Although such crisis is the outcome of much financial mismanagement, corruption, and lack of transparency in government, there are external factors involved as well. Due to its geo-strategic location, Sri Lanka much interests both China and India, who strongly compete for influence in the area. This article attempts to analyse the Sri Lankan crises from the perspective of a geopolitical struggle between China and India. The discovery of a radio galaxy of at least 5 Mpc
No full textInternational audienceContext. Giant radio galaxies (GRGs, or colloquially ‘giants’) are the Universe’s largest structures generated by individual galaxies. They comprise synchrotron-radiating active galactic nucleus ejecta and attain cosmological (megaparsec-scale) lengths. However, the main mechanisms that drive their exceptional growth remain poorly understood.Aims. To deduce the main mechanisms that drive a phenomenon, it is usually instructive to study extreme examples. If there exist host galaxy characteristics that are an important cause for GRG growth, then the hosts of the largest GRGs are likely to possess them. Similarly, if there exist particular large-scale environments that are highly conducive to GRG growth, then the largest GRGs are likely to reside in them. For these reasons, we aim to perform a case study of the largest GRG available.Methods. We reprocessed the LOFAR Two-Metre Sky Survey DR2 by subtracting compact sources and performing multi-scale CLEAN de-convolutions at 60″ and 90″ resolution. The resulting images constitute the most sensitive survey yet for radio galaxy lobes, whose diffuse nature and steep synchrotron spectra have allowed them to evade previous detection attempts at higher resolution and shorter wavelengths. We visually searched these images for GRGs.Results. We have discovered Alcyoneus, a low-excitation radio galaxy with a projected proper length lp = 4.99 ± 0.04 Mpc. Both its jets and lobes are detected at very high significance, and the SDSS-based identification of the host, at spectroscopic redshift zspec = 0.24674 ± 6 × 10−5, is unambiguous. The total luminosity density at ν = 144 MHz is Lν = 8 ± 1 × 1025 W Hz−1, which is below average, though near median (percentile 45 ± 3%) for GRGs. The host is an elliptical galaxy with a stellar mass M⋆ = 2.4 ± 0.4 × 1011 M⊙ and a super-massive black hole mass M• = 4 ± 2 × 108 M⊙, both of which tend towards the lower end of their respective GRG distributions (percentiles 25 ± 9% and 23 ± 11%). The host resides in a filament of the Cosmic Web. Through a new Bayesian model for radio galaxy lobes in three dimensions, we estimate the pressures in the megaparsec-cubed-scale northern and southern lobes to be Pmin, 1 = 4.8 ± 0.3 × 10−16 Pa and Pmin, 2 = 4.9 ± 0.6 × 10−16 Pa, respectively. The corresponding magnetic field strengths are Bmin, 1 = 46 ± 1 pT and Bmin, 2 = 46 ± 3 pT.Conclusions. We have discovered what is in projection the largest known structure made by a single galaxy – a GRG with a projected proper length lp = 4.99 ± 0.04 Mpc. The true proper length is at least lmin = 5.04 ± 0.05 Mpc. Beyond geometry, Alcyoneus and its host are suspiciously ordinary: the total low-frequency luminosity density, stellar mass, and super-massive black hole mass are all lower than, though similar to, those of the medial GRG. Thus, very massive galaxies or central black holes are not necessary to grow large giants, and, if the observed state is representative of the source over its lifetime, neither is high radio power. A low-density environment remains a possible explanation. The source resides in a filament of the Cosmic Web, with which it might have significant thermodynamic interaction. The pressures in the lobes are the lowest hitherto found, and Alcyoneus therefore represents the most promising radio galaxy yet to probe the warm–hot inter-galactic medium.Key words: galaxies: active / galaxies: individual: Alcyoneus / galaxies: jets / intergalactic medium / radio continuum: galaxie
Rétrodiffusion coopérative efficace en énergie pour un système multi-utilisateurs à accès multiple NOMA
No full textInternational audienceDans cet article, l'efficacité énergétique d'un système multi-utilisateurs à accès multiple non orthogonal (NOMA) en présence d'un dispositif de rétrodiffusion est étudiée. L'optimisation de l'efficacité énergétique est formulée comme le compromis entre le débit somme et la consommation totale de puissance, ce qui s'avère être non convexe. Dans un premier temps, nous dérivons l'expression analytique du coefficient de réflexion optimal. De fac ¸on remarquable, cette expression permet de reformuler l'optimisation de la politique d'allocation de puissance en un problème d'optimisation convexe, qui a été résolu récemment. Cette solution globale peut être exploitée ensuite pour réduire la complexité de l'algorithme Dinkelbach pour maximiser le ratio débit somme vs. puissance totale. Nos résultats numériques montrent que la présence de dispositifs de rétrodiffusion améliore considérablement l'efficacité énergétique des systèmes NOMA
Pooling for first and last mile: integrating carpooling and transit
No full textInternational audienceWhile carpooling is widely adopted for long travels, it is by construction inefficient for daily commuting, where it is difficult to match drivers and riders, sharing similar origin, destination and time. To overcome this limitation, we present an Integrated system, which integrates carpooling into transit, in the line of the philosophy of Mobility as a Service. Carpooling acts as feeder to transit and transit stations act as consolidation points, where trips of riders and drivers meet, increasing potential matching. We present algorithms to construct multimodal rider trips (including transit and carpooling legs) and driver detours. Simulation shows that our Integrated system increases transit ridership and reduces auto-dependency, with respect to current practice, in which carpooling and transit are operated separately. Indeed, the Integrated system decreases the number of riders who are left with no feasible travel option and would thus be forced to use private cars. The simulation code is available as open source

Pastiches d'artisans, visions d’architectes : intervenir sur les maisons en pan-de-bois d’Alençon au XXe siècle
No full textInternational audienceLe pan-de-bois d’Alençon (Orne) contribue à l’image de la ville. Son état actuel est tributaire d’interventions anciennes, plus ou moins heureuses, qui produisent un grand éventail de cas allant de la très soignée chocolaterie Glatigny à la maison des Sept Colonnes, étayée depuis quinze ans. En plus de ce corpus, un autre ensemble bâti participe à la présence du pan-de-bois dans la ville : le faux. En béton, en enduit ciment peint, en bois, ce faux, nous le trouvons des années 1920 à nos jours sur des maisons bourgeoises, des pavillons ou des ensembles résidentiels. Il est également présent sur des façades de petits commerces, de maisons d’artisans ou d’ouvriers. Vrai et faux peuvent aussi se côtoyer, se compléter. Différentes situations existent et méritent analyse, notamment lorsque le pastiche acquière sa propre authenticité. La communication se propose de regarder avec ce tour d’horizon à l’échelle de la ville d’Alençon, les rencontres entre ce faux et ce vrai, ses interactions, ses interpénétrations. L’un inspire l’autre et l’autre prolonge l’un. Mais nous observons aussi des effacements, des annulations, des choix. Ces allers-retours ne sont pas seulement de l’ordre du matériel. Du fait qu’il concerne l’habitat et le cadre de vie, ils sont aussi pétris d’inconscient, d’héritage, de traditions de métiers alors que les matériaux changent, que les savoir-faire échappent aux mains. En le regardant de près, le faux pan-de-bois, à travers de multiples qualités de réalisation, se fait porteur de sens et marqueur de son temps et des populations qui l’ont produit

This Histoire de l’ancienne Bibracte appresent appelée Autun begins with a detailed architectural description of the ancient city and territory of Autun. However, D. Nault’s contribution is mostly ignored by antiquarians and scholars: on what material evidence is based the architectural restitution of the ancient city? Does this work really belong to the historical genre?Considering the book as a whole, it appears that this highly reconstructed description of the ancient remains is perfectly consistent with the way the author rewrites in depth the history of the Aedui during the Gallic War in order to rehabilitate them and to honor Autun by celebrating its former magnificence.En 1688, Denis Nault, un magistrat d’Autun, publie une Histoire de l’ancienne Bibracte appresent appelée Autun. Si l’essentiel de l’ouvrage consiste en une histoire de la guerre des Gaules présentée du point de vue éduen, ses premières pages contiennent une minutieuse description architecturale de l’antique Autun et de son territoire. Pourtant, la contribution laissée par D. Nault est la plupart du temps ignorée des historiens et des antiquaires ayant travaillé sur Autun : de fait, une lecture attentive de son contenu amène à s’interroger sur la manière dont le magistrat-antiquaire a construit sa restitution architecturale de l’antique cité éduenne et, plus largement, sur l’appartenance de ce texte au genre historique. Si l’on considère l’ouvrage dans sa globalité, on comprend la grande cohérence qu’il peut exister entre cette description très reconstruite des vestiges éduens et la façon dont D. Nault réécrit en profondeur l’histoire des Éduens pendant la guerre des Gaules en vue de les réhabiliter et de redorer le blason de la ville d’Autun en célébrant sa grandeur passée
