Rye-based data firm has tapped into a pipeline of talent through Durham
When Cody Shea, co-founder of Incline Analytics (https://www.inclineanalytics.com/) in Rye, needed to grow his data analytics firm, he didn't have to look far.
What began with hiring one University of New Hampshire graduate has turned into an office of Wildcats.
"We just started naturally, organically hiring UNH grads and said, 'Okay, that seems to be our feeder pipeline; let's figure out a way to build momentum on that
initiative,'" Shea says.  
That momentum continued with two interns — Jake MacInnis ’24, ’25G and Emmanuel Fagbenle ’25G — from UNH’s Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA)
program (https://paulcollege.unh.edu/program/ms/business-analytics) during spring 2025. 
Gaining A Deeper Understanding of Business Analytics  
MacInnis, who completed his undergraduate degree in information systems and business analytics (https://paulcollege.unh.edu/business-
administration/program/bs/business-administration-major-information-systems-business-analytics-option) at UNH Paul College, started an accelerated path as
an undergrad, allowing him to take graduate courses during his senior year.

 “I wanted to sharpen my skills and gain deeper expertise in the tech and analytics space,” MacInnis says   
Fagbenle, who studied civil engineering in Nigeria, discovered his passion for data science through an online course during his undergraduate studies. After
working two years at a major insurance company in Nigeria, Fagbenle decided to make a change. 
"I needed the academic know-how, not just me going around YouTube and getting boot camps," Fagbenle says. “I have a friend studying civil engineering at UNH,
and he recommended the school to me. I checked out the business analytics curriculum, and it made so much sense to me.”  
Learning Beyond the Classroom  
Incline Analytics helps multi-site retail health businesses — especially those backed by private equity — turn data into a strategic asset. MacInnis and Fagbenle
work at the firm two days a week and are making a positive impact, according to Shea.  
"Emanuel's main focus has been working with Robotic Process Automation (RPA) technology to automate report downloads from client systems, making those
processes more defensible with lower failure rates," Shea says. "Jake has focused on front-end reporting using Microsoft Power BI, updating report data patterns to
work seamlessly with our new standards."  
Additionally, the firm allows the students to explore their interests and includes them in other projects.  
"I jump from each lily pad to help out in any sector that I can," MacInnis says. "It really helps me grasp the full circle of what we're doing here, from helping with
presentations to updating and creating reports.”  
Fagbenle adds, “I love researching and finding new ways to get things done. With the rapid advancements in AI, I'm constantly inspired to explore what others in
the industry are doing and see how we can apply that to our work." 
Preparing for a Career in Analytics  
Both students have found that their coursework benefits their professional development, while their internship enhances their understanding of course concepts.  
Fagbenle appreciates the statistics classes that explain machine learning models he previously encountered professionally. 
"I always saw the data science team talking about amazing machine learning models, but I never understood what they were talking about," he says. "Now, I'm
being taught about these different models, and it makes so much sense."  
MacInnis values the program's project-based learning approach that teaches technical skills and collaboration, which he says will serve him well in his goal to
break into the sports analytics industry.  
“I love connecting with people and can talk to anyone about anything. My goal is to combine that with the technical side of creating something complex or helpful,”
MacInnis says. “A lot of what we do is more complicated than people realize, and I want to be the person who can both build the solution and clearly communicate
how it works.” 
Fagbenle says the internship has sparked an interest in automation, which he plans to pursue.  
Opportunities in Business Analytics  
Shea is optimistic about the future of analytics, especially as AI evolves. He encourages students to be curious
about AI — emphasizing that new technologies often create more opportunities than they replace — while
focusing on fundamentals like understanding and organizing business data.  
“I think there’s an underappreciation for what I call ‘blocking and tackling’ — solving fundamental business
questions. Clients often need help answering what seems like a simple question, like ‘How many patients did
we see yesterday?’ but depending on the systems and data involved, that can be incredibly complex,” Shea
says. “It’s the practical, scalable solutions that really move the needle.”  
With students like MacInnis and Fagbenle already contributing meaningful work, Shea sees the opportunity for
additional collaboration, including welcoming an undergraduate intern this summer.
"UNH is a regional player producing good products, people with skills that we value," says Shea. "By nature of UNH being
within our geography and teaching coursework that we find very useful, it's a great starting point for training our employees.
We're going to continue that relationship."

UNH Names Jeannette E. Riley Provost and Executive Vice
President for Academic Affairs

Riley ’91G to assume duties June 30
Jeannette E. Riley ’91G will be the University of New Hampshire’s next provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, the university announced April 22.
Riley will assume her duties on June 30. 
Currently the dean of the University of Rhode Island’s College of Arts and Sciences, Riley is a seasoned academic leader and noted scholar.  
“I am thrilled to welcome Jen back to UNH and to my leadership team,” UNH President Elizabeth Chilton says. “Her wealth of experience at public research
universities, particularly in change management, and her track record of engaging stakeholder groups in strategic planning and execution, will be critical as we
position UNH for continued success.”

Since joining URI as dean in 2017, Riley has grown the profile and prestige of her college, integrating online programs, launching a new budget model, forging new
partnerships with area schools and businesses, and expanding experiential learning opportunities for undergraduates.  
“Jen brings a demonstrated commitment to shared governance, advocating for the public universities and promoting student success,” says Michele Dillon, dean
of UNH’s College of Liberal Arts, who co-chaired the search committee. “I look forward to working with her for the benefit of UNH and our community.” 
As provost Riley will lead UNH’s academic operations and serve as a key member of the university’s leadership team, working to advance UNH's scholarly,
teaching, and outreach  missions across campuses, geographies, and modalities. She will oversee all of UNH’s colleges, schools, and institutes, as well as
enrollment management, contract administration, and the office of research, economic engagement and outreach. 
“I am genuinely excited to join the University of New Hampshire and to partner with faculty, staff, and university leadership to further UNH’s mission,” Riley said. “I
see in UNH an institution ready to tackle the challenges of higher education, a focus to redesign its budgetary model to facilitate growth and innovation, strategic
investments to expand impact via online and distance learning, a faculty recognized for its research and impact, and a campus as a whole focused on student well-
being and success.” 
Prior to URI, Jen spent 15 years at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where she served as the dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, the academic
director of online education and chair of the department of English, among other roles. She holds a doctorate in English from the University of New Mexico, as well
as a master’s in English from UNH, and a bachelor’s in English from Colby College.

Undergraduate research turns curiosity and passion into skills and real-world solutions
Meet some of UNH’s earliest-career researchers: undergraduates.
For these students, and hundreds like them, participating in research — working alongside faculty and graduate student mentors to influence real-world change
and solve global challenges — deepens their college education. It’s what UNH President Elizabeth Chilton calls the “superpower” of a public research institution
like UNH.
And while conducting research boosts students’ skills and knowledge in their chosen subject, its benefits transcend the lab or the library. “There is research going
back decades that shows students who engage in undergrad research are more confident in their abilities and have higher levels of self-efficacy — in other words,
they believe they can do what they need to in order to succeed,” says Jennifer Griffith, associate professor of organizational behavior. “Both of those characteristics
are associated with positive career and life outcomes.”

“I remember the first morning I got to hold two saltmarsh sparrow 
nestlings. It was around 5 a.m., and I had worried about their little nest
through all of the rainstorms that weekend. They were so small, and they
snuggled up in the palm of my hand to escape the morning chill as I tucked
them back into their woven home and wished them the best. Watching
them go from eggs, to nestlings, to birds flying around the marsh taught
me exactly why we do what we do.”

Research: Converting methane, a potent greenhouse gas, to ethane using a light energy
catalyst.
“My perseverance has improved, due to the many failed attempts at
the beginning of my summer research. I have found a love for the lab
that will help me continue to grad school where I plan to pursue a
Ph.D. in chemical engineering.”

Hometown: Simsbury, Conn.
Mentor: Rose Pruiksma, senior lecturer of music
Research: New England contra dance “chestnuts,” dances that are always accompanied by a
specific tune.
“I was excited to go to several fiddle camps and conduct ethnographic research by participating in dances, taking classes on
New England fiddle music and interviewing about 10 musicians who are experts on New England contra dance.”

Hometown: Natick, Mass.
Mentor: Laura Kloepper, associate professor of biological sciences
Research: Analyzing the vocalizations of the common tern to provide insight into conservation
efforts.
“I made two trips out to the tern colony on the Isles of Shoals, where I had
the opportunity to … gather observational data by watching the colony for
two days. Getting paid to sit and look at birds all day is really all I want in
life.”

environmental science
Hometown: Newington, Conn.
Mentor: Jessica Ernakovich, associate professor of natural resources and the environment
Research: Investigating microbial communities in three types of permafrost, which is a carbon
sink and important to carbon cycling in the Arctic.
“Working in a walk-in freezer to subsample permafrost cores was really fun
even though it’s so cold in there! It’s very rewarding to be able to ask a
question that most people probably aren’t thinking about and work your
way to the answer. The Arctic is a special place that deserves our attention.”
Caylin Grove ’25
genetics
Hometown: Hollis, N.H.
Mentor: Bonnie Brown, professor of biological sciences
Research: Using genetic techniques to test Eastern oyster larvae in Great Bay for disease, to
discern whether disease is driving the decline of the oyster population.
“This research gave me an opportunity to get field work under my belt. I
hope to go to graduate school, and being able to use tools that pertain to
my field will give me a leg up … and set me up for success.”

viruses, fungi, plants and animals, farming practices can play a critical role in maintaining this balance. Scientists with the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment
Station (https://colsa.unh.edu/new-hampshire-agricultural-experiment-station) (NHAES) at the University of New Hampshire recently published findings showing
that soil tillage intensity and the use of pesticide-treated seeds adversely affect arthropod communities—organisms like ground beetles, ants and spiders that
contribute to controlling pests, managing weed seeds and performing other essential ecological services.
The study (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.agee.2024.109338), published in the journal Agriculture, Ecosystems & Environment
(https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/agriculture-ecosystems-and-environment), was conducted by NHAES scientist Rich Smith
(https://colsa.unh.edu/person/richard-smith), professor in the UNH College of Life Sciences and Agriculture, doctoral candidate Isaac Ativor
(https://sites.usnh.edu/agroecologylab/isaac-n-avitor/) and research scientist Nick Warren (https://colsa.unh.edu/person/nicholas-warren). The researchers found
that higher-intensity tillage—turning or disturbing soil prior to planting to loosen and aerate compacted soil, reduce weeds and incorporate fertilizer and crop
residue—impacted arthropod diversity and abundance more than the use pesticide-treated seeds, which help reduce the emergence of weeds.
The impacts of pesticide-treated seeds varied, however, across arthropod groups the and the type of tillage method. For example, pesticide-treated seeds reduced
the abundance of spiders, which are important predators of crop pests, but only in plots with strip tillage—a tillage practice that involves disturbing narrow strips
of soil for planting and leaving the rest undisturbed.
“The tillage findings suggest that methods involving less soil disturbance, such as strip-tillage or no-tillage systems, could better support ecological benefits,” said
Smith. “However, both findings highlight the importance of looking at farming systems holistically, showing that tillage and seed treatments interact with the
broader ecosystem in ways that can either support or diminish the key services that arthropods provide.”
To evaluate how farming practices influenced arthropod populations, the researchers examined three tillage systems at the UNH Kingman Research Farm
(https://colsa.unh.edu/facility/kingman-research-farm): strip tillage; full tillage, where soil is completely turned over to prepare for planting; and no tillage, which
minimizes soil disturbance by planting seeds directly into undisturbed soil. The study also compared the effects of using pesticide-treated seeds or untreated seeds
to produce corn and soybeans. Arthropod abundance, diversity and insects’ weed seed predation were monitored over three growing seasons, providing insights
into how these variables interacted across different environmental conditions.
The team’s findings have practical implications for farmers in New Hampshire and similar agricultural regions, explained Ativor, lead author of the study. A key
finding was that soil practices that adversely impacted overall arthropod abundance limits the insects’ ability to perform critical ecosystem functions such as
preying on and eliminating weed seeds. As such, farmers could actually see reductions in weeds as a result of adopting soil management practices that limit soil
disturbance.
“Maintaining arthropod populations is critical—not only for the health of farmlands but also for the broader ecological systems that sustain agriculture, such as
pollination networks and nutrient cycling,” said Ativor.
Smith added, “We hope these results will provide farmers with a fuller understanding of how these agricultural practices impact ecosystem health. Ideally, by
prioritizing methods that support beneficial organisms and the services they provide, we can work toward more sustainable and resilient farming systems that
benefit both agricultural productivity and the environment.”

Arthropods, which include a diverse range of insects and arachnids, belong to the phylum Arthropoda and share traits such as segmented bodies,
jointed appendages, and exoskeletons made of chitin. In agricultural ecosystems, some of the families contribute to essential ecological functions that
support sustainable farming practices and healthier crop production.

Campus visit celebrates expanding collaboration
Leadership from Lonza Biologics, Inc. visited the tissue culture lab in UNH’s Spaulding Hall March 24 to celebrate a growing collaboration between the university
and Lonza, one of the largest pharmaceutical manufacturers in the world.
The tissue culture lab is currently being utilized by teams of students from UNH’s College of Life Sciences and Agriculture (COLSA) who are working on research
projects with Lonza scientists that are designed to address biomanufacturing challenges. Lonza’s Portsmouth, New Hampshire site helped outfit the lab, donating
an array of lab supplies and equipment.
The visit comes on the heels of the recently announced Lonza Scholars program, which begins in 2025 and was designed to enhance educational and career
opportunities in the life sciences industry for select UNH students.
UNH President Elizabeth Chilton was on hand to welcome Lonza leadership to Spaulding Hall, celebrating the expanding collaboration with the company and the
impact it could have on UNH students and workforce development in the state.
“Collaborations like this are vital to providing the engaging, hands-on learning opportunities that are a hallmark of the UNH undergraduate student experience,”
Chilton said in her remarks to attendees. “The partnership between UNH and Lonza has a lasting impact on our campus and the future paths of our students."

At the start of the spring 2025 semester, COLSA students began working on several independent research projects under the guidance of UNH faculty co-mentors
and scientists at Lonza Biologics. These projects focus on improving processes and workflows at different stages in the manufacture of biologics — a class of
medicines produced by living organisms.
“Lonza handles technical challenges, in terms of optimizing the growth of cells or the purification of proteins, that are suitable for students to work on — and [the
partnership] gives the students a real problem to solve,” says Rick Cote, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology and the director of UNH’s Center of
Integrated Biomedical and Bioengineering Research. “This is something students will be able to put on their resumes when they graduate — they’ll have the
experience to say they were involved in process improvement in a manufacturing environment.”
The projects will allow the college to accommodate more students who want to be engaged in applied research and provide them with a better understanding of
industrial research and process development. They could also lead to summer internships at Lonza for the students involved.
Over the years, many COLSA graduates have found employment with Lonza, and the company has offered internships for students and research collaborations
with faculty. Lonza has also made generous donations to COLSA, including bioreactors, centrifuges, water baths, balances and other lab equipment, as well as
glassware and a variety of laboratory supplies.
The Lonza Scholars program, beginning in 2025, will award an annual scholarship to four exceptional incoming first-year students, supporting the students for the
four-year duration of their bachelor’s programs, subject to academic performance requirements. Additional students will be admitted to the program each year
until 2028, with the initiative supporting 16 active scholars at its peak.
The program will be open to incoming UNH first-year students demonstrating academic excellence who plan to major in biology, biochemistry or bioengineering,
with a preference for New England applicants.
“This collaboration with UNH underscores Lonza’s commitment to empowering the next generation of leaders and fostering academic excellence in life sciences,”
Christophe Royer, site head at Lonza’s Portsmouth facility, said in announcing the Lonza Scholars program in February 2025. “It is exciting to think about the
opportunities the Lonza Scholars Program will bring for participating students, and we look forward to supporting their development through this important
initiative.”

Organization surprises Haynes with honor at annual TRIO Day celebration
Richard Haynes, director of admissions, recruitment and access at the University of New Hampshire, attended a Feb. 21 TRIO Day event led by the New Hampshire
Educational Opportunity Association (NHEOA) assuming his only role would be as keynote speaker.
He left the celebration as a celebrated honoree.
Haynes had planned to address the 500 TRIO high school students from throughout New England who were attending the event, an annual celebration to
commemorate “National TRIO Day,” established in 1986 to recognize the achievements of the Federal TRIO programs in communities across the country. He hadn’t
planned to be recognized with the NHEOA Champion of Educational Opportunity Award, which the organized surprised him with during the festivities.
The award is designed to recognize individuals or organizations within the state of New Hampshire who have demonstrated commitment and support of equal
access to higher education. Haynes was surprised with the award after his keynote address, which focused on his life's journey and the power of education to
transform lives.

admissions team as associate director for diversity recruiting in 2005 and in
2018 was the recipient of the university’s Presidential Award of Excellence, the
highest honor bestowed upon university staff.
The NHEOA is a nonprofit organization that brings together professionals in
educational opportunity programs that support and prepare traditionally
underserved students for success in education. There are nine TRIO programs
at four host institutions throughout New Hampshire, including UNH, which is
home to UNH:TRIO Upward Bound, Educational Talen Search, Student Support
Services (TRIO Scholars) and the McNair Scholars program.
National TRIO Day began in 1986, when a congressional resolution declared
Feb. 28 of that year be designated as such. Since then, the TRIO community
reserves the fourth Saturday in February as National TRIO Day to increase
awareness and celebrate the positive impact of federal TRIO programs in U.S.
communities.
The New England celebration every February is an overnight event, which
includes college tours, a keynote address, special activities and networking,
workshops and a college fair.
