TRADE: Transformations of Adriatic Europe (2nd–9th Centuries AD)

    No full text
Spanning the period between the 2nd and 9th centuries, this volume collects 45 papers dealing with the Adriatic area that aim to create a new dataset for the historical reconstruction of processes related to forms of settlement, aspects of production, and trade and the movement of pottery and other craft products between its two coasts. TRADE: Transformations of Adriatic Europe presents the proceedings of a 2016 conference held in Zadar (Croatia) which analysed the transformative phenomena of Late Antiquity in an area where research has been comparatively scarce and results less widely known. The contributions span the period between the 2nd and 9th centuries, that is from roughly the establishment of the Severan dynasty to the end of the Carolingian period. The volume collects 45 papers dealing with the Adriatic area that aim to create a new dataset for the historical reconstruction of processes related to forms of settlement, aspects of production, and trade and the movement of pottery and other craft products between its two coasts, here examined either through regional synthesis or the presentation of individual study contexts

The paper presents the results of the first archaeological excavations conducted in the south-eastern suburb of ancient Pharos, the present-day town of Stari Grad on the island of Hvar, within the framework of the CSF AdriaCos project (in 2021), that brought to light new data on topography, stratigraphy, and artefacts that helps understand the organization of the extramural space bordering with the Stari Grad Plain. The structures from two phases, uncovered in one of the trenches (10A-W) and associated with the Greek and late antiquity periods, and the discovery of a Greek grave, provide insight into the changes in the use of this extra-urban space, while artefacts are indicative of the culinary habits and trade contacts within each of the represented periods

The paper provides new information about the site of Gradina (Vinogradišće), located circa 1 km north from the town of Vis, as a contribution to the archaeological map of the island of Vis. In the centre of the site is a segment of monumental architecture built of massive half-finished stone blocks, preserved up to two rows, which had not been recorded before. The results of a short and intensive field survey revealed a number of surface finds, mostly from the Hellenistic period. The same chronological range is predominantly indicated by the finds from the test trench, which certainly point to the existence of a site from the Hellenistic period, completing the picture of the stratification and organization of the extramural space of ancient Isa

The paper presents the publication of a Greek loom weight that was discovered during the excavations conducted in Stari Grad on the island of Hvar in 2021. It is a discoid loom weight that contains two types of markings: a Greek graffito with the first mention of the Greek name ΚΑΣΙ[…] in Dalmatia and an elliptical impression with an indeterminable representation. The typological/chronological determinants of the loom weight, the analysis of the inscription, and the role of loom weights in the context of Greek influence in the area of central Dalmatia are reviewed

A brief note on an amphora with an inscription from Osijek

Rescue excavations in the location of the future Faculty of Law in the former Barracks area of the Lower Town in Osijek revealed numerous features from antiquity with portable finds, even though the archaeological layers were partially devastated in places due to recent interventions. The excavated features include pits, post holes, canals, wells, and furnaces. The fill layer of the canal SU 80/81 contained various Roman finds made of pottery, brick, bone, glass, and bronze, with numerous animal bones. On the basis of the finds, the canal has been preliminarily dated to the period between the end of the 1st and the beginning of the 2nd century AD. A find that stands out is a fragment of a small amphora with an incised inscription. The upper part of the vessel has been preserved: the neck with the handles and the upper part of the body where there are incised letters. Incised (graffito) inscriptions have been documented on other amphora finds from southern Pannonia. The content of the inscriptions refers to the numerical indications of the weight or capacity of the vessel, to the content of the vessel, or to personal names. This last category can be associated with the Osijek example found in the fill layers of the canal

Mlađeželjeznodobne kovanice đurđevačke tradicije s Kuzelina (jugozapadna Panonija)

The Late Iron Age hillfort site of Kuzelin on Medvednica in south-western Pannonia has yielded a not negligible number of coins, most of which can be classified among the types that are traditionally labelled “Tauriscan”. A single coin can be categorized as an east Celtic type from Transdanubia, while two further coins were struck by pairs of dies that also occur in the Samobor–Okić hoard and were thus produced simultaneously with the bulk of the hoard, whereas the remainder can be classified as recently recognized group of coins produced in the Đurđevac (Gjurgjevac) tradition. The latter represent the debased and reduced in weight and size coins inspired by the tetradrachms deposited as the Đurđevac hoard. They were issued at various sites in south-western Pannonia, testifying to different phases of striking and local developments in their production. Two subtypes of such coins were recognized in the numismatic record of Kuzelin and are here separated out as Kuzelin A and B types. The date of these coins corresponds to the archaeological material excavated at the site, i.e., to the Lt D1 period, ca. 150/130−70/50 BC.Na mlađeželjeznodobnom visinskom utvrđenom lokalitetu Kuzelin na Medvednici (jugozapadna Panonija) pronađen je nezanemarivi broj kovanica, većina kojih se može klasificirati, u tradicionalnim terminima, kao tauriščanski tipovi. – 70./50. g. pr. Kr

Design and technological features of early medieval ceramic ware using the example of the researched micro-complex Torčec in Podravina

    No full text
The features of early medieval pottery obtained in the systematic archaeological excavations that were carried out in the period from 2002 to 2008 in the vicinity of the present-day village of Torčec in Podravina (Koprivnica-Križevci County). After many years of intensive archaeological reconnaissance and reambulation of the surroundings of Torčec, several locations were selected for detailed research (Prečno pole I, Blaževo pole 6, Ledine, Pod Gucak, Rudičevo). These locations indicated a continuity of settlement in this area from the turn of the 6th and the beginning of the 7th century to the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th century. The research revealed remains of residential buildings, hearths and ovens, as well as waste pits, but also parts of open settlements of the scattered type located along the old courses of the Drava River and its meanders. Noticeable changes, which had occurred during the centuries-long habitation of this micro-complex in the Middle Ages, could be identified, particularly in terms of the shapes of the ground-plan of residential buildings, but also in the design and technological features of ceramic ware, which, based on a detailed analysis, were classified into five groups of pottery (1-5). Of the functional forms, the kitchen pot is the most frequently represented one in the entire period under review, which in certain groups shows identical or similar features in terms of the design of the rim and body, the motifs of decoration and the method of production. Based on other findings from the investigated structures and also analogies from the wider surroundings, the differences between the defined ceramic groups were additionally supported by radiocarbon analyses and hence divided into five phases (Torčec phases I-V). In addition to pots, other functional forms had also been used in different time periods, from baking pans in the earliest period to bottles, jugs and plates in the most recent period observed here. Life in the wider area of Torčec had continued throughout the late medieval period and early modern period, as indicated by the archaeological remains that were discovered at sites with fortification and sacred features, i.e. at locations with indicative toponyms such as Gradić (late medieval hillfort) and Cirkvišče (church with cemetery)
