The paper presents a Late Roman strap end with a rider from Tonovcov grad above Kobarid in western Slovenia and comparable belt sets with rectangular buckle plates and strap ends from the southeastern Alps and Pannonia. The author discusses the decorative motif of the rider or Bellerophon and Chimera which appears on belts sets and links it to the representation of victory over the enemy and the equipment of high military representatives on the Pannonian limes and its hinterground in the critical time of the late 4th and early 5th century.

    Atiliji u Aseriji

This paper studies the distribution of the Atilii family on the territory of Asseria. The discussion is based on a newly discovered inscription from Asseria, first published in this paper. It is a sepulchral monument dedicated to Sextus Atilius Rufus, associated with Sextus Atilius, a veteran of the Seventh Roman Legion, mentioned on an Iader inscription from the first half of the first century AD. By associating the two inscriptions we obtain relevant information on the expansion of the Atilii family from Iader into Asserian territory, confirming the existence of the family in Asseria’s social structure. The most prominent person from the family was Publius Atilius Aebutianus, to whom the citizens of Asseria erected a monument. Therefore, in this paper his origins are directly associated with the analysed territory. As he also achieved the highest equestrian rank as a praetorian prefect, the economic rise of the Atilii family and its development in the 1st and 2nd centuries are studied.U ovom radu proučava se rasprostranjenost porodice Atilija na aserijatskom teritoriju.

Archaeological excavations carried out so far at the Stari Grad site in Ivanec have revealed 270 graves. The first graves at the site can be dated back to the end of the 11th or the beginning of the 12th centuries, and the last to the beginning of the 17th century. Based on stratigraphic relationships, the graves covered in this article can be dated back to the second half of the 13th or the beginning of the 14th centuries; they differ from others in that the deceased buried in them displayed perimortem traumas and had been buried with knives at their side. So far, grave 202 is the only grave found at the site which was covered by a gravestone. The perimortal traumas found on the skeletons from these graves are responsible for the death of the individuals analysed. Based on their characteristics, these traumas can be classified as cut wounds resulting from intentional violence between individuals

Villa rustica u uvali Dobrika (Madona) na otočju Brijuni

The Roman villa rustica in Dobrika Bay (part of Madona Bay) on the Brijuni Islands was built on the slopes of the Histrian hill fort on Petrovac Hill. The first villa rustica, modest in size and with a simple ground-plan, was built in the 2nd century BC. In the middle of the 1st century BC, another villa rustica was built over it, its size being 63 x 51 m, although traces of the first villa remained in its substructures. In the 1st and 2nd centuries, a tower was added to the structure on its south-eastern side, and a dwelling structure for workers on the north-eastern side. At the beginning of the 3rd century, new production workshops were built for olive processing. Around the villa, a late antiquity settlement was erected. On the north-western side of the villa rustica, a structure with lesenes was added. After 452 AD, the entire region was fortified with irregular quadrangular structures, which during the period of Byzantine domination (6th century) were fortified and adapted so as to meet the construction standards imposed by the state. At the time of Justinian’s Reconquista, the late antiquity settlement was reduced to a church and military centre. At that time, new olive presses were established in the villa’s courtyard, which can be dated from the incorporation of an epistyle from St. Mary’s Church in the press stand. During the Byzantine renovation of St. Mary’s Church and the possible desecration that followed the Arian period and the domination of the Ostrogoths, many elements from the initial phase of St. Mary’s Church were built into the Byzantine fortress, which was erected in the area of the former late antiquity settlement. The supremacy of the Franks after 822 is represented by numerous structures in the settlement, as well as by alterations to the interiors of the churches of St. Mary and St. Peter. As an important naval base on the Adriatic sea-lane, the settlement was exposed to frequent plague outbreaks in the Middle Ages and deserted in the 15th/16th century. The settlement moved to the eastern part of the island. A new settlement was also constructed in the Brijuni port area, around a 12th-century defence tower (donjon) and St. Germano’s Church. Prva villa rustica skromnih dimenzija i jednostavnog tlocrta sagrađena je u 2. st. pr. Kr. Tijekom bizantske renovacije prostora crkve sv. Marije i sv. Petra.

The author attempts to formulate a new problem–the appearance and significance of incineration in the Liburnian society–observed in 2004 and 2007, when the first cremation burials in the Early Iron Age funerary contexts of the Liburnians were discovered: in mound 13 in Nadin near Benkovac, with three burial urns, and in the Jokina Glavica-Krneza mound with four as yet unpublished urn burials (10th/9th cent. BC). The problem can be approached in the frame of cultural dynamics in the Adriatic and its wider hinterland (including the Urnfield world) at the end of the Bronze Age and the beginning of the Iron Age. The latest 14C results of the bones of the cremated persons from mound 13 in Nadin and from the Jokina Glavica-Krneza mound are considered

The introduction deals with amber as a natural phenomenon, antique trade routes, the symbolic and healing properties of the precious resin and the methods of its processing, in particular in Aquileia. When compared to Aquileian amber jewellery, by its size, colour and significance, the amber ring bearing the representation of an animal (lion) and a young man (Heracles) from the Roman necropolis of Burle in Medulin (1st – 2nd century), is iconographically unique.U uvodnom dijelu navode se fenomeni ambre u prirodi, trgovački pravci kretanja u antici, simbolika i zdravstvena svojstva skupocjene smole, te načini obrade, posebno u Akvileji.

O nekim oblicima fibula s kasnolatenskog naselja Virovitica – Kiškorija sjever

The excavations at the settlement in Virovitica revealed fibulae which, along with many ceramic forms, allow us to place the settlement in the Late La Tène period. Similarities with the ceramic finds from contemporaneous settlements in the Slovenian part of Podravina and Prekmurje are particularly numerous. Fibula cast in lead bronze belongs to the female attire of the Late La Tène period, and different variants of similarly cast fibulae have been found at the sites of the La Tène Culture in Central Europe. The bronze fibulae of the Beletov vrt type, found in the fillings of pit-dwellings in the north-eastern part of the settlement, are considered to be one of the characteristic Late La Tène forms of the Mokronog Group. In view of the typological characteristics and distribution, it can be presumed that the fibulae originated from workshops located in the area of Podravina.U istraživanjima naselja u Virovitici pronađene su fibule na osnovi kojih se, uz brojne keramičke oblike, naselje može pripisati razdoblju kasnog latena.
