In October 2014, field surveys were conducted in the city of Rab area (Island of Rab, Croatia) on several sites and locations that had not been previously documented in literature. Several known sites were also surveyed, especially in the town centre to gain insight into the current state. The research is part of the Archaeaological Topography of the Island of Rab project, executed by the Institute of Archaeology and the Conservation Department in Rijeka, financed by the Ministry of Culture and City of Rab. All sites and locations with finds in situ were documented and referenced by GPS devices, and all data was registered in GIS system. The second phase of the database was also launched in 2014, which will, along with the spatial data, comprise a system for future analysis and presentations of collected data. Research results suggest several sites with walled structures and mobile finds that were previously unknown. For one of these sites (e.g. Za markovićem, Mirine, Valmartina, and also Mundanije-Koplaca) we can assume rural-economic features and date it back to the Antiquity/Late Antiquity. Interestingly, the sites in question can be found both on the island coast (Barbat), as well as inland (Mundanijsko polje), on favourable natural terrain with possible road infrastructure. For later periods, there are several smaller church sites that sometimes appear either on or immediately next to the ancient sites. Thanks to the Culture Centre and Municipality of Lopar, Institute of Archaeology and associates, exhibition Archaeological topography: a journey through the history of Lopar was opened in April 2014 to present the current finds regarding the archaeological heritage of the Lopar peninsula and to raise public awareness of this segment of cultural richness in Lopar

The Marić Hillfort Settlement near Mikleuška during the Late Bronze and the Early Iron Age

The Moslavina region, situated in the south-western part of continental Croatia, occupies a transitional geographical position connecting the north-western parts of the country with Slavonia and Posavina regions. To this day it remains an insufficiently researched area with only a few known sites that can be attributed to the periods of the Late Bronze and the Early Iron Age. The research and pottery analysis have shown that the settlement on Marić hillfort near Kutina lived most intensely during the later phases of the Urnfield Culture and during the transitional period to the Early Iron Age. Questions regarding earlier setllement stages still remain open. Cutural influences that can be traced during the Late Urnfield Culture link the settlement on the hillfort with contemporary sites in the Podravina and Posavina regions. Some of the finds point out to local distinctions that are not only specific to Moslavina region, but to the area of north-western Croatia, as well. A small number of finds indicates that life on the hillfort continued into the Early Iron Age, but conclusions about a more complete picture of this period cannot be made

Municipium Flavium Fulfinum Diachronic study of the city structure with a special attention to the forum

The present paper aims to gather all the available archaeological data produced during numerous campaigns of excavations conducted between 1972 and 1983, mostly through test trenching, but sometimes also by larger research excavations. The results of these archaeological works have rarely been published, and the majority of them have remained unknown to the larger public. This first complete publication on the known urban structure of Flavium Fulfinum, the second roman municipium on the island of Krk (Croatia), is enriched by the results of the new archaeological excavations conducted on the Forum since 2006. Special attention is given to questions relating to the datation of the city’s creation, its development, and finally its fate through Late Antiquity up to the time of its final abandonment. The study of the structures in the Forum should offer new insights concerning this urban public space, but should also enrich our knowledge of its evolution between Antiquity and Late Antiquity, both of which are extremely poorly documented for the area of northern Liburnia (Dalmatia)

Lithic Artifacts from Nakovana (Pelješac): Continuity and Change from Early Neolithic until the End of Prehistory

Rad donosi rezultate materijalnih, tipoloških i tehnoloških analiza velike i složene zbirke kamenih izrađevina s poluotoka Pelješca u južnoj Dalmaciji. Većina građe potječe s dva višeslojna nalazišta, nakovanske Spile i gradine Grada te pokriva vremenski raspon od ranog neolitika do željeznog doba. Postoji izraziti kontinuitet u odabiru sirovina i proizvodnoj tehnologiji. Njezina važnost opada s porastom važnosti tehnologije prizmolikih sječiva, no nakon nestanka prizmolikih sječiva, brončanodobni skupovi litičkih nalaza sadrže gotovo isključivo proizvode tehnologije odbojaka. This paper presents results of raw material, typological, and technological analyses of a large and complex lithic collection from Pelješac Peninsula in southern Dalmatia. Most of the evidence comes from two stratified sites, a cave named Spila and the hillfort of Grad that cover the time span from the Early Neolithic until the Iron Age. There is a pronounced continuity in the choice of raw material and in production technology. Virtually all lithics are made of cherts that were imported from Gargano Peninsula. Changes are manifest in frequencies of lithic artifact classes, rather than in kinds of lithic artifacts. Prismatic blades were brought to Nakovana as finished products. They are present since the Early Neolithic, gradually they become more common, their frequencies culminate during the Copper Age, and they disappear from the record after the Copper Age to Early Bronze Age transition. A simple flake tool production technology is present throughout the sequence. Its importance diminishes as the prismatic blade technology takes over, but after the disappearance of prismatic blades, Bronze Age lithic assemblages contain almost nothing else but products of flake technology

Systematic research of Crikvenica – Ad turres site: analysis of finds in 2014 and the 845°C Ad Turres exhibition (Museum of Crikvenica)

Zahvaljujući prenamjeni sredstava, a zbog nemogućnosti ispumpavanja vode i sušenja terena, tijekom kampanje 2014. godine provedena je primarna i sekundarna obrada nalaza. Ninth season of archaeological research on the Crikvenica-Ad turres site has, once again, been riddled with problems which hindered field work, this time due to heavy rain flooding the site and most of the surrounding area. Thankfully, the resources granted by the Ministry of Culture were reallocated to finance primary analysis of previous research, which included washing, initial sorting of the finds and database entry. Exhibition 845°C Ad Turres was organized in collaboration with the Museum of Crikvenica in 2014 to encourage the popularization of science by presenting results of the research conducted so far. Apart from the team of experts from the Institute of Archaeology and Museum's employees, many experts and collaborators participated in the exhibition which focused on guiding the visitors through the earliest history of the Crikvenica and Vinodol area. Some of the material was on loan from the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb, Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Coast in Rijeka and private collections

Virovitica Kiškorija South during the early Middle ages

The early medieval population formed their settlement at the location of Virovitica Kiškorija south, on the foundations of an older ancient rural settlement, which existed in the period from the end of the 8th to the end of the 10th century. It was a typical rural open settlement of a scattered type that preferred slightly elevated hillsides in an environment rich in watercourses and fertile soil. In addition to several residential semi-buried features around which features were grouped, probably for economic or other purposes of rural households, ovens were also found, which together gives us a picture of the infrastructure of this early medieval settlement. Especially in the older horizon of the settlement, one can recognize the orientation of the population towards agriculture and soil cultivation. This is supported by the findings of fragments of stone millstones and an iron hoe. Archaeobotanical remains of cereals were found in various features, mostly in the older horizon, and the largest number of them comes from oven SJ 1062, which could perhaps be interpreted as a bread oven on this basis. In the younger horizon, the population was probably still largely oriented towards agricultural food production, and the breeding of domestic animals was certainly a source of nutrition (meat, milk and dairy products), although zooarchaeological findings from archaeological research are few and it is not possible to draw more certain conclusions

Geophysical survey of ancient structures in Mahućina Bay on the Island of Rab (Lopar municipality), 2014 (HRZZ , Croatian Science Foundation, Project RED)

Tijekom prosinca 2014. godine u uvali Mahućina (općina Lopar, otok Rab) provedena su geofizička snimanja metodom magnetometrije s ciljem definiranja, rasprostiranja i točnijeg ubiciranja antičkih radioničkih struktura (keramičarskih peći) koje su pretpostavljene tijekom terenskih pregleda i analize šireg područja uvale. Snimanja su provedena u suradnji s dr. sc. B. Mušičem u sklopu projekta RED Hrvatske zaklade za znanost.Geophysical survey conducted in Mahućina bay as part of the RED Project (Roman Economy in Dalmatia: production, distribution and demand in the light of pottery workshops, IP-11-2013-3979) of the Croatian Science Foundation focused on a more precise identification, definition and interpretation of potential structures of pottery furnaces identified during field surveys, aerial screening and analysis of historical sources. Magnetometric imagery yielded interesting results and confirmed the concentration of workshop finds in the south part of the bay, while drywalls were found on the north side of the bay, without any indication of ancient walls, unless they had been used for recent plot division. Seven zones were captured with stronger magnetization, that is, bipolar, which would point toward either production structures or an extremely high concentration of waste material. These results should definitely be verified on the field, but, to a certain degree, they support the previous hypothesis established after field surveys, with addition of possible newly identified structures

Virovitica Kiškorija South site was a Roman village. In this paper archaeological, archaeobotanical and archaeozoological finds are presented and interpreted, comparing them with similar sites and the information available from ancient sources. The site was divided in complexes that made a whole. The finds within respective complexes are presented and compared with similar archaeological sites as well as the data from ancient written sources. The goal of the paper was to find out what kind of diet was present in the Roman village in Pannonia and to analyse the differences and similarities between this village and analogue sites

Archaeologists of the Varaždin Municipal Museum and the Institute of Archaeology in Zagreb carried out a repeated survey of the area around the large tumulus in Jalžabet. These surveys helped us determine the probable position of the Early Iron Age settlement, upon which new aerial photographs of the site were made with the aid of an unmanned aerial vehicle. The paper presents a number of old, previously unpublished information, as an introduction into the resumption of systematic archaeological investigations.
