Oxylipins Derived from PUFAs in Cardiometabolic Diseases: Mechanism of Actions and Possible Nutritional Interactions

    No full text
Oxylipins are oxidized fatty acids, both saturated and unsaturated, formed through pathways that involve singlet oxygen or dioxygen-mediated oxygenation reactions and are primarily produced by enzyme families such as cyclooxygenases, lipoxygenases, and cytochrome P450. These lipid-based complex bioactive molecules are pivotal signal mediators, acting in a hormone-like manner in the pathophysiology of numerous diseases, especially cardiometabolic diseases via modulating plenty of mechanisms. It has been reported that omega-6 and omega-3 oxylipins are important novel biomarkers of cardiometabolic diseases. Moreover, collected literature has noted that diet and dietary components, especially fatty acids, can modulate these oxygenated lipid products since they are mainly derived from dietary omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) or linoleic acid and α-linolenic by elongation and desaturation pathways. This comprehensive review aims to examine their correlations to cardiometabolic diseases and how diets modulate oxylipins. Also, some aspects of developing new biomarkers and therapeutical utilization are detailed in this review.3959959

Investigation of a public building from the viewpoint of the fire safety building regulations: A case study

    No full text
In Turkeybuilding fires have occurred frequently throughout history, causing serious losses and still continuing. However, it is a scientific fact that these losses can be largely prevented by taking fire safety measures. In our country, with the "The Fire Safety Building Regulation" (BYKHY) issued in 2007, bringing existing buildings into compliance with these regulations and constructing new buildings according to these standards can help prevent building fires to a great extent. For a safe working system, the whole fire protection system needs to be tested periodically so that the system works better in case of an emergency. In this study, the compliance of Gümüşhane University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (MDBF) building with the criteria specified in the regulation was examined under 14 different heading lists. In addition, risk analysis was carried out by applying Fine Kinney method in the headings where deficiencies were detected. After the examinations, it was determined that the building meets the criteria specified in the regulation in 5 headings and there are some deficiencies in the other 9 headings. The risk analysis revealed that especially areas such as escape stairs, emergency lighting, boiler room, external escape stairs and hydrant system contain very high risks. This study emphasises that necessary precautions should be taken to reduce the very high and high risk levels identified in the building or to reduce them to an acceptable level. © 2024, Gumushane University. No full text
This study investigated 29 butter samples from Trabzon, Turkey. Cholesterol contents ranged from 134.13 to 325 mg/100 g, α-tocopherol contents ranged from 1.62 to 3.37 mg/100 g, and β-carotene contents ranged from 4.46 to 15.60 μg/g. Fatty acid composition analysis showed variations, with palmitic acid ranging from 26.11 % to 44.25 %, oleic acid from 19.55 % to 29.80 %, and linoleic acid from 1.63 % to 3.04 %. A total of 44 aroma components were identified. Traditional butter samples exhibited differences in aroma components and fatty acid composition compared to commercial butter. Notably, traditional butter had higher concentrations of octanoic and n-decanoic acids than commercial butter. Moreover, some aroma components such as N-butanoic acid 2-ethylhexyl ester, decanoic acid, and pentadecane were found exclusively in traditional butters. Traditional butter showed higher α-tocopherol and β-carotene contents. These findings underscore the distinct chemical profiles of traditional and commercial butter samples, influenced by production methods and possibly geographical origin. © 2024 The Author(s

    No full text
Introduction: Clinical practices constitute an important part of nursing education and students are expected to gain the ability to plan patient care during nursing education. Aim: It aimed to construct North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) nursing diagnoses in nursing students’ patient care plans according to the Functional Health Patterns model and to evaluate them according to the Nursing Intervention Classification (NIC) and Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC) classification systems. Methods: The descriptive study's population included 198 second-year nursing students from a university. Students' care plans were used as a data gathering form, and 176 care plans were included in the research. The data was gathered from functional health patterns, NIC, and NOC system questionnaires. Results: Nursing diagnoses were listed as infection risk (88.6%), fall risk (79.5%), and bleeding (56.8%). Nursing diagnoses belonging to sexuality-reproductive, coping-stress tolerance, and value-belief sub-categories of functional health patterns could not be reached from the care plans. Conclusion: There is a need for classification methods to objectively evaluate nursing practices, make quantifiable contributions to care, and improve the profession's scientific underpinnings. It is hoped that evidence-based care can be provided by raising pupils' knowledge of classification systems. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group

Exploring the associations between ankle dorsal and plantar flexion strength, reactive strength index, and balance in elite youth soccer players

    No full text
Background: Enhanced muscular strength has been widely acknowledged as a fundamental determinant of improved performance in the lower extremities. However, the specific impact of ankle strength on explosive strength and balance remains inadequately elucidated. Consequently, this study aims to (a) evaluate balance, reactive power, and flexor–extensor muscle balances in soccer players, and (b) evaluate ankle dorsal and plantar flexion muscle strength as predictive factors for reactive strength index and balance performance. Methodology: A cohort comprising 38 actively engaged Turkish National League soccer players participated in the study. The assessment encompassed explosive power through a drop jump, dynamic balance utilizing a moving disc, and ankle strength measured with a handheld dynamometer. Results: The findings revealed that dominant lower limb dorsal flexion strength emerged as a significant predictor of both reactive strength (R2 = 0.106, p < 0.05) and balance (R2 = 0.121, p < 0.05). Similarly, non-dominant lower limb dorsal flexion strength was identified as a significant predictor of reactive strength (R2 = 0.362, p < 0.05). Furthermore, the study established that dominant lower limb plantar flexion strength significantly predicted balance (R2 = 0.121, p < 0.05), while non-dominant lower limb plantar flexion strength served as a significant predictor of both reactive strength (R2 = 0.148, p < 0.05) and balance (R2 = 0.179, p < 0.05). Conclusions: Consequently, these findings emphasize the significance of incorporating targeted exercises designed to enhance intrinsic foot musculature, thereby augmenting both explosive strength and balance in athletes. While acknowledging the persistent importance of strength assessment in evaluating lower extremity performance, our results underscore the critical role played by ankle muscle strength in the execution of explosive strength and balance. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag Italia S.r.l., part of Springer Nature 2024

VREDNOVANJE PROVEDENO MEĐU POTROŠAČIMA PAMETNIH ROBOTSKIH USISAVAČA U OKVIRU PROŠIRENOGA MODELA POTVRDE OČEKIVANJA

Purpose – The present research study extends the Expectation-Confirmation Model (ECM) by focusing on satisfaction, continuance intention, and recommendation intention among smart robotic vacuum cleaner users. The impacts of battery life concern and perceived privacy factors on satisfaction and continuance intention of the smart robotic vacuum cleaner were investigated by adding the variables of battery life concern, perceived privacy, and recommendation intention in the ECM. Design/methodology/approach – The participants of this study consisted of smart robotic vacuum cleaner users in Turkey. The snowball sampling method, as one of the non-random sampling methods, was used to reach the participants; data was collected using an online survey created with Google Forms, asking the participants to share the survey link with people around them who have smart robotic vacuum cleaners. A total of 218 smart robotic vacuum cleaner users participated in the study between March 1 and May 1, 2023. Findings and implications – Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used as the data analysis technique in the study. While the ECM was confirmed as a result of the SEM analysis, an important finding was that consumers with battery life concerns intend to continue using the smart robotic vacuum cleaner despite a negative relationship between battery life concern and satisfaction. While the effect of perceived privacy on continuance intention was not significant, satisfaction was found to have a significant effect on continuance intention. Given that rtificial intelligence-related businesses face fierce competition, organizations that wish to prosper in this environment must excel in a variety of areas, ranging from product design to marketing and from sales policies to post-sales assistance. Considering the findings, determining the factors that affect the satisfaction and intention to continue using robot vacuum cleaners will be a guide for smart robot vacuum cleaner manufacturers and marketers. At the same time, the fact that the issue has been investigated within the framework of a model will also make significant contributions to the literature. Limitations – Different factors influence smart robotic vacuum cleaner users’ satisfaction and desire to continue using them, but only battery-life concerns and perceived privacy variables were incorporated into the ECM model in this research study. Another limitation is connected to the research sample. Because the snowball sampling method was employed to obtain data for the research, its findings cannot be generalized as they cover only smart robotic vacuum cleaner users who participated in the survey. Originality/value – The ECM employed in the study was expanded by including the variables of battery-life concern, perceived privacy, and recommendation intention. A general lack of information among potential consumers regarding artificial intelligence and smart robotic vacuum cleaners, which is highly fascinating and a source of curiosity, as well as the lack of research on this issue in the literature, underscore the significance of this research study. By integrating and expanding the ECM for application to consumers using smart robotic vacuum cleaners, this study adds a fresh viewpoint to the literature. © 2024, University of Zagreb, Faculty of Economics and Business Zagreb. Extension of TODIM Method Based on Distance Measures of Decomposed Fuzzy Sets

    No full text
Fuzzy sets allow elements to have partial membership in a set, represented by a membership value between 0 and 1. This feature enables fuzzy sets to model imprecise or vague concepts. Decomposed fuzzy sets, an extension of fuzzy sets, have introduced a novel perspective in the literature by incorporating the Kano model into risk assessment. These sets have also paved the way for new approaches in decision-making methods, highlighting their functional and dysfunctional elements. In this paper, we propose a distance measure for decomposed fuzzy sets and subsequently extend the TODIM method based on this distance measure to DFSs. Then, we provide a numerical example to illustrate its effectiveness and practicality. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024

Pre-Exercise Caffeine and Sodium Bicarbonate: Their Effects on Isometric Mid-Thigh Pull Performance in a Crossover, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study

    No full text
Caffeine and sodium bicarbonate are extensively researched ergogenic aids known for their potential to enhance exercise performance. The stimulant properties of caffeine on the central nervous system, coupled with the buffering capacity of sodium bicarbonate, have been associated with improved athletic performance. This has led to investigations of their combined effects on strength. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of isolated and combined caffeine and sodium bicarbonate consumption on strength using the isometric mid-thigh pull test (IMTP). Nineteen male college students (age 23.6 ± 1.6 years) participated in this crossover, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. They were exposed to the following conditions: control (no supplement), placebo (20 g maltodextrin), caffeine (6 mg/kg), sodium bicarbonate (0.3 g/kg), and a combination of caffeine and sodium bicarbonate. Supplements and placebo were diluted in water and consumed 60 min prior to the IMTP tests. Two 5 s IMTP trials were performed at 40–60% and 60–80% of One Repetition of Maximum (1RM) with a 60 s rest between. Consumption of caffeine or Caf + NaHCO3 did not significantly change peak IMTP strength values at any intensity (p = 0.110). The peak IMTP values did not show significant differences between conditions or from control condition values (1091 ± 100 N) to Caf (1224 ± 92 N), NaHCO3 (1222 ± 74 N), and Caf ± NaHCO3 (1152 ± 109 N). However, the test of the results of the ANOVA analysis of repeated measures of effect within the caffeine condition was significant for the increase in IMTP relative strength compared to control (p 0.05). In summary, caffeine supplementation alone, taken 60 min before exercise, positively affects submaximal strength performance. In contrast, sodium bicarbonate, whether taken alone or in combination with caffeine, does not enhance submaximal strength in the IMTP tests. © 2024 by the authors

[Puncte fierbinți strategice: îngrădirea Rusiei de către NATO în zona Mării Negre și în regiunea arctică]

    No full text
This study examines the strategic significance of NATO’s containment policy in the Black Sea and Arctic regions and its impact on Russia’s geopolitical and military responses. These areas, once peripheral to play only a minor role in global security dynamics, have become critical flashpoints because of NATO enlargement and increasing Russian aggression. By applying George Kennan’s containment theory to NATO’s post-Cold War strategy, this study examines how NATO’s actions have contributed to the escalation of tensions in these regions. The analysis addresses the challenges and risks NATO faces in maintaining its containment approach and offers insights into the future relationship between NATO and Russia. © 2024 “Codrul Cosminului”
