Results of additional rescue archaeological excavation of the prehistoric site AN 7A Jagodnjak – Napuštene njive (Baranya)
The additional rescue archaeological excavations of the site AN 7A Jagodnjak – Napuštene njive in Baranya, on the route of the Osijek – Beli Manastir highway, uncovered the southern edge of a Middle Bronze Age settlement which was explored in 2015. The south part of the explored area contained structures belonging to the Copper Age Lasinja culture. Research showed that the Middle Bronze Age settlement stretched for three hundred meters to the south of the central part of the settlement fortified by a ditch. The gentle rise in the southern part of the site contained traces of large pits where the fills included characteristic ceramic fragments of the Lasinja culture

The beginning of 2018 was the starting date of Life on the Roman Road: Communications, trade and identities on the Roman roads in Croatia from the 1st to the 8th century (UIP-05-2017-9768) (led by Ivana Ožanić Roguljić), a project financed by the Croatian Science Foundation and executed at the Institute of Archaeology in Zagreb. The first year of the project was dedicated to research, dissemination, popularising and educational activities. The first activity of the project was the on-site inspection of the Čepin municipality and of the area next to the Josipovac
Gomila in Jalžabet – emergency rescue excavations in 2017 and 2018 within the A4: Ritual subtopic of the “Strategy for the Scientific Research Activities of the Institute of Archaeology 2014–2019”
Hitna zaštitna istraživanja jalžabetske Gomile i cijelog arheološkog krajolika uz potok Bistričak odlično se uklapaju u podtemu A3: Ritual unutar Strategije znanstvene djelatnosti Instituta. In September 2017, during the implementation of Monumental Landscapes of the Early Iron Age in the Danube Basin, an international project of the Institute of Archaeology and partners from five Central European countries, the archaeological team of the Institute of Archaeology determined that one of the most famous prehistoric monuments on the Croatian soil and one of the rare gigantic unexplored prehistoric funerary tumuli of Central Europe was robbed and greatly damaged during the robbery. There has been a police inquest and a search for the perpetrators of this major attack on culture. Because of the danger of further damage to this valuable archaeological monument, and thanks to the urgent investment of the Croatian Ministry of Culture, the Institute of Archaeology started emergency rescue excavations in early winter 2017 already, and continued in 2018. During two campaigns, a large part of the tumulus was explored. It is planned to continue the field work in 2019, while the complex and long process of conservation and restoration of finds has only begun. The emergency rescue excavations of Gomila in Jalžabet and the entire archaeological landscape along the Bistričak stream go well with the subtopic A3: Ritual within the Strategy for the Scientific Research Activities of the Institute
Multidisciplinary insight into late Roman rural settlement on the northeastern Adriatic coast of Croatia: Island of Rab case study
Results of multidisciplinary research conducted on the island of Rab (Northeastern Adriatic, Croatia) are presented with particular focus on late Roman rural settlements and their economic activities. The settlement in Podšilo bay, Lopar peninsula, is analyzed in more detail, providing evidence on a vibrant local community engaged in diversified craft activities and the exploitation of local land and marine resources. Along with the specificities of its layout and organization, this site also presents unique possibilities to study environmental factors that influenced its setup and economy, but also its demise, tentatively placed within the 6th century AD
Continuation of archaeological research of the cistern and conservation works at the interior area of the keep of the Vrbovec Castle in Klenovec Humski in 2018
This was the fourth and final season of conservation works on the keep of the Vrbovec Castle in Klenovec Humski, discovered by archaeologists. The interior of the keep was conserved by adding a final layer of plaster that imitates the last original preserved layer of the floor. Along with the conservation works, archaeological research continued within the castle cistern
Krugovi i keramika kroz stoljeća: značajke naselja sopotske kulture
The paper presents the results of archaeological research at eight sites of Sopot culture in the area north of the town of Đakovo. The sites are in various stages of investigation – from aerial remote sensing and reconnaissance, to archaeological excavation and the application of the magnetic survey. It has been established through recent research that the sites of the Sopot culture are of a much larger scale and of a much more complex structure than previously thought, and it is proposed to re-evaluate the current interpretations. All settlements are enclosed by one or more ditches, except for the Đakovo – Grabrovac/Ciglana settlement for which it is not possible to determine whether it had a ditch, since most of the site was removed by the activities of the brickworks during the 20th century. The findings from eight settlements were analysed typologically and chronologically in the context of other sites of Sopot culture in Slavonia.U radu se prikazuju rezultati arheoloških istraživanja na osam nalazišta sopotske kulture na području sjeverno od Đakovštine.
The belt-buckle with Bacchus from “Romuliana”
The article deals with two extraordinary gilded silver belt buckles with mythological scenes representing Bacchus, Pan, and a Maenad, reportedly found in the surroundings of Zaječar, most likely in the area of the Roman centre of ROMULIANA. The belt buckles have an excellent parallel from somewhere in “Asia Minor” with scenes of Apollo and Daphne, as well as hunting scenes, perhaps displaying Bellerophon and Chimera. Both belt buckles were associated with the highest military rank of Late Roman society, and probably produced in eastern workshops, perhaps in Constantinople. The presence of both belt buckles confirms the prominent role of this eastern part of the Roman Empire, and of Romuliana, in the period around 400 AD
Scientific-educational and popular program: Prehistoric pottery: interdisciplinarity and experiment
The popular program of science education called Prehistoric Pottery: Interdisciplinarity and Experiment was organised as part of the science popularisation program undertaken by the Center for Experimental Archaeology together with the Institute of Archaeology and the Archaeology Department of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Zagreb, and financed by the Croatian Ministry of Science and Education. The goal is to combine several scientific disciplines by blurring the borders between them and creating a synergy of knowledge of archaeology, geology and ethnology in order to understand the entire pottery production process of the past, using the archaeological experiment as the main method to achieve the objectives. Also, the program intends to provide a more comprehensive understanding of archaeological materials so that the knowledge can be better applied and communicated to the public
Archaeological excavations of Hlebine – Dedanovice site
The archaeological excavations on the Dedanovice site near Hlebine in 2018 explored two furnaces used for one of the demanding procedures of the processing of iron ore and/or intermediate goods and the remains of a contemporary settlement. The position of one larger and three smaller trenches, with the total area of 1010.03 m2, was carefully selected on the basis of the results of geophysical research undertaken on a larger area. Both furnaces had a rectangular fire bed behind a small pit, which was the approach to the interior of the fire bed. The furnaces were probably active in the same period; their fire beds were placed next to each other, but back-to-back, with outward-looking pits. The circumstances of the find indicate that the air supply pipes of the fire bed were installed on the north side of the walls of both furnaces. Along with the furnaces, the excavation included parts of the settlement, which can be divided into three different periods based on the characteristics of the pottery materials from the structures. Two objects date from the late antiquity; one contains ceramic fragments from the Late Middle Ages, while other objects can be dated to the period when the two excavated furnaces were active
New Early Medieval Finds from the Jegeniš Gravel Pit near Koprivnica
In the course of many years of dredging gravel at the Koprivnica
gravel pit of Jegeniš, numerous iron and other archaeological
objects have come to light. Elements of equestrian equipment
from the Zvijerac Collection are presented here. The selected
objects, including horse bits and several types of iron stirrups
of various dimensions, belong to the early medieval period.
The objects are compared to the closest analogous finds and,
together with previously published significant archaeological
finds from the same gravel pit, indicate a considerable intensity
of occupation of this area along the River Drava during several
centuries of the early Middle Ages
