Research results of the Sotin – Zmajevac Site in the Croatian Danube Region
Within the research project of the Croatian Science Foundation Iron Age female identities in the southern part of the Carpathian Basin (FEMINE / IP-06-2016-1749), the Institute of Archaeology during the November 2017 carried out a trial archaeological excavation of Sotin – Zmajevac site (Fig. 1). Investigations were conducted to reveal the position of the cemetery from the Late Iron Age (La Tène culture), since three cremation burials were found at the beginning of the 20th century at Zmajevac which were dated to the Late La Tène (LT D1), respectively at the beginning of the 1st c. BC (Majnarić-Pandžić 1970; 1972/1973; Božič 1981; Guštin 1984; Ilkić 1999). Finds of weaponry belong to male burials, while female burials contained characteristic costume and jewellery items (Fig. 2). In burials ceramic and bronze vessels were also revealed indicating the existence of supra-regional distribution networks (Majnarić-Pandžić 1996; Dizdar, Radman-Livaja 2004; 2015). The mentioned burials from Sotin, although discovered more than a hundred years ago, are still the only known Late La Tène female burials in the eastern part of Croatia until today (Majnarić-Pandžić 1972/1973; Božič 1981: Guštin 1984).
In the view of exceptional finds from Zmajevac, the existence of Late La Tène site was confirmed by results of field surveys and in the rescue excavation carried out in 2015 (Ložnjak Dizdar et al. 2016). The aim of the research was the discovery of female burials with characteristic finds that would testify about the different aspects of female social identities during the Late La Tène (i.e. Todorović 1972). During the research, traces of the Late La Tène (Figs. 3–5) and Late Medieval settlements (Figs. 6–8) were discovered, spreading along the edge of the loess plateau above the Danube. A large number of ceramic spindle whorls point to textile production at the site and testify to the different aspects of female social identities and everyday activities that female members of population performed in households during the Late Iron Age

Field survey of the Koprivnica and Đurđevac part of the River Drava Basin
During spring and fall of 2017 extensive perambulations and field surveys have been undertaken on the wider territory along the Drava River. The objective of thise research, which was undertaken within a scientific-research project TransFER (IP-05-2016-5047), was to collect additional information on known archaeological sites and the discovery of new sites connected with the production and processing of iron. During the surveys over 200 archaeological sites were perambulated of which over 60 were new (Tab. 1). Even though more of these new sites, dated to various archaeological and historical periods (Fig. 2), from late Neolithic/early Eneolithic, through Bronze and Iron age and Antiquity up to medieval and Modern period, contained only pieces of ceramics, pieces of blacksmith’s or/and smelting slag were also found on a large number of them (Fig. 1). Even though pieces of Modern Age ceramics most probably found their way to these positions during fertilization or other agricultural activities, the dating range of all these sites points to the fact that the territory of the Koprivnica and Đurđevac part of the River Drava Basin has always been a favourable place to live
The database of antique (Greek and Roman) archaeological sites of the Republic of Croatia
The project The database of antique archaeological sites of the Republic of Croatia of the Institute of Archeology (BAZA) has been online since 24th May 2018 when it was set on the website of the Institute (http://baza.iarh.hr/public/locality/map). As a source of data, the available literature is used together with knowledge gathered from the Institute's scientific activities and data stored in the archives of the Institute of Archeology. The aim of the project is creating a database of Greek and Roman archaeological sites as the foundation for science, culture, preservation of Croatian heritage, as well as the presentation of cultural tourism. BAZA is based on archaeological sites in Croatia that are either known from the literature or by field research, with the aim of creating tools that provide easier access to the data needed for future scientific research, heritage management and the creation of professional and scientific projects that fundamentally represent archaeological heritage. The database is enriched with information about archaeological sites that are attractive enough to become a tourist destination. During the presentation of BAZA, we will show its structure and administrative part and how it is used in public search
Presentation of the database of ancient sites of the Republic of Croatia with special reference to Požeško-slavonska county
During the archaeological excavations on Poljana pape Ivana Pavla II in Zadar, six Roman monumental statue bases with inscriptions were discovered in the foundations of a mediaeval wall. They were submerged in a mixture of rainwater and the nearby sea. Because of the importance of the find, all the bases were removed from the foundations and promptly conserved. After the conservation, the statue bases were brought back to the newly organised archaeological park, which is now connected to the complex of the Roman Forum and includes the mediaeval wall. The persons who were honoured in the inscriptions on the statue bases in Iader come from almost all the social classes of the Roman world – from senators and equestrians to the municipal elite and the sons of freedmen. Each of the inscriptions deserves full attention, and they are chronologically analysed in separate chapters.
Research of the fortifications, church complex and Late Antique readaptations on the Stancija Blek (Tar) site in 2017
The 2017 research and conservation activities carried out at the Stancija Blek site in Tar covered three sectors of the multiphase architectonic complex which is being investigated since 2008 (Fig. 1). In sector P4, now researched for the first time, the course of the (early) medieval fencing wall was determined, as well as the entryway flanked by two massive walls (SU 185 and 186). The western side of the entrance was later walled, creating a small room, to then be filled with destruction debris held by another wall leaning to it from the east (Fig. 2), and marking the final defunctionalisation of this space.
Within sector P8 layers of collapse debris and Late Antique readaptations of an early Imperial room were defined. The room, stretching along the western side of the previously defined cistern was filled with debris upon which a hearth was placed (Fig. 4) and a dividing wall stretching in east-west orientation was built. In the south-eastern corner of this space, a wall (SU 085) with integrated channel, whose spout exists in the room, was uncovered, pointing to the existence of a water management system alongside the cistern. In the western part a threshold was identified, indicating the entrance to the room. The southern limit of the room is still to be defined, as the presently visible wall SU 078, leaning onto SU 085, is a later addition (Fig. 3).
In sector P8A/3, relative to the church and eastern section of the cistern, a thick layer of recent debris was removed in order to allow conservation of the eastern cistern's wall and the southern church's wall. This allowed the uncovering of a room annexed to the church from south, underneath which a raster of previous walls is visible. A wall stretching further south indicates the possible existence of another annex (Fig. 5). The time of building of the annex is still to be determined, but there are indications that it might have been part of the same construction project as the church, thus built within a short time-span after it.
Conservation of the afore-mentioned walls was carried out by removal of loose stones and their repositioning keeping the original height of the walls. Binding was carried out with lime and sand mortar and finishing was done so to preserve the original appearance of the walls' faces and tops

INSTRUMENTUM DOMESTICUM S LOKALITETA BANJAČE
In this paper the scientific analysis of pottery, glass, stone and bone tools from the village site of Banjače. Such material can be called instrumentum domesticum. The pottery finds were divided into amphorae, kitchen and table ware, weights and tegulae. The amphorae mostly originate from the eastern Mediterranean (LR1 I LR2), with only a few finds of African origin (spatehion). Several new types of amphorae also appear. Kitchen ware includes pots and deep bowls of regional character, and fine ware mostly originates from Africa (5th century). Round ceramic weights could have been used as parts of spindles, looms or nets. Some, so called, semi-products, were also found, i.e. pottery fragments which were secondarily shaped into weights. Glass finds (lamps, glasses, small bowls) display a typical repertoire of the 5th and 6th centuries. Stone finds- mortar and parts of hand grindstones were mostly found in structure 2, which can point to its function-an area used for processing food, i.e. grinding cereals and other ingredients, as well as storage. A fragment of a tripartite bone comb was also found.U ovom radu obuhvaćena je znanstvena analiza keramike, stakla, kamenih i koštanih nalaza s lokaliteta seoskog karaktera Banjače.
The Ričina spring cave in Buško Jezero. The first traces of the Palaeolithic in the western Herzegovina region
The Ričina spring cave is located in the wider region of the Vrilo hamlet in the vicinity of Tomislavgrad. It is a part of a larger complex, more precisely there are three cave entrances mutually connected with cave channels, created as a consequence of the corrosive activity of a strong underground stream. The complex and the surrounding region are flooded when there is a high water level in the reservoir. The cave complex has already been documented speleologically, and remains of stone tools were noticed by speleologists in one of their visits to the cave. This discovery incited archaeological research that resulted in the identification of a place in front of the cave where lithic objects were made. The thin cultural layer and spatial disposition of the finds imply their secondary position, but the geomorphological characteristics of the terrain indicate that it was the original zone of lithic production. The presence of almost all the phases of the operational sequence (only the collection of raw material is missing) indicates that the entire process of production happened at this spot. Though chronological analyses are unavailable for the time being, typological and technological characteristics, along with the presence of retouched blades, end scrapers and backed bladelets, clearly indicate the Epigravettian culture. It means that the site at the source of Ričina is the first Palaeolithic site in the western Herzegovina region
