Research at Stancija Blek (Tar – Vabriga/Torre – Abrega): new insights in the Medieval phase of the site
The 2018 excavations on the Stancija Blek site near Tar (Tar – Vabriga / Torre – Abrega municipality, Istrian County) were undertaken in three sectors: west of the ancient cistern, between the tower and the rampart, and in the area south of the church. The graves found in the latter area, or more precisely, in both identified annexes, can be dated to the period after the 9th century on the basis of the location and the sporadic finds from the fills. Five graves have been identified, but only three have been explored: two are family graves, and one is actually an ossuary dominated by child burials. In the southwestern part of the site, excavations were finished in the sector west of the cistern; more to the west, works began on removing the layer of rubble and collapsed material several meters thick, filling the space between the western annex of the tower and the rampart. Even though the works next to the church and in the western part of the site will continue during the next campaigns, the collected preliminary data is valuable for identifying the function of the church annex and defining the stratigraphy of the preserved layers between the ramparts and the towers
Bršadin, Pašnjak pod selom – results of the archaeological excavations in 2018
The excavations of the Bršadin – Pašnjak pod selom site, undertaken in June 2018, continued the excavations in trench 1 in the eastern part of the site. Under the layer of ashes defined in 2016, there were parts of a partially burned layer consisting of several micro-layers. The layer in the eastern and western parts was cut by ditches, where the remains of large wooden pillars were identified. These ditches were used in at least two phases. In the western part of the trench, another ditch with smaller post-holes was identified, and all the post-holes were parallel and lay on the north – south axis. The remains of thinner floor slats of yellow unbaked clay were identified in the north-west and north-east part of the trench, in several layers. In the northwest corner of the trench, in the layer between two slats, the researchers explored a part of a smaller pit, which was filled with unbaked clay spheres. A part of movable finds belongs to the Sopot culture, while finer pottery finds point to the population presence or direct influence of the Vinča culture (of transitional phase C/D and phase D1). The series of radiocarbon dates matches the same phases of the tell Vinča – Belo brdo
Results of the Rescue Archaeological Excavations of the AN 5 Petrijevci – Karaševo 1 site
The additional rescue archaeological excavations of the AN 5 Petrijevci – Karaševo 1 site, on the route of D34 state road bypassing Petrijevci, uncovered the remains of archaeological structures located on the northern slopes of a gentle elevation next to a place where a small stream used to run. The central part of the excavated area contained post-holes and narrow ditches, but also fragments of La Tène and medieval pottery, indicating that the excavations comprised the northern edge of the prehistoric and medieval settlement standing to the south of today’s Petrijevci and the route of the future bypass
Research within the “Archaeological topography of the Island of Rab” project at Lopar in 2018: new data on Prehistoric and late Antique sites
The latest research campaigns within the project Archaeological Topography of the Island of Rab have included a series of interdisciplinary methods facilitating the identification and documentation of the determined sites, locations, and their surroundings. Also, test trenches have been made on certain sites since 2016 to verify the data and obtain a clearer chronology. On the basis of this methodology, sites on Lopar peninsula have been researched in the 2018 campaign too. The works included test trenches and geoarchaeological research in Podšilo bay, geophysical measurements on cape Kaštelina, and a survey of the wider areas of cape Šilo and Dubac cove. The results are still preliminary, but they already point to a complex use of Podšilo bay in late antiquity, while possible remains of Iron Age settlement architecture have been recorded on cape Kaštelina
African imports found on the island of Brač/Brattia, Dalmatia
There are more than 90 Roman rural sites on the island of Brač. On 18 of them African import has been identified including amphorae, terra sigillata and cooking ware. African import on the island began in the 2nd and lasted till 7th c. with the emphasis on the 3rd and 4th c. Finds suggest that oil and salsamenta were dominant among the imported goods with smaller quantities of vine. The typology of the finds does not differ from that on other eastern Adriatic locations. Results obtained so far are not sufficient to make definite conclusions and there are many questions to be answered including: what did the local economy look like before, why does import of these goods start at all, did the local economy collapse or this import was so aggressive that local economies were not competitive? There is also a possibility that the buyers simply had a wish for diversity on their table. The final destination of these African goods could have been other locations in Dalmatian inland and/or Pannonia that were no longer supplied by, for example, Istrian oil
Roman lamps found in Ilok (Pannonia Inferior)
Fortifications, defence systems, structures and features in the past: Proceedings of the 4th International Scientific Conference on Mediaeval Archaeology of the Institute of Archaeology
This edition brings the conference papers from the 4th International Conference on Mediaeval Archaeology organised by the Institute of Archaeology in Zagreb in 2017. It is a result of efforts of the medievalists of the Institute of Archaeology to establish continued international gathering of the academic community in Zagreb in order to discuss current archeological topics on mediaeval archeology. The 4th International Scientific Conference on Mediaeval Archaeology Fortifications, defence systems, structures and features in the past, organized by the Institute of Archaeology in cooperation with the Croatian Institute of History, took place from the 7th till the 9th of June 2017 in Zagreb. Our wish was to encourage the researchers to present, through this topic, their knowledge on technical solutions of certain defensive elements of different fortifications, different manifestations and changes in the organization of defensive structures and systems over time, with regard to the causes of those changes and identification of possible patterns of defence systems, structures and features in a certain area, region or in a certain archaeological or historical period. Since the aim of the scientific conference was to perceive the given topic in an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary manner, we are pleased that in this book, besides the papers dealing with mediaeval fortifications, we have the opportunity to publish 37 papers that study the defence systems in the preceding and following periods (Prehistory, Antiquity, Modern Period) and that archaeological studies are complemented by the studies of historians, art historians and architects as well
Geophysical research on the site of Hlebine – Svetinjski breg in 2018
In April and August 2018, the Institute of Archaeology and Gearh Ltd., a company from Maribor, did geophysical research on the site of Hlebine – Svetinjski breg. Georadar, magnet, and geoelectric tomography methods were applied on the site. The research identified the exact position of the church, the cemetery, and their fence walls. Aside from the sacral complex, traces were found of other archaeological structures; the potential of the site was confirmed, and all the necessary data were collected for targeted archaeological research in the future
Research results for Lovas (Western Syrmia) – Discovery of an Early La Tène biritual cemetery
The archaeological site in Lovas in Western Syrmia is located in the very centre of the village, on the eastern edge of the loess elevation above a small stream. The construction works in A. Starčevića Street in the 1970s uncovered inhumation graves that were dated to the latter phase of the Early Iron Age on the basis of the finds of weapons and jewellery. Within the FEMINE project, there were trial excavations in the accessible areas of the site that discovered a biritual cemetery from the beginning of the Late Iron Age (LT B2); the find of an inhumation grave with no finds might indicate that the burials already started in the Čurug phase, i.e. at the end of the Early Iron Age. Notable discovery include an Early La Tene cremation grave of a warrior and an inhumation grave of a woman that was richly furnished with items of costume and jewellery. Considering the earlier insights and the new finds, the burials in the cemetery probably started during the end of the Early Iron Age already, and continued uninterruptedly at the beginning of the Late Iron Age. Therefore, the trial excavations undertaken within the FEMINE project on the site of Lovas – A. Starčevića Street confirmed the assumption that it was an exceptionally important site from the turn of the Early and Late Iron Age, which will be crucial for the future research of this dynamic period, especially because, for the first time in northern Croatia, the excavations documented closed funerary complexes with finds and a related anthropological sample, which will enable the implementation of interdisciplinary bioarchaeological analyses
The Mousterian industry of Veternica Cave
Veternica Cave is a Middle Paleolithic site located on the southwestern part of Medvednica Mountain, Croatia. From 1951 to 1955 and in 1971 the site was excavated and hundreds of stone artefacts of the Mousterian culture were collected. This paper presents a lithic analysis of these artefacts and, in spite of mixed finds from multiple layers, gives important data on technology, typology and raw material use. Based on the results and the comparison with other sites in the neighbouring regions, the Middle Paleolithic industry of Veternica is placed in a chronological and cultural framework
