Zero-error source coding when side information may be present
International audienceZero-error source coding when side-information (SI) may be present is a fundamental building block of interactive real-world compression systems. In such a scenario, the side information may represent an image that could have been requested previously by the user. We aim at designing a two layer zero-error coding scheme that adapts to the presence or not of the side information at the decoder. The scenario we consider involves two decoders and two noiseless channels, the first channel to both decoder and the second channel of additional information to decoder 2 only. The side information is available at the encoder and decoder 1, but not at decoder 2. By using a random coding argument we characterize the zero-error achievable rate region. The code construction relies on coset partitioning obtained from a linear code. The encoder sends the coset of the source sequence on the first channel to all decoders, and sends the index of the source sequence in its coset on the second channel to decoder 2
Relativistic spin-0 particle in a box: Bound states, wave packets, and the disappearance of the Klein paradox
International audienceThe “particle-in-a-box” problem is investigated for a relativistic particle obeying the Klein–Gordon equation. To find the bound states, the standard methods known from elementary non-relativistic quantum mechanics can only be employed for “shallow” wells. For deeper wells, when the confining potentials become supercritical, we show that a method based on a scattering expansion accounts for Klein tunneling (undamped propagation outside the well) and the Klein paradox (charge density increase inside the well). We will see that in the infinite well limit, the wave function outside the well vanishes, and Klein tunneling is suppressed: Quantization is, thus, recovered, similar to the non-relativistic particle in a box. In addition, we show how wave packets can be constructed semi-analytically from the scattering expansion, accounting for the dynamics of Klein tunneling in a physically intuitive way
International audienceWe study the convergence of particle systems described by SDEs driven by Brownian motion and Poisson random measure, where the coefficients depend on the empirical measure of the system. Every particle jumps with a jump rate depending on its position and on the empirical measure of the system. Jumps are simultaneous, that is, at each jump time, all particles of the system are affected by this jump and receive a random jump height that is centred and scaled in This particular scaling implies that the limit of the empirical measures of the system is random, describing the conditional distribution of one particle in the limit system. We call such limits {\it conditional McKean-Vlasov limits}. The conditioning in the limit measure reflects the dependencies between coexisting particles in the limit system such that we are dealing with a {\it conditional propagation of chaos property}. As a consequence of the scaling in and of the fact that the limit of the empirical measures is not deterministic the limit system turns out to be solution of a non-linear SDE, where not independent martingale measures and white noises appear having an intensity that depends on the conditional law of the process.
Genocide in Bangladesh - The politics of Disinformation
For the whole eleven years during which I have been actively engaged in South Asia, nothing touched me more than the Bangladeshi people’s struggle for memory, justice, and accountability regarding the Genocide perpetrated against Bangladesh by the Pakistani military authorities. This genocide, organised in tandem with Islamic fanatic organisations from both West and East Pakistan, was meant to destroy the Bengali identity by murdering elites, destroying religious diversity, and raping women.
