Prostorije 8. Preciznije, definiran je stratigrafski slijed njezinoga zapadnoga dijela, gdje se kroz kasnoantičko razdoblje (a vjerojatno i ranije) nalazila veća prostorija čiju funkciju, barem u jednom trenutku, možemo povezati uz aktivnosti pripreme/konzumacije hrane. Research at the site Stancija Blek (Tar) continued in 2015 as part of systematic exchavations that have been carried out since 2008 by the Poreč Heritage Museum and the Institute of Archaeology. As previously, research was carried out in the so-called Room 8, in the western part of which an oven and several destruction and burning layers were located, indicating the existance of a unitary space that during Late Antiquity, went through a series of adaptations which are visibile in the stratigraphy. In fact, it is clear that the cistern was defunctionalized during a later Antique period and the area to the west of the cistern was partly used for food preparation/consumption, although craft activities have not been ruled out. In the area of the cistern an interesting architectural layout of subsequent remodelings and the refunctionalisation of the space as a residential area (?), which also allowed the preservation of its perimetral walls, has been established. By better defining the northern wall of the cistern it can now be supposed that it was covered by triple vaults. Thanks to the commitment of the Poreč Heritage Museum and the Italian Community in Tar, the public was introduced to the research results and the importance of Stari Tar site

The Early Iron Age necropolis of Gradci is part of a complex archaeological site in the vicinity of the municipality of Kaptol, near Požega (Croatia). In 2007, tumulus 13 was excavated and, on the basis of a typological analysis of the artefacts discovered, dated to period Ha C2/D1. In 2010, tumulus 14 was explored. That one has been dated to Ha C2, that is, to the second half of the 7th cent. BC. During the excavations, samples for archaeobotanical analysis were taken from both tumuli; this paper presents the results of that analysis. From tumulus 13, 140 carbonized plant remains were recovered. Predominant among them were various fruits gathered from the environment, with greatest presence of common hazel (Corylus avellana). In tumulus 14, 3880 carbonized plant remains were recorded. Predominant among them were various cereal species, with a noticeable proportion of ‘fruit’ grave goods, primarily wild apples (Malus sylvestris). Grave goods of plant origin were undoubtedly very important in the Hallstatt grave ritual, but for a more precise reconstruction of the customs of the time we have to complete the ongoing analysis of finds from other tumuli within the same site

A short weaving experiment took place at the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb in order to test the functional nature of the published astragali from Gomolava site as well as to determine and discuss their potential for use as loom-weights. Authors managed to borrow a set of 15 astragali from the Institute for Quaternary Paleontology and Geology in Zagreb. They warped 14 of them on a vertical loom, built by the Centre for Experimental Archaeology – CEKSA, in order to demonstrate weaving techniques to the participants and visitors of the workshop. The main purpose of the experiment was to test their potential functionality, while recording the weaving experience, in order to raise some particular questions that should be addressed in the prospective research on the astragali bones. Being limited by time, during the experiment only a single piece of textile was woven. The fifteenth astragalus bone was used for a simple spooling experiment

An Inscribed Annular Brooch from the Templar Site of Gora – A Possible Decipherment

Starting from an inscribed silver annular brooch discovered in the archaeological excavations of the Templar church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gora near Petrinja, as a unique find in Croatia, the authors in this paper, for the first time in the Croatian literature, present in brief the types of brooches, focusing on those bearing an inscription. Commenting on the types of inscriptions, the authors try to comprehend the full stratification of the functions of the artefact singled out in the title. In their attempt to read the unique inscription incised into the Gora brooch, in which they have been successful to a large extent, they at the same time succeed in decoding the inscription on another brooch, this time from Strasbourg. Having analysed the brooch from Gora and its archaeological context, as well as having compared it with analogous finds throughout Europe, the authors have put forward a date for the brooch and determined the provenance, while at the same time revealing the probable identity of the person buried together with it. In the conclusion, they put a stress on the importance of the decipherment of symbolic codes on mediaeval jewellery, since it brings us closer to the rich worldview of mediaeval populations, which generally figures very modestly in the preserved mediaeval sources

Prema tipološko-kronološkim osobinama nalaza, lokalitet se može datirati u stariju fazu kasnoga brončanog doba (Br D–Ha A).A segment of a Late Bronze Age settlement was researched at Podgajac–Glogovica site during 2009–2010 as part of a rescue excavation project on the Slobodnica–Donji Miholjac pipeline. Features dating from various periods beside the Late Bronze Age were recorded at the site, namely the Eneolithic, Late Iron Age and Late Middle Ages. Finds and features dating from the Late Bronze Age are elaborated in this paper. The settlement features include: two ditches, a surface structure and several refuse pits. The finds that were discovered during the excavations are common for this type of site (fragments of pottery vessels, metal objects). In addition to the more common finds, a large collection of casting moulds for bronze objects was discovered at the site. The late Bronze Age phase of the site can be dated to the earlier phase of The Late Bronze Age (Br D–Ha A) based on typo–chronological characteristics of recovered finds

To the Inhabitants of Narona – municipibus municipii

    Get PDF
The abbreviation of MM that can be found on the inscriptions commissioned by freedmen seviri from the Roman municipality of Narona, has been interpreted in scientific literature and epigraphic databases as: VIvir m(agister) M(ercurialis) or VIvir m(onu)m(entum) ob honorem. Based on the epigraphic analysis and on the comparison with similar monuments from Latium, Campania and the province of Baetica, this interpretation is hereby disputed, and the alternative one proposed, resolving the abbreviation of MM as municipubus municipii. The notion of a dual municipality in Narona, and of a corresponding transformation from quattuorviri to duoviri is also disputed. The Vithinghoff model, re¬jecting the possibility of utilization of inhabitants’ tribus names as the basis for the calculation of the timeline of the constitution of the colony, is substantiated. Medini’s account of the changes of status of the freedmen (libertini) in Narona is complemented through a reconstruction of the economic, political and administrative profile of the Late Republican and Early Imperial Narona. It has been concluded that the Naronitan community had undergone a transformation in order to comply with lex Iulia municipalis, lex Roscia and lex Iulia theatralis, regulating the position of social orders and interest groups. Descendants of the freedmen from the times of the old conventus proceeded to amalgamate with the newly-arrived settlers with the civil status, while the subsequently freed libertines enjoyed no more access to privileged positions in the municipal administration
