Notes on the diet in Lika during the Roman period

    No full text
U radu se donosi pregled dosadašnjih saznanja o prehrani u rimsko doba Like. The paper provides an overview of the current published findings on nutrition in Roman times of Lika. Archeobotanical and archaeozoological analyzes have so far been made only at the site of Lički Ribnik, while from the site of Žuta Lokva several types of amphorae are known which contribute to the knowledge of the topic. The data provided the data that the Romans consumed millet, peas, beef and mutton in Lika. They drank wine from the Adriatic coast, used olive oil from Istria and Spain, and made their dishes with a special Roman spice garum

The fieldwork within project RED: Roman Economy in Dalmatia (HRZZ, IP-11-2013-3973) in the last year focused on the area of Plemići bay in Ražanac Municipality (Zadar County), where the remains of a Roman pottery workshop have been identified. Research was done on land through geophysical surveys and geological sampling, and under sea through detailed documenting of one of the two identified harbour wharves

The research on the site of a Roman maritime villa in Soline Cove on St. Clement Island (Pakleni Islands, Hvarski Škoji), uninterrupted since 2007, was continued in June 2017. The purpose of this years’ work was to continue the excavations in the productive area (pars rustica) of the villa, but also to associate and document the multi-phase premises and architecture that had already been partly excavated. The new trench 20 was laid in the north-eastern extension of trench 19 from 2017, which had contained well-preserved basins covered with fine waterproof plaster. In trench 20, one of those basins was documented in its entirety, while another shallow basin of the same kind was found next to it. There was the significant find of 10 late Roman coins, with particularly well-preserved coins of Emperor Julian (361–363). The results of the works in the productive area of the villa from 2014 to 2018 showed production structures sharing the same space and function, which consist of basins covered with fine waterproof plaster, a round masonry structure that was probably the base of a press, and a floor lay with the opus signinum technique. The round base was built on earlier walls; the basins are earlier too, and they may have had a different purpose in the earlier phase. This year’s excavations complement our knowledge on the arrangement and chronology of the architecture and on the activities in the outhouse area in late antiquity

In May 2017 and August 2018, at the Kurilovec – Belinščica site, there was a systematic field survey with intense surface sampling. The objective was to determine the distribution and characteristics of the surface archaeological material. On the basis of the preliminary analysis of the collected data, we can single out areas with a more intense phenomenon of surface finds, as well as those where the frequency of surface material drops significantly. From that aspect, it was noticed that the distribution coincides with the area of the hillock of the Bronze Age settlement, with borders that were precisely identified during past excavations

The additional rescue archaeological excavations of the AN 6 Petrijevci – Karaševo 2 site, on the route of D34 state road bypassing Petrijevci, uncovered the remains of archaeological structures located on two gentle elevations next to a place where a small stream used to run. Post-holes and pits were found in the eastern part of the site; the humus layer contained fragments of medieval pottery, indicating that the excavations comprised the southern edge of the settlement standing in the eastern part of today’s Petrijevci. The excavations in the western part of the site uncovered few ceramic fragments of prehistoric pottery, which probably belong to the settlement that stood to the south of the route of the future Petrijevci bypass road

The period at the turn of the 4th and 5th centuries produced a wealth of pottery, including large storage jars with a T-shaped rim and decorated with single or multiple wavy lines and horizontal grooves on the rim and body. It is a fairly specific pottery form that is quite rare at Slovenian sites; apart from Rifnik, a more substantial quantity has only been excavated in Kranj. Elsewhere (Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia), such jars are known in greater numbers on a few sites only and are similar to those from Rifnik in shape and decoration, but not fabric. At Rifnik, their fabric is the same as that used for several other kinds of pottery from the same period, which suggests a local production that followed the general trends of the day.

Status of women in the Danube Basin communities in the Early Iron Age – Example of grave 1 from Sotin

Interdisciplinarne analize konteksta, nalaza i uzoraka omogućavaju detaljnije interpretacije pogrebnih običaja, identiteta i statusa pokojnika kroz analizu pojedinačnih grobova. Eastern Slavonia, western Bačka, and western Syrmia in the Early Iron Age were inhabited by communities associated with the material culture of the Dalj group. The continuity of life and burials on the same sites can be followed from the Late Bronze Age. Recent excavations at Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age cemeteries in Sotin have identified 119 graves. These are cremation graves; in most of them, the cremated remains of the dead and the remains of costume and personal items were placed in urns and covered with a bowl serving as lid. The Early Iron Age graves included ceramic sets of pots, cups, kantharoi, and bowls, containing food and drinks as departing gifts within the funerary rite. Interdisciplinary analyses of contexts, finds, and samples, have led to more detailed interpretations of funerary rites, identities, and the status of the dead, by analysing specific graves. The definite context linking the pottery finds and the jewellery has resulted from the detailed dating of the inventory in the Danube Basin from the Early Iron Age, considered within the network of communications and influences that can be seen from the objects and funerary rites

Archaeological research on the site of Veliki Zdenci – Crni Lug in 2018

Archaeological test excavations of the lowland settlement (gradište) of Veliki Zdenci – Crni Lug brought exceptional results, which provided insights into the 13th century, when the fortification was built, in, and the first half of the 16th century, when it was abandoned, but also into how the fortification was built and reconstructed in various phases. The wide spectrum of ceramic tableware, especially from the second horizon of the fortification (15th c.), indicates the status of the fortification owners, who furnished their castle in line with the fashion and status standards of the European aristocracy of the time
