results related to the omen variables are satisfied with the motives which have pushed the actors to adopt this or that other software as a teaching or learning tool. On the other hand, the results related to the product variables are directly related to the expectations of the actors vis-à-vis the object of study. At this level, the actors give more pronouncements on the achievements developed thanks to the use of this or that other software. Thus, the contributions and limitations noted by the actors are globally influenced by the perceptions before and after use of the software in the training environment.L'avènement du numérique en éducation est fortement influencé par l'intégration des NTIC en formation.

Thermal Desorption of Interstellar Ices: A Review on the Controlling Parameters and Their Implications from Snowlines to Chemical Complexity

    No full text
International audienceThe evolution of star-forming regions and their thermal balance are strongly influenced by their chemical composition, which, in turn, is determined by the physicochemical processes that govern the transition between the gas phase and the solid state, specifically icy dust grains (e.g., particle adsorption and desorption). Gas−grain and grain−gas transitions as well as formation and sublimation of interstellar ices are thus essential elements of understanding astrophysical observations of cold environments (e.g., prestellar cores) where unexpected amounts of a large variety of chemical species have been observed in the gas phase. Adsorbed atoms and molecules also undergo chemical reactions that are not efficient in the gas phase. Therefore, the parametrization of the physical properties of atoms and molecules interacting with dust grain particles is clearly a key aspect to interpret astronomical observations and to build realistic and predictive astrochemical models. In this consensus evaluation, we focus on parameters controlling the thermal desorption of ices and how these determine pathways toward molecular complexity and define the location of snowlines, which ultimately influence the planet formation process. We review different crucial aspects of desorption parameters both from a theoretical and experimental points of view. We critically assess the desorption parameters (the binding energies, E b , and the pre-exponential factor, ν) commonly used in the astrochemical community for astrophysically relevant species and provide tables with recommended values. The aim of these tables is to provide a coherent set of critically assessed desorption parameters for common use in future work. In addition, we show that a nontrivial determination of the pre-exponential factor ν using transition state theory can affect the binding energy value. The primary focus is on pure ices, but we also discuss the desorption behavior of mixed, that is, astronomically more realistic, ices. This allows discussion of segregation effects. Finally, we conclude this work by discussing the limitations of theoretical and experimental approaches currently used to determine the desorption properties with suggestions for future improvements

Anti-Migrant Hate Speech as a Symptom of a Representation Crisis

    No full text
International audienceThis chapter delves into the ambiguities of the expression of online hate speech and seeks to understand the challenges it raises for researchers. It discusses cyberhate against migrants in its multiple dimensions, i.e. as a manifestation of the affective publics of the Internet, crystallising the social and political dimensions of a representation crisis constructed as a public problem. Cyberhate in the context of migrations towards Europe builds upon the divide “us/them”, “them” alternatively designating migrants as a group, or those who allegedly support them, i.e. politicians, media, scientists and other designated elites. Hate speech draws on representations and shared meanings, community building and otherness and profits from the ecosystem of the Internet

Euclid preparation. XV. Forecasting cosmological constraints for the Euclid and CMB joint analysis

    No full text
International audienceThe combination and cross-correlation of the upcoming Euclid data with cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements is a source of great expectation since it will provide the largest lever arm of epochs, ranging from recombination to structure formation across the entire past light cone. In this work, we present forecasts for the joint analysis of Euclid and CMB data on the cosmological parameters of the standard cosmological model and some of its extensions. This work expands and complements the recently published forecasts based on Euclid-specific probes, namely galaxy clustering, weak lensing, and their cross-correlation. With some assumptions on the specifications of current and future CMB experiments, the predicted constraints are obtained from both a standard Fisher formalism and a posterior-fitting approach based on actual CMB data. Compared to a Euclid-only analysis, the addition of CMB data leads to a substantial impact on constraints for all cosmological parameters of the standard Λ-cold-dark-matter model, with improvements reaching up to a factor of ten. For the parameters of extended models, which include a redshift-dependent dark energy equation of state, non-zero curvature, and a phenomenological modification of gravity, improvements can be of the order of two to three, reaching higher than ten in some cases. The results highlight the crucial importance for cosmological constraints of the combination and cross-correlation of Euclid probes with CMB data
