Collective labour supply : heterogeneity and nonparticipation
National audienceWe present identiÖcation and estimation results for the ìcollectiveî model of labour supply in which there are discrete choices, censoring of hours and nonparticipation in employment. We derive the collective restrictions on labour supply functions and contrast them with restrictions implied by the usual ìunitaryî framework. Using the large changes in the wage structure between men and women in the UK over the last two decades we estimate a collective labor supply model for married couples without children. The implications of the unitary framework are rejected while those of the collec- tive approach are not. The estimates of the sharing rule show that wages have a strong ináuence on bargaining power within couples
International audienceThis article presents an initial techno-stylistic analysis of 58 pottery sherds from four archaeological sites in the Fanian region, located south of the Guéra region (Tchad). The sites are all settlement sites linked to metallurgical sites. This exploratory workhighlights the yet little-know role of ceramics in this area. It reveals the rich archaeological potential of the Fanian area and highlights new techno-stylistic characteristics specific to local ceramic traditions. Technical similarities exist between the four sites analyzed, but the data are insufficient to establish close cultural links. Although the available data do not yet allow for an in-depth regional comparison, this study lays the foundations for a typology of local ceramic traditions and a ceramic corpus for the Fanian area. This work opens new perspectives for understanding the cultural dynamics of Guéra in general, and the Fanian area in particular.
How to Incorporate Children into Labor SupplyEquations? A General Framework
We provide a novel method for modeling and estimating the impact of children on labor supply decisions. We rely on the literature on equivalence scales and collective models. Our approach considers both the time and monetary costs of raising children. Using semiparametric restrictions on individual preferences, we identify the cost of children from the curvature of the labor supply equations with low data requirements. We apply the model to PSID data from the USA and investigate the women's labor supply sensitivity, the cost of children, and the women's price of time. We find that women's labor supply is highly sensitive to wage variations. In addition, we show that mothers allocate, on average, 44% of their net total expenditures to children. Finally, by comparing our findings to those derived from other studies using children's expense data, our model provides relatively consistent predictions regarding the cost of children
Competing Influences and Dialectal Models in the Language of Boeotian Proxeny Decrees (4th to 2nd Century BCE)
International audienceStudies of proxeny decrees, which granted a range of honours and privileges to foreign dignitaries, have often focused on the historical implications of these documents, the nationality of the proxenoi or the honours conferred, or, from a linguistic perspective, the choice of dialect used. This paper aims to examine the entire corpus of Boeotian proxeny decrees (4th to 2nd century BCE, 150+ inscriptions) in order to explore the different dialectal models which influenced the fixed wording of these documents, as well as the historical and political factors behind this process
Monitoring Ethical Tensions Encountered When Using Digital Health Solutions: Implementation of an Ethicovigilance Platform
International audienceDigital health is transforming healthcare by enhancing accessibility, efficiency, and personalized care. It facilitates telemedicine, provides clinicians with data-driven insights, and streamlines administrative processes to reduce costs and improve patient care. However, challenges persist, including privacy concerns, data security issues, and the risk of exacerbating inequalities. To address these challenges, France’s Digital Health Delegation (DNS) developed a Framework for Ethics in Digital Health (CENS), emphasizing principles such as accessibility, transparency, trustworthy AI, and sustainability. Despite this initiative, achieving consistent ethical compliance remains difficult. In response, the DNS launched the Ethicovigilance platform in late 2023, enabling users to report ethical concerns when using digital health solutions. By 2024, 27 reports were collected, with 11 fully investigated. Key issues included unauthorized access to health data, lack of transparency, and insufficient user autonomy. These cases highlight systemic vulnerabilities, such as data misuse and inequitable access. Promoting trust, transparency, inclusivity, and accountability, alongside clear stakeholder responsibilities, is essential to align digital health with ethical standards and improve patient outcomes
Digital Authoritarianism in the Making: Repression and Resistance on the Russian Internet
International audienceOn the genesis of digital authoritarianism in the Russian Internet space, from peace to war. How did the authoritarian dynamic that is currently plaguing the Russian internet (Runet) come to dominate a digital space that was initially free? Digital Authoritarianism in the Making reveals the policies regulating the Runet, resituating them within their historical context starting in the early 2010s and ending with the start of the full-scale war against Ukraine in February 2022. It offers a political sociology of the Russian digital space, including the variety of actors who have sought to occupy it: access providers, developers, journalists, activists, web professionals, and mobilized citizens. Informed by five years of original fieldwork, the book highlights both repressive policies and online resistance, including lesser-known social and technical practices used to circumvent constraints. While the Runet's shift toward authoritarianism is specific to Russia, this model is expanding to all the regions where Moscow is extending its influence. This book is a must-read for all those who pay attention to the coercive uses of the internet, in Russia and beyond
