Pokrovnik – An Example of an Enclosed Neolithic Settlement
The paper presents results of the excavations conducted from 2010 to 2011, and in 2013, in Pokrovnik near Drniš, the Neolithic site with phases of the Impressed Ware and Danilo cultures. The site had already been excavated by two other researchers: Z. Brusić in 1979 and A. M. T. Moore in 2006. In addition to presentation of stratigraphic relations and general culturological image, special attention is paid to recovery of massive stone structures whose existence was not only attested in the archaeological excavations but it was also confirmed by geophysical surveys in the entire area of the site. Massiveness and number of these structures indicate to presence of a complex enclosure system of the settlement with identical stone structures
On Burial Practices in the Southern Carpathian Basin in the 11th Century BC (Case Study: Cemetery in Slatina)
Vrijeme 11. st. pr. Kr. Istraženih 38 grobova nudi mogućnost rekonstrukcije pogrebnih običaja u središnjem dijelu Podravine, a geografski položaj Slatine omogućuje povezivanje dokumentiranih pogrebnih običaja sa širom komunikacijskom mrežom istovremenih istraženih groblja na širem prostoru južnog dijela Karpatske kotline. The 11th cent. BC in the southern Carpathian Basin was marked by the Urnfield culture. The typological and chronological analysis of the ceramic and metal finds collected in the Late Bronze Age cemetery in Slatina, excavated in 2009, date the cemetery to the Ha A2 phase according to the periodization of H. Müller-Karpe. Absolute radiocarbon dating from the Slatina graves suggests the period of the 11th cent. BC. The analyzed 38 graves give the opportunity to reconstruct the burial practices on the central Drava, while the geographic location of Slatina makes it possible to relate the observed burial practices with the wider communication network of the researched contemporary cemeteries in the wider area of the southern Carpathian Basin
Results of the Archaeological topography of the Island of Rab project in 2015: field surveys, processing of archaeological finds, popularization of science
As part of the Archaeological topography of the Island of Rab project, field surveys were carried out in October 2015 in the territory of the City of Rab municipality. The research is carried out in collaboration with the Conservation Department in Rijeka, financed by the Ministry of Culture and the City of Rab.
The recorded sites and positions were georeferenced, photographs were taken on site and data was recorded in previously designed forms. All data will be entered into the GIS designed specifically for the project. The sites included in the survey relate to all time periods, with significantly numerous sacral and medieval ones. Apart from those already mentioned in the literature, the research located a previously unknown prehistoric site. The results of the underwater survey in Barbatski Channel are ex¬tremely relevant because they confirmed underwater docking structures in front of Mirine site, previously identified during the project's seurveys. In collaboration with the company Novena, aerial footage of chosen sites was taken, and thanks to the data gathered while preparing the catalogue of the archaeological collection of the St. Bernardino of Siena Monastery in Kampor, the project also participated at the Night of Museums manifestation
Graves from the Certosa Phase in Early Iron Age Barrow 48 at Stična
In his study on the Hallstatt barrows from Stična published in the monograph Stična II/2 (Ljubljana 2010), Stane Gabrovec presented in Figure 21 a table and in Figure 23 a ground plan with typical graves from four chronological phases in barrow 48. He assigned only twelve graves, all but one female, to the fourth phase, which should correspond to the Certosa phase of the Dolenjska group of the Hallstatt culture. Four of these, however, are in reality earlier. On the other hand, at least twenty-eight other Certosa phase graves from barrow 48, both female and male, should be added to the eight correctly dated graves from the fourth phase. Some of them are very rich, and have high potential for a new typological and chronological analysis of this phase
Rezultati terenskih pregleda na području podvelebitskog Primorja i neposrednog zaleđa
The first field survey season carried out in October 2015 by the Institute of Archaeology in collaboration with the Conservation Department in Gospić in the territory of the City of Senj and local boards of Sv. Juraj, Krivi Put, Krasno polje, Vratnik and Starigrad senjski settlement, was aimed to revise, pinpoint, document (preliminary) and georeference archaeological sites dating to all periods. Documentation methodology for the sites and positions included registration of the GPS coordinates, recording of main features of locations and finds using appropriate forms, photodocumentation and collection of representative small finds. Data collected in this way will be entered into the GIS with a relational database, which will help with further analysis.
Out of 10 sites and 8 positions traced during the revision, six can be attributed to prehistory, with two Antique and Medieval sites, respectively. Most of the prehistoric sites are hillforts, most notably LOK 9 - Starigrad senjski (south slopes). LOK 10 - Vratnik is particularly interesting for the Antique period where a large quantity of pottery and glass finds from the Antique/Late Antique period was found west of St. Michael's (Sv. Mihovil) church.U sklopu “Programa kulturnog razvitka 2015. g.”
Roman pottery production complex in Crikvenica – conclusive research in 2015
The research at the "Igralište" site in Crikvenica (within the Ad Turres Roman settlement) carried out from 2006 to 2015 has resulted in extremely valuable scientific data about the regional pottery production complex of Sextus Metilius Maximus. The research into the surrounding landscape, which was an integral part of our project, pointed out that the choice of location for establishing a workshop was important because of the quantity and availability of natural resources (clay, wood, water), a nearby communication network, both on land and sea, vicinity of urban centres and good climate.
This year, the research was carried out within the RED project of the Croatian Science Foundation (IP-11-2013-3973), and three phases of spatial organization were defined for the so-called northern production sector. For the first and earliest phase, a sequence of rooms partitioned by walls whose lower layers were built of tegulas was uncovered. Different types of flooring suggest differences in the usage of these rooms. During the next two phases, the initial layout of the workshop had been considerably expanded destroying some of the boundary walls from the previous phase. A tendency to unify smaller separate spatial units within a purposefully organized space is noticeable. Numerous upgrades, adaptations and leveling of the floors point out the need for reorganization of the workshop and adaptation to increasing demand which can be traced back from the mid-1st century to the early 2nd century, when the peak of production at Crikvenica's pottery complex had been reached
Project Late Mousterian in the eastern Adriatic – towards understanding of late Neanderthals’ identity and Their Demise: Summary of the 2nd and 3rd years of research
The paper reports on the activities and preliminary results of archaeological research of Middle Palaeolithic sites in Dalmatia and geological research consisting of drilling at potential sites. The activities were carried out within the framework of the second and third years of the research project Late Mousterian in the Eastern Adriatic – towards understanding of late Neanderthals’ identity and their demise, funded by the Croatian Science Foundation. The fieldwork mostly focused on the continuation of excavation at Velika pećina in Kličevica and research at underwater Palaeolithic site of Kaštel Štafilić – Resnik, in addition to the test excavation of a site in the hinterland of Kaštela (Giljanovići/Karanušići) and geological drillings
Towards Methodological Principles for Experience Textile Archaeology. Experimental Approach to the Aegean Bronze Age Textile Techniques in the Institute of Archaeology, University of Warsaw
Experimental archaeology is commonly employed in the research on textiles and textile production in prehistory, in order to explain the operational aspects of textile manufacturing and the functionality of textile tools, to investigate fabric wear and decomposition processes, and to reconstruct ancient textiles and costumes. ‘Experience textile archaeology’ is a term which describes tests and trials of experiential character performed by actors who are not skilled craftspeople in order to get them acquainted with textile production techniques through practice. Although the importance of experience archaeology as a pedagogical tool has already been acknowledged, the experience approach rarely generates analogies that could be further exploited in the academic discourse. However, in the author’s opinion, experiential tests and trials, if well scheduled, documented and conducted over a longer period of time, may also contribute to improving the knowledge of textile craft of societies of the past. The methodological principles henceforth suggested for experience activities have been introduced by the author and concern tests conducted with students of archaeology at the University of Warsaw
A loom from Virje
Virje, a site in the Podravina region, with its two positions – Volarski breg and Sušine – has been known as an archaeological site for several decades. Salvage excavations were carried out there between 2008 and 2014. The several-year-long excavations by the Institute of Archaeology yielded the remains of a smelting workshop, in addition to the habitation remains from the Early and High Middle Ages and Late Antiquity, while the 2010 excavations, carried out by the Koprivnica Municipal Museum, revealed traces of a settlement from the Early and Late Iron Ages. Based on the results of a geophysical research carried out in spring 2014 at Sušine, a gentle elevation next to the Čivičevac canal, a position was selected for subsequent salvage archaeological excavations, which were carried out in November the same year. The trench, carefully positioned at the place of a supposed structure, yielded valuable results: a large sunken structure of rectangular plan. Its northern part had accommodated a loom, with in situ remains consisting of around thirty completely preserved clay weights. After the weights had been removed, a greyish feature was observed by the edge of the structure, presumably the remains of a decayed straight wooden beam that formed part of the loom. The function of the two iron objects found in the eastern and western parts of the trench cannot be ascertained. Differences in the shape and mass of the weights, in addition to their position in the excavated context, as well as the usewear traces on some weights, inspired the authors to adopt an experimental approach in the interpretation of the appearance of the loom. Based on the conducted experiments, conclusions are put forward regarding the possible way the weights and loom were used, the type and thickness of the thread and the appearance of the weaving and the fabric. The conclusion about the date in which the loom was used is based on the collected pottery fragments from the structure, which belong to the La Tene period
