Barbotinska dekoracija na keramici tankih stijenki s istraživanja u Mursi (Vojarna 2008. – 2013.)
In 2012 and 2013, statistical analysis and expert processing was carried out on ceramic material from Mursa. This material came from rescue archaeological excavations which were conducted on the site of the former Drava Barracks, the present day University Campus, in the period 2008–2013. An early Roman horizon from the 1st and 2nd cent. AD was documented on all of the sites relating to the time before the establishment of the colony, which is also evidenced by the findings of thin-walled pottery. This paper deals with the decorative techniques that appear on this type of pottery, and is especially focused on the findings featuring the barbotine technique. This type of decoration is represented in most of the production centres and it is one of the oldest and most widespread ways of decorating. The decorative motifs performed in this technique are different types of stylized and floral motifs, spines, pseudo-vegetable waves, etc. The origin of a part of the findings from Mursa can be linked to the Northern Italic production centres. Also represented are the findings which, most likely, belong to the Pannonian production centre located in Sirmium.
Roman Provincial Theatres. A Review.
Do sada je, međutim, malo pozornosti poklonjeno provincijama Dalmaciji, Meziji, Noriku i Panoniji, posebno u pogledu rasprostranjenosti kazališta i njihovoj povijesti tijekom antičkog razdoblja. According to the Roman architect Vitruvius (De architectura 5, 3, 1), building a theatre is one of the first priorities: “When the forum is placed, a spot as healthy as possible is to be chosen for the theatre, for the exhibition of games on the festival days of the immortal gods…” Remains, that is, evidence of ancient theatres can be found throughout the Roman Empire, or rather indications of theatres, on the basis of architectonic relics or references to performances found on inscriptions. However, only very little attention has so far been paid to the provinces of Dalmatia, Moesia, Noricum and Pannonia, especially with regard to the spread of theatres and their ancient history. It is precisely in these four provinces, where quite different cultures meet, that we can see Greek, Roman/Italic and Gallic influences. Furthermore, these provinces show quite exceptional legacies, which cannot be found in the rest of the Roman Empire
In this paper we present the results of the analysis of lithic industry from Vlakno Cave, which was discovered during excavations in 2004 and 2007. Radiocarbon dating positions the analysed lithic industry at the time of Pleistocene-Holocene transition. The technological and typological features of the lithic production show continuity during the abovementioned transition. Very clear continuity may also be observed in terms of the procurement of raw material, albeit with certain differences between the Late Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic, which could be the result of environmental changes. Certain adaptations of the hunter-gatherers from Vlakno to new environmental circumstances can also be traced through the more significant role of marine food sources and continental malacofauna in subsistence strategies during the Mesolithic. Vlakno cave was used as a residential base of a smaller group of hunter-gatherers at the time of the Pleistocene-Holocene transition.U ovom radu predstavljamo rezultate analize litičke industrije iz pećine Vlakno otkrivene u iskopavanjima 2004. i 2007. godine. Radiokarbonski datumi smještaju analiziranu litičku industriju u vrijeme prijelaza iz pleistocena u holocen. Tehnološka i tipološka obilježja litičke industrije pokazuju kontinuitet tijekom navedenog prijelaza.
Egypt during the Roman and Byzantine period until the Arab conquest (30 BC – AD 645)
Autor u članku obrađuje rimsku i bizantsku vlast u Egiptu od 30. godine pr. Kr. do 645. In this article the author reviews the Roman and Byzantine rule of Egypt from 30 BC to AD 645. Apart from rare reviews, this subject was until now completely neglected in Croatian historiography. Based on the relevant sources and literature the author discusses the most important political, social and cultural aspects of the history of Egypt until the final Arab conquest in AD 645
The “Archaeological Topography of the Island of Rab“ Project: the results of the 2013 field survey of the Lopar Peninsula
The first campaign of field surveys in the framework of the “Archaeological Topography of the Island of Rab“ Project (carried out by the Institute of Archaeology in collaboration with the Conservation Department of the Ministry of Culture in Rijeka) was carried out in October 2013 and focused on the territory of the Lopar Municipality. The team surveyed the sites known from the literature and from previous research, but also those pointed out by informants. All the sites were mapped, that is, their GPS coordinates were taken. In addition to sites, the positions of chance finds were documented, too, as well as individual recognizable structures observed on the sites. Alongside the mapping of immovable finds, movable finds and samples were collected. The surveyed sites cover all the historical periods, and the collected data will be stored in the relational database (under construction) and implemented in the GIS software.
The results of this campaign of field surveys include the identification of 22 new sites, as well as a survey of the state of preservation of previously known sites and a detailed recording of layouts of two sites. Due to pronounced water erosion, present on almost the entire Lopar Peninsula, the layers and finds at most sites are being worn away. In addition to this, it has been observed that certain sites are exposed to another threat, i.e. destruction by visitors. However, more substantial results and interpretations will be possible only once the GIS system and database have been made fully operational

Ranobrončanodobni grobni nalaz iz Dobrudže (jugoistočna Rumunjska) Tumul iz Rahmana (opć. Casimcea, okrug Tulcea)
Late La Tène and Early Imperial Fibulae from the Iapodian Territory
The unpublished fibulae from the Iapodian Collection of the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb come from several sites, mostly situated in the Lika region. The paper presents fibulae from the 2nd and 1st cent. BC. Although the information about the context of most finds is lacking, a few finds of previously unknown or rare types allow us to complement the distribution maps. Fibulae are used as markers of the network of regional contacts that shaped the material culture of Iapodian communities in the decades preceding the Roman conquest. In the same vein, early imperial Aucissa fibulae prove that the life continued even after the establishment of Roman authority
Ceramic finds from grave 5 in Ilok
In 2006 a partially destroyed early Roman grave was excavated on the site of Ilok – Dvor knezova iločkih. Alongside weaponry and other small metal, glass and bone finds, it contained a large amount of various pottery finds. Especially significant are two cups of thin-walled pottery and an olive oil amphora of type Dressel 6B with stamp of Laecanius Bassus. The same assemblage includes other pottery categories, such as grey polished ware, coarse ware pots, red fired tableware and lamps. On this occasion we will show the different types of ware and their typology. Imported ceramic vessels, important for dating, were found together with pieces of probable local origin. Together they illustrate the acceptance of new customs, but also the preserving of prehistoric traditions in the pottery production, showing thus the complexity of the process of Romanisation of local inhabitants
