Decoding coffee cardiometabolic potential: Chemical composition, nutritional, and health relationships

    No full text
Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages worldwide, recognized for its unique taste and aroma and for its social and health impacts. Coffee contains a plethora of nutritional and bioactive components, whose content can vary depending on their origin, processing, and extraction methods. Gathered evidence in literature shows that the regular coffee consumption containing functional compounds (e.g., polysaccharides, phenolic compounds, and melanoidins) can have potential beneficial effects on cardiometabolic risk factors such as abdominal adiposity, hyperglycemia, and lipogenesis. On the other hand, coffee compounds, such as caffeine, diterpenes, and advanced glycation end products, may be considered a risk for cardiometabolic health. The present comprehensive review provides up-to-date knowledge on the structure–function relationships between different chemical compounds present in coffee, one of the most prevalent beverages present in human diet, and cardiometabolic health. © 2024 Institute of Food Technologists®.3913700

Comparison of choroidal thickness, superficial and deep retinal vascular indices, and foveal avascular zones: Martial arts athletes vs healthy non-athletes

    No full text
Aim: The study aims to compare choroidal thickness, deep and superficial retinal capillary plexuses, and foveal avascular zone (FAZ) parameters in elite martial arts athletes and a healthy sedentary control group. Methods: The study included martial arts athletes (32 individuals, 64 eyes) and healthy sedentary persons (43 individuals with healthy sedentary lifestyles, 86 eyes) aged 18–35 years. In this single non-repeated observational and cross-sectional study, choroidal thickness, superficial and deep retinal capillary plexuses, and FAZ measurements were measured using Swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA) and compared between groups. Results: No statistically significant differences were found (p > 0.05) in age, IOP, AL (axial length), and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) parameters between groups. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups in choroidal thickness, superficial and deep retinal capillary plexuses, and FAZ parameters determined by the OCTA method (p > 0.05). Conclusion: In our study, we observed that the retinal and choroidal structures of martial art athletes and healthy sedentary individuals were similar. This observation implies that the putative microvascular effects on the choroid and retina in martial arts, especially those based on the anaerobic energy system, may reflect similar outcomes to those observed in individuals with sedentary lifestyles characterized by healthiness. © 2024 The Author(s)3897711

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate professional nurses’ general attitudes toward artificial intelligence, their knowledge and perceptions of ChatGPT usage, and the influencing factors. Methods: The population of the research consists of nurses who follow a social media platform account in Turkey. The sample of the study consisted of 288 nurses who participated in the study between December 2023 and March 2024. Data were collected through an account on a social media platform via Google Forms using the Information Identification Questionnaire for ChatGPT and Artificial Intelligence Programs and the General Attitudes to Artificial Intelligence Scale (GAAIS). Results: The mean scores obtained from the overall GAAIS and its Positive Attitudes subscale from the participants in this study were 67.54 ± 13.14 and 41.89 ± 11.24, respectively. Of the participants, 48.3% knew about ChatGPT and artificial intelligence programs. Of the participants, 27.8% used ChatGPT and artificial intelligence programs. Their scores for the Positive Attitude subscale were higher than were the scores of those who did not use such programs. Of the participants, 84.4% thought that nurses should be made aware of ChatGPT and artificial intelligence programs, 67% thought that the use of these programs would contribute to nurses’ professional development, 42.4% thought that the use of these programs would not reduce nurses’ workload, and 58.3% thought that the use of these programs would positively affect patient care. Conclusion: In this study, it can be said that nurses in Turkey have positive attitudes toward integrating ChatGPT and AI programs to improve patient outcomes and add them to nursing practices. Implications for nursing practice: The present study in which nurses’ attitudes toward the implementation of ChatGPT and artificial intelligence programs were investigated is expected to provide information for healthcare institutions, policy makers and artificial intelligence developers on the integration of ChatGPT and artificial intelligence into nursing practice. It is necessary to create environments that use AI technologies that reduce the nursing workload of nurses in the clinical area and positively affect the quality of patient care. © The Author(s) 2024

In today's technology, information spreads quickly through online social networks, making our lives easier. However, when false news is shared without critical evaluation, it can harm society and affect social, political and economic aspects as it reaches a wide audience. At this point, it is important to develop content verification and confirmation systems. In this study, the aim is to conduct monolingual and cross-lingual classification on a multi-class dataset containing English and German news content. We applied data preprocessing, including CountVectorizer and stylometric feature extraction, before classification. Feature selection was made using the genetic algorithm, which is an algorithm based on the idea of evolution in nature. Selected features were classified by Random Forest, Logistic Regression, Multinomial Naive Bayes, Decision Tree and KNearest Neighbors machine learning algorithms. In the classification process, Multinomial Naive Bayes achieved 58.49% Accuracy and 42.97% macro-F1 for monolingual English news texts, while Logistic Regression achieved 45.39% Accuracy and 37.70% macro-F1 in Cross-lingual classification using English and German news texts. Significantly successful results were obtained compared to studies conducted with the same dataset. In addition, the same methodology was applied to the ISOT dataset. 99.48% and 99.62% macro-F1 were obtained by Logistic Regression and Decision Tree algorithms, respectively. © 2024, Gumushane University. Aggregation operators of complex fuzzy Z-number sets and their applications in multi-criteria decision making

    No full text
Fuzzy sets (FSs) are a flexible and powerful tool for reasoning about uncertain situations that cannot be adequately expressed by classical sets. However, these sets fall short in two areas. The first is the reliability of this tool. Z-numbers are an extension of fuzzy numbers that improve the representation of uncertainty by combining two important components: restriction and reliability. The second is the problems that need to be solved simultaneously. Complex fuzzy sets (CFSs) overcome this problem by adding a second dimension to fuzzy numbers and simultaneously adding connected elements to the solution. However, they are insufficient when it comes to problems involving these two areas. We cannot express real-life problems that need to be solved at the same time and require the reliability of the information given with any set approach given in the literature. Therefore, in this study, we propose the complex fuzzy Z-number set (CFZNS), a generalization of Z-numbers and CFS, which fills this gap. We provide the operational laws of CFZNS along with some properties. Additionally, we define two essential aggregation operators called complex fuzzy Z-number weighted averaging (CFZNWA) and complex fuzzy Z-number weighted geometric (CFZNWG) operators. Then, we present an illustrative example to demonstrate the proficiency and superiority of the proposed approach. Thus, we process multiple fuzzy expressions simultaneously and take into account the reliability of these fuzzy expressions in applications. Furthermore, we compare the results with the existing set operations to confirm the advantages and demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach. Considering the simultaneous expression of fuzzy statements, this study can serve as a foundation for new aggregation operators and decision-making problems and can be extended to many new applications such as pattern recognition and clustering. © The Author(s) 2024

Psychosocial dimensions of being a child in women's shelters: A phenomenological study on the experiences of battered women - A case study from Türkiye's Northern Region

    No full text
Background: Violence against women has numerous devastating effects. Exposure to violence not only impacts women but also affects their children both physically and psychosocially. Aims: The study aimed to evaluate the psychosocial problems of children living with their mothers in women's shelters from the mothers' perspective with a phenomenological approach. Methods: Utilizing the phenomenological research method, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 14 individuals in a women's shelter in a province in northern Türkiye. The criterion sampling method, a purposive sampling technique, was employed to select participants. Interviews continued until data saturation was achieved. All interviews were audio recorded and then transcribed, and thematic analysis was applied to analyze the data. The study adhered to the COREQ checklist for reporting. Results: The data analysis revealed four main categories (effects of violence on the mother, actions taken to protect children from violence, effects of violence and staying in a shelter on the child, and psychosocial needs for the protection of the child's mental health in the shelter) and 10 sub-themes (psychological effects, physical effects, social effects, domestic actions, organizational actions, psychological effects, physical effects, social effects, support system, and coping). Conclusion: The study concluded that violence significantly impacted the mental, physical, and social well-being of both women and children, posing challenges to their ability to cope with the aftermath. Women exerted considerable effort in protecting their children from violence, and they needed psychosocial support to ensure the well-being of their children's mental health during their stay in shelters.3861650

Economic impact of local geographical indication products on farmers: a case of Kelkit sugar (dry) beans

    No full text
This study aims to present the economic impact of the production of local Geographical Indication (GI) products on producers based on the example of GI Kelkit sugar (dry) beans. Kelkit sugar beans, which are cultivated using local seeds, are legume products with white seeds and pink spots. Sugar beans grown around the Kelkit district of Gümüşhane were registered as a geographical indication product by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TPO) in 2020. This study seeks to answer the question of how the production of Kelkit sugar beans, which are mainly marketed with a geographical indication label, affects producer welfare. The target group of the research consists of farmers living in the Kelkit, Siran, and Kose districts of Gümüşhane who use GI-labelled seeds and do not use GI-labelled seeds in beans production. Propensity Score Matching was employed to determine the economic impact of the production of local geographical indication products on producers. The results indicate that the agricultural enterprises participating in the Kelkit sugar beans production program using geographical indication seeds have lower gross output and gross profit per unit area than those who did not participate in the program. © 2024 The Author(s). Corrosion and adhesion properties of MAO-coated LA91 magnesium alloy

    No full text
Magnesium–lithium alloy is used in different areas of industry and is known as a super light metallic engineering material. However, the use of these alloys is limited due to their surface properties under extreme loads and aggressive environments. Surface treatments can be applied to these alloys to increase their usage areas and improve their weak surface properties. In this study, the micro-arc oxidation method was applied to improve the surface properties of LA91 alloy. The corrosion and adhesion behaviour of the coated samples were investigated. The lowest corrosion current density in the coatings was obtained under Experiment 3. Experiment 3 has the highest Lc2 value due to the coating thickness and the denser and smaller diameter pores of the functional intermediate layer. © The Author(s) 2024

Analysis of open channel flow with various layered vegetation using CFD, considering different near-wall treatment methods

    No full text
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of near-wall treatment approaches, which are crucial parameters in predicting the flow characteristics of open channels, and the influence of different vegetation covers in different layers. Design/methodology/approach: Ansys Fluent, a computational fluid dynamics software, was used to calculate the flow and turbulence characteristics using a three-dimensional, turbulent (k-e realizable), incompressible and steady-flow assumption, along with various near-wall treatment approaches (standard, scalable, non-equilibrium and enhanced) in the vegetated channel. The numerical study was validated concerning an experimental study conducted in the existing literature. Findings: The numerical model successfully predicted experimental results with relative error rates below 10%. It was determined that nonequilibrium wall functions exhibited the highest predictive success in experiment Run 1, standard wall functions in experiment Run 2 and enhanced wall treatments in experiment Run 3. This study has found that plant growth significantly alters open channel flow. In the contact zones, the velocities and the eddy viscosity are low, while in the free zones they are high. On the other hand, the turbulence kinetic energy and turbulence eddy dissipation are maximum at the solid–liquid interface, while they are minimum at free zones. Originality/value: This is the first study, to the best of the author’s knowledge, concerning the performance of different near-wall treatment approaches on the prediction of vegetation-covered open channel flow characteristics. And this study provides valuable insights to improve the hydraulic performance of open-channel systems. © 2024, Emerald Publishing Limited

Dual Capacitive Behavior of Hollow Porous Gold Nanoparticle/Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Composite Films as Anode and Cathode Electrode Materials for Supercapacitors

    No full text
In this paper, composites of multi-walled carbon nanotubes decorated with hollow porous gold nanoparticles (HPAuNPs/MWCNTs) were prepared using wet chemistry methods, and their capacitive properties were evaluated in Na2SO4 aqueous solution on glassy carbon (GC) electrodes as both cathode and anode materials by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge–discharge (GCD), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. Also, the MWCNTs were studied under similar experimental conditions for comparison. The results revealed that the charge storage mechanisms of the MWCNTs/GC and HPAuNPs/MWCNTs/GC electrodes were electrostatic in the negative potential window, whereas they exhibited pseudocapacitive energy storage behavior in the positive potential region. Moreover, the HPAuNPs/MWCNTs/GC electrode yielded specific capacitance values of 57 and 49 F g−1 at a scan rate of 20 mV s−1 in the cathodic and anodic potential windows, respectively, which were higher than those of the MWCNTs/GC electrode (~9 F g−1).
