Late Neolithic settlement Bršadin – Pašnjak pod selom, chronostratigraphic sequence of three seasons of archaeological research
Sačuvani kasnoneolitički slojevi u visini od približno 2 m ukazuju na kraći vremenski period okupacije od 200 godina, tj. vrijeme kraja faze Vinča C, cijele faze Vinča C–D i početka faze Vinča D prema Milojčićevoj klasifikaciji (Milojčić 1949; Tasić et al. 2016: 825, Fig. 17) te kasnom stupnju Sopot III i stupnju Sopot IV (Dimitrijević 1968; Marković 2012).Research at the Bršadin – Pašnjak pod selom site in 2016, 2018 and 2019 was conducted in two probes, of which Probe 1 was investigated to the virgin soil, and probe 2 in the upper 80 cm (Botić 2017a; 2017b; 2019). During the three seasons of research in Probe 1, several features belonging to the Late Neolithic layer were defined and a series of radiocarbon dates on animal bone samples was obtained, which enabled the preparation of a preliminary chronostratigraphic model. The settlement and its surroundings have been significantly altered and devastated through the past, so the actual extent and type of settlement is difficult to determine. It is most likely a tell settlement which, in addition to the Late Neolithic layer, most probably contained layers of later periods as well. The stratigraphy of later periods is disturbed, but a larger amount of portable finds was collected in the surface layers of Probe 2, which points to this conclusion. Preserved Late Neolithic layers at a height of app. 2 m indicate a shorter period of occupation of 200 years, i.e. the time of the end of the Vinča C phase, the entire Vinča C–D phase and the beginning of the Vinča D phase according to Milojčić’s classification (Milojčić 1949; Tasić et al. 2016: 825, Fig. 17) and late phase Sopot III and phase Sopot IV (Dimitrijević 1968; Marković 2012)
An integrated geoarchaeological approach to Late Iron Age settlement at the Kaštelina hillfort (Lopar, Island of Rab, Croatia) using Amplitude Data Comparison (ADC) method and trial excavation
Geophysical prospection and small-scale archaeological excavation were undertaken on the site of Kaštelina, a Late Iron Age hillfort settlement located on the Stolac promontory in the northern part of Rab island (Kvarner Gulf, Croatia). Within the frame of the “Archaeological topography of the island of Rab” program, a Polish–Croatian team applied a series of multidisciplinary methods to study the occupational history of the site, its preservation, the nature of selected site features and future research potential. Ground-penetrating radar and magnetometer surveys, combined with the implementation of the AmplitudeData Comparison (ADC) method, led to the detection of remains of Late Iron Age building structures distributed over the north-western side of the Stolac promontory. Archaeological excavations verifying the findings of the geophysical survey resulted in the discovery of a dwelling with associated outdoor features. A preliminary assessment of the outcome of a multidisciplinary approach to the study of the site of Kaštelina emphasizes the importance of the collected data for a general understanding of Late Iron Age settlements and their internal organisation in a wider contex
Geophysical research of archaeological sites with presumed ironworking activity on the example of the sites of Bakovčice, Nađbarice, and Ždala
The surface finds collected in an extensive field review carried out for the needs of the TransFER project pointed to iron production activities in the locations of Bakovčice – Velike Livade 1, Nađbarice 1, and Ždala – Telek. The surface finds included fragments of smelting slag, undoubtedly associated with iron production, but also numerous potsherds from different historical periods. In order to define more clearly the character of the sites chosen after the analyses of surface finds, it was decided to undertake non-invasive geophysical research using the magnetic method. These are all areas with intensive agricultural activity, so it was expected that there would be poor preservation of archaeological remains and, therefore, weaker magnetic anomalies. This was a rather serious challenge for the archaeologically eloquent processing of magnetograms, but the existence of the remains of ironworks activities in situ below the plough zone was confirmed in several places, while the remains of ironworks activities are largely found in the arable layer. On the basis of all the characteristic magnetic anomalies, they managed to determine the approximate boundaries of the area of iron production activity. This geophysical survey is significant for the theoretical considerations of the correlation between the results of field surveys and geophysical research for improving the methodology of archaeological prospecting and for determining the measures for the protection of archaeological heritage, since it confirms the well-known fact that the archaeological remains on the primary location in agricultural areas with ever more intensive cultivation gradually disappear over time
Nuovi centri di potere nell'Istria altomedievale: scavi archeologici a Stancija Blek - Tarovec (Tar-Vabriga /Torre-Abrega)
The site of Stancija Blek -Tarovec (Tar-Vabriga\Torre-Abrega) was discovered at the beginnings of the 20th century during rural works. The main building is an impressive stone tower that controls the mouth of Quieto River, built over the older walls of a Roman farm. Excavations were carried out since 2008 when most of the settlement was investigated with architectural analysis and stratigraphic samples. These investigations analyzed the various phases suggesting a Byzantine watchtower over the abandoned Roman site. In 2016 and 2017 a new series of excavations has been undertaken by a team constituted by researcher of the Institute of Archaeology, the Museum of the Poreč territory and the University of Bologna. In this paper we will present the main results of the first two seasons of joint excavations pointing out the first phase of construction, documenting a continuity of use also during the 6th and 7th c. as a rural site, possibly linked to olive oil production. Between the 8th and 9th c. the settlement was surrounded by an enceinte wall that included the central tower, a chapel and various rooms of an élite site, surrounded by a wider village. This type of settlement is known elsewhere in early medieval Istria and future research will try to better define the steps of the transformation from rural Roman tradition site to a new fortified site and its function as a medieval center of power
Archaeological excavation on the Novo Selo Bunje site on the island of Brač, 2018
Kr.There were two campaigns in 2018: one in April/May and one in October. The excavations undertaken in the outbuilding area of the villa uncovered two large structures for the production of oil and wine with a press, ducts, and pools with vertical stratigraphy, and a storage space. South of the main wall of the villa, a small trench was made around an already known sarcophagus with a Christ monogram, revealing the associated architecture and an interesting stratigraphic situation. In the north part of the villa, there is the defined north wall of the main building. No architecture was found on its south side, indicating that the main building of the villa had a U-shaped ground plan, at least in the younger phase. The oldest walls of the villa were discovered in the residential part of the villa and were negated by the younger villa (probably in the 2nd century already), indicating the existence of a small outbuilding in the 1st century AD
Pax Romana between Burnum and Tilurium. Landscape of conflicts?
One of the last stages of the Delmataean-Pannonian rebellion took place in the area between Burnum and Tilurium between 6 and 9 AD. This revolt is known as the Bellum Batonianum, which was named after the two leaders of the rebellion. Suetonius’ words in Tiberius’s biography (Suet. Tib. 16.1) ...gravissimum omnium externorum bellorum post Punica, best attest to the nature of the conflict and how much it affected the Roman state. In the Roman province of Dalmatia, true peace, the so-called Pax Romana, could have begun only after overpowering the rebels. This peace was also very beneficial to Italy, which was secured by Dalmatian coastal routes. The benefit of peace was achieved by the Romans through the strategic deployment of legionary and auxiliary military units in the area between Burnum and Tilurium. This paper seeks to explore whether the spatial arrangement of units had a certain system and whether the spatial arrangement of auxiliary units during the 1st century had any significance in that system
Sotin Srednje polje – Archaeological excavation of multilayer site in Danube Basin in 2018
The archaeological excavations undertaken on the site of Srednje polje – Vašarište in Sotin in 2018 explored three trenches with a total surface area of 392.5 m2. Trenches 25, 26, and 27 included the area of a Dalj group cemetery from the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. The explored graves can be dated to phases II and III according to C. Metzner Nebelsick, i.e. to Ha B3 and Ha C1–C2. Roman remains were found in a part of a ditch that probably ran next to a road going along the Danube from Sotin towards Ilok. The discovered early medieval working area with a furnace shows that the settlement also grew towards the south-eastern part of Vašarište. The position of the explored trenches in Vašarište (2008, 2011–2018), considering the exploration area exceeding 5.300 m2, makes it possible to examine the stratigraphic layers from the Copper Age to the modern period. The finds from the site of Srednje polje – Vašarište are parts of a Copper Age settlement and pits from the Late Bronze Age. There are numerous Roman structures: the excavations uncovered pits from the 2nd century, remains of a Roman road, and a part of a cremation cemetery that stretched along the road. The same site was inhabited in the Early Middle Ages, when the infrastructure of the settlement on Vašarište included the foundations of regular rectangular structures, probably working areas, next to furnaces. There are fewer structures from the Late Middle Ages, but there are numerous modern ditches, which often damaged older complexes. Still, what makes the site on Vašarište stand out is the discovery of a large number of Dalj group cremation graves from the end of the Late Bronze Age and the beginning of the Early Iron Age places Sotin among the largest explored sites from that period in the middle Danube area
Research results of the La Tène culture cemetery at Zvonimirovo – Veliko polje in 2018
Pronađeni grobovi, na osnovi tipoloških karakteristika nalaza naoružanja kao i predmeta ženske nošnje i nakita, datiraju se u LT C2 stupanj (Mokronog IIb).The continuation of the rescue excavations on the site of Zvonimirovo – Veliko polje included the western slope of the central part of the elevation where there were cremation graves of the La Tène culture. The graves that stand out for their size and the depth of their pits are LT 122 and LT 125, with small piles of cremated bones lying next to ceramic vessels and weaponry items such as swords in scabbards, spears, and shield bosses. The excavations also uncovered two graves where the only weaponry item was a single spear. In female graves, aside from ceramic vessels, there were costume and jewellery items; a grave of particular notice is LT 123, damaged by ploughing, which contained the remains of three ceramic vessels and parts of a bronze belt of the “Hungarian” type with rectangular segments. The typological characteristics of the found weaponry and costume and jewellery items date the graves to LT C2 phase (Mokronog IIb)
Dolina Babine Grede – Research of the Late Bronze Age settlement in Sava Valley 2018
The Late Bronze Age settlement on the site of Babine Grede in Dolina stands on two greda (elevated positions) stretching along the River Sava in the east-west direction. The settlement is known from before on the basis of numerous collected surface finds of pottery fragments, and it was confirmed by a geomagnetic survey in 2014. Trench 1, in the eastern part of the western elevation, was excavated in 2015 and 2016. Archaeological research undertaken on the site of Babine Grede – Tukovi in 2018 was intended to determine the exact dating of the settlement standing on the eastern elevation. The discovered bronze and ceramic objects show that the settlement on the position of the eastern elevation was partly contemporaneous with the part of the settlement included in the excavations of trench 1 in the western part of the elevation, during Ha A2, that is, in the first half of the 11th century BC. Trench 2 contained even younger settlement horizons than the ones identified in trench 1. The results of the research from 2018 have changed the assumptions about the horizontal settlement stratigraphy in Dolina, that is, about how the Late Bronze Age settlement spread from east to west, where the settlement is the closest to the cemetery under the tumuli at the position of Glavičice. The research has proven that the settlement spread towards the east, too, on the higher places which were not directly exposed to sudden changes in the water level of the Sava. In future years, research will focus on locating the flat cemetery and considering the horizontal stratigraphy of the Late Bronze Age settlement on the site of Babine Grede
