In 2017 and 2018, the Institute of Archaeology continued the systematic archaeological excavations on the Kalnik – Igrišče site. Under the archaeological records indicating metallurgical activities in the area during the late Ha B phase according to relative chronology, the excavations uncovered a collapsed multi-layered older structure of a residential/work nature, which has been dated also to the Ha B phase. Moreover, the research revealed the remains of a structure from the transition phase of Ha A to Ha B phase, which was largely damaged by building interventions from the earlier phase of the Urnfield culture. From the archaeological aspect, a strong continuity of life in the Late Bronze Age has been identified; the character of the finds and the changes in the mode of the site usage indicate dynamic social/economic changes

The second season of the rescue archaeological excavation of the Late Avar period cemetery on the Šarengrad – Klopare site confirmed and enriched the knowledge of period of the 8th century in the Croatian Danube Region. The research was focused on the area of the cemetery stretching to the east, resulting in the discovery of new rows of burials (Fig. 1–2) with extremely richly equipped graves (Fig. 3–5), highlighting the discovery of grave wooden architecture in several graves (Fig. 6). The deceased were laid in very deep grave pits (Fig. 3). The most prominent are burials of horsemen with horses and their equipment (Figs. 4–5) and a grave of warrior with a single-edge curved sword and belt set were found (Fig. 9; 12). Females are accompanied by objects of costume and jewellery as well as items for everyday use. Outstanding are silver lunulus earrings (Fig. 11). Several children’s burials were also found, characterized by shallow buried grave pits. Ceramic vessels and remains of animal bones testify to the funeral ritual (Fig. 7). The research has defined the direction of the spreading of the cemetery, which for the time being is the first archeologically investigated Late Avar cemetery dated to the 8th century in the Croatian Danube Region

Batina (Kiskőszeg) is one of the most significant sites in the southern Carpathian Basin from the end of the Late Bronze Age and the beginning of the Early Iron Age. For more than a century, Batina has been the source of many exceptional finds, now stored in the collections of several European museums, which are considered to originate from destroyed funerary complexes and which helped define the chronology of the development of the Dalj Group. A systematic field survey was done to determine the location of the Dalj Group cemetery in Batina. Its results indicated that the cemetery could have been located in Sredno, a site south of the contemporary settlement on Gradac. This was followed by archaeological excavations in Sredno, which revealed many cremation graves of the Dalj Group from the Late Bronze Age and the beginning of the Early Iron Age. The graves contained ceramic, metal and glass finds, confirming the earlier hypotheses about the great significance of Batina as an important southern Pannonian centre from the end of the 2nd millennium BC and the first centuries of the 1st millennium BC, which stood on an important communication line along the Danube.

Institute of Archaeology in Zagreb continued systematic archaeological excavations at Galovo site near Slavonski Brod in July 2017. The area of 55 m2 on the southwestern edge of the previously excavated part of the settlement was explored. This area mostly coincides with the surface surveyed by geophysical methods in 2016 (Botić 2017a: 144, Fig. 3). Two larger pit features (Figs. 1–3) were partially investigated and a large number of wooden posts of different dimensions were defined. Those two larger features are considerably shallowly dug in than the rest of the pit features from this site indicating younger phase of the settlement. This phase, defined for the first time during this year’s excavation, can be determined as the youngest according to ceramic finds which partly, instead of chaff tempering, exhibit sand tempering or tempering with admixtures of stone and chipped stone debris (Fig. 6)

The Institute of Archaeology continued the conservation works on the masonry walls of the Vrbovec Castle in Klenovec Humski in 2017. The main approach was to fix and consolidate the preserved architectural remains of the castle, without any reconstruction or upgrading. However, some reconstruction work was inevitable, especially on the inner walls of the keep, on its very top. The original building technique was respected as much as possible. All major masonry conservation work on the keep in this season is finalized, and the preparatory works for the drainage of rainwater from the top of the tower and from its interior have also been carried out. The inner part of the tower with preserved remains of the original flooring is planned to be conserved in the next season, so that the entire surface is going to be covered by the filling of sterile clay and sealed with a layer of flooring imitation

During June and July 2017 an archaeological research of the Pakrac – Stari Grad site was carried out. Based on georadar research, three probes were established. All three yielded interesting results, although not always such as were expected. Four meters wide walls of one of the Pakrac towers were discovered (Probe 3), as well as the walls of a solid and well-built structure – possible remains of the gothic Hospitaller Church in the backyard of the city (Probe 1) and numerous walls and movable finds, mainly dating to the times of the Ottoman rule over the town (Probe 2)

Sondažna arheološka istraživanja provedena su oko Dvora Patačić i tzv. Kule Zrinskih u Vrbovcu radi uvida u stanje i strukturu temelja objekata, utvrđivanja arheoloških slojeva i struktura. In the fall 2017 probe archaeological investigations around the Dvor Patačić (Patačić Palace) and the so-called Kula Zrinski (Zrinski Tower) in Vrbovec were conducted in order to gain the insight into the state and structure of the foundations of the buildings, archaeological layers and other structures. An additional goal of the opened trenches around Kula Zrinski was to try to define the remains and the disposition of the Patačić Castle, from which the only preserved part is just mentioned tower, and to examine the possible continuity of the location from the late Middle Ages. The remains of shallow-founded structures of masonry brickwork or shallow foundations made of stone with brick have been found, and preliminary considerations point to the fact that there have been several phases of building activities through the Modern Era period

Archaeological research of the St. Martin’s Church in Prozorje in 2017

During September and October 2017, after an eight-year break, archaeological research of the church of St. Martin at the site Prozorje (Martin-Breg) in Dugo Selo, continued. One probe (Probe 6) was explored, covering the entire surface of the church’s aisle. Below the humus layer that accumulated after the church went out of use, some paving and other structures, such as tombs, crypts, columns that held the choir and like, were discovered. Nineteen graves in total were explored and in most of them ‘special finds’ were discovered. In 47 % of them religious objects were found. They are mostly medallions, crucifixes, rosaries or parts of rosaries. Even more special finds was collected in the mixed layers. Among the abovementioned categories of finds there were also numerous coins, buttons, fragments of pottery and glass and the, especially outstanding, bronze breviary. The reason for such a large number of finds could lay in frequent digging and re-burying within the church’s aisle during which many graves were destroyed. A large number of human bones found in the mixed layer support this theory

Pottery Production, Landscape and Economy of Roman Dalmatia. Interdisciplinary approaches

    No full text
Pottery Production, Landscape and Economy of Roman Dalmatia: Interdisciplinary approaches offers results of work on RED - Roman Economy in Dalmatia: production, distribution and demand in the light of pottery workshops (IP-11-2013-3973) project. It presents interdisciplinary research carried out on the Roman sites of pottery workshops active within the coastal area of the province of Dalmatia as well as on material recovered during the excavations. The presentation revolves around three thematic units: workshops and their products together with their role in the local provincial economy, location of workshops within the landscape, and archaeometric research which connects the two. These combined approaches contribute to the study of ceramic production in the area whereas new methodological approaches to the subject allow for the placement of pottery workshops in the broader context of Roman economy and landscape and natural resources of the eastern Adriatic

Ljubljana i Cetina: lončarski stilovi 3. tisućljeća prije Krista na prostoru istočnoga Jadrana

This contribution provides a new synthetic overview of the eastern Adriatic pottery styles of the third millennium BC, based on 146 sites from which characteristic pottery has been published. Parting with the traditional concepts of archaeological cultures and periods, it first seeks clear definitions of Ljubljana-Adriatic and Cetina pottery styles. It follows with a critical reexamination of the evidence that, up to the present, has been used for the dating of those styles: stratigraphic information from stratified sites and the association of characteristic pottery with objects made of metal. This is followed by a pioneering attempt to date the same styles by using the available radiocarbon dates. In conclusion, Ljubljana-Adriatic and Cetina styles are placed in their wider spatial and temporal context.
