Dolina na Savi: Excavations of the settlement in 2019 and an overview of the use of landscape along the River Sava in the Late Bronze Age
The Late Bronze Age settlement in Dolina at the location of Babine Grede stands on two elevated ridges lying along the course of the River Sava in the direction of west – east. The settlement is known on the basis of previously collected surface finds of potsherds and was confirmed by a geomagnetic survey conducted in 2014. Trench 1, located in the eastern part of the western ridge, was excavated in 2015 and 2016. The archaeological excavations of the location of Babine Grede – Tukovi in 2018 determined that the settlement on the east ridge was partly contemporary in Ha A2, i.e. in the first half of the 11th cent. BC. Trench 2 included younger horizons than those recorded in Trench 1. The excavations conducted in the spring of 2019 opened Trench 3, which is a smaller trench on the western part of the eastern ridge. Trench 3 is located south of the settlement on the western ridge. This trench was excavated with the aim of locating a flat cemetery, but it located a peripheral part of the settlement with a large buried structure. The new excavation results have supplemented the findings about the borders of the settlement and the directions of its expansion, as well as the assumptions about the position of the flat cemetery. According to the published findings, the Bronze Age settlement of Donja Dolina on the other side of the river was at least partly contemporary with the settlement at Babine Grede, and this fact raises a number of new questions about the specific use of landscape along the River Sava in the Late Bronze Age, especially during the younger phase of the Urnfield culture
IRON-AGE-DANUBE INTERREG DTP 2019 in Jalžabet: From research and preservation to the presentation and sustainable use of archaeological monuments, sites, and landscapes
During activities within “Monumentalized Early Iron Age Landscapes in the Danube river basin” (“Iron-Age-Danube” Interreg DTP), an international project involving the Institute of Archaeology from Zagreb along with partners from five Central European countries, the archaeological team of the Institute of Archaeology determined that one of the most famous prehistoric monuments in Croatia and one of the few giant unexplored prehistoric burial mounds in Central Europe had been robbed and severely damaged during the robbery. In winter 2017 already, Gomila in Jalžabet was the subject of emergency rescue excavations, which continued in 2018 and 2019. Such circumstances did not hinder the Institute of Archaeology in 2019 from implementing the obligations arising from the inclusion in the Iron-Age-Danube Interreg DTP project. The intense use of non-invasive analytical methods obtained much new information on the archaeological landscape in Jalžabet, but also on other archaeological sites and monuments throughout the micro-region. Within the project, an archaeological/tourist trail with bilingual inscriptions was set up along the Bistričak stream in 2019
Research results in Lovas (Western Syrmia) in 2019 – The Late Hallstatt and the Early La Tène cemetery
Tijekom ljeta 2019. godine, u okviru projekta FEMINE, proveden je nastavak probnih istraživanja kasnohalštatskoga i ranolatenskoga groblja u Lovasu u zapadnome Srijemu. During the summer of 2019, within the FEMINE project, trial excavations were continued in the Late Hallstatt and the Early La Tene cemetery in Lovas in western Syrmia. The cemetery is located in the very centre of the village, on a gentle elevation lying along the eastern edge of the loess plateau. It was discovered during the construction of the waterworks in the 1970s, when inhumation graves were found and dated to the younger phase of the Early Iron Age. The trial excavations conduced in 2018 discovered a biritual cemetery from the end of the Early Iron Age and the beginning of the Late Iron Age. When the excavations continued, they found more funerary complexes confirming the dates and layout of the cemetery. What particularly stood out were women’s inhumation graves richly furnished with items of costume and jewellery. Also, there was an exceptional find – the burial of a horse with iron bit of the form found in the area of the Lower Danube. The trial excavations in Lovas within the FEMINE project have confirmed the hypothesis that this is an exceptionally important site from the transition from the Early to Late Iron Age. Particular importance has been attached to the discovery of closed funerary complexes with female costume and jewellery items and the associated anthropological sample that will enable interdisciplinary bioarchaeological analyses
Clavi coctiles from Cibalae (Vinkovci)
Minor rescue archaeological excavations were conducted in 1990 in the area of the town of Vinkovci, on the position Šokadija, a part of an ancient residential building where a heating system was discovered. Detailed processing of the archaeological material found in this building revealed, among other finds, several fragments of hollow short ceramic cones of coarser quality. These objects are related to the elements of a specific way of construction of the wall part of the hypocaust, i.e. wall heating. Namely, there are several fragments of objects called clavi coctiles, which in Croatian literature are described as lesser-known types of ceramic spacers, used in thermal complexes throughout the Roman Empire

STOBREČ – BEDEMI: PREGLED KERAMIČKIH NALAZA S ISTRAŽIVANJA 2012. GODINE
Rab island settlement typology and organisation through a diachronic approach – First data from a multidisciplinary research
The collection of a wide range of data related to the settlement pattern of the island of Rab, carried out through six years of reconnaissance, geophysical prospection and trial trenching campaigns, allowed the definition of a clearer picture of the island’s settling from the Bronze age to early Modern times. This data set, used as basis for further analysis, indicated the need to further explore selected settlement sites in order to better define both their typology and their internal organisation. Consequently, during the 2019 campaign of the Archaeological topography of the island of Rab project, research intensified on two sites on the Lopar peninsula: Kaštelina cape and Podšilo bay. In parallel, further reconnaissance and geophysical prospecting was carried out both on Lopar and within Rab municipality, aiding in the definition of settled area spread and their features, which will help comparative period-specific analysis of the island’s settling. A pilot prospecting campaign carried out within the historic centre of Rab town allowed assessing the methods’ potential within the urban fabric of such a long-settled zone, but also gaining first wide-area data on its diachronic developments. Such data will also prove essential in understanding the inter-settlement relationships and the overall organisation of the island’s settlement pattern through time. Within the paper preliminary results of the research carried out at three sites is presented, i.e. an Iron Age hillfort, a Roman rural settlement and within the urban centre, which are, due to their representative features, indicative for proposing the development of settling on the island
A change of perspective on early Roman migrations in the Mediterranean. The case of the eastern Adriatic
Kr.Human migrations are an integral part of human history. They can be both a cause and a consequence, but also a catalyst for social change in an area. Until recently, migrations during the Roman conquests were poorly represented in the scientific discussion in relation to reports and comments on wars and other political events and figures. The same applies to conflicts on the eastern Adriatic coast. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to explore the traces and nature of migrations that occurred as a result of the Illyrian wars and the gradual imposition of Rome as the ruler of this area from the 3rd cent. BC until the middle of the 1st cent. BC
A contribution to the understanding of the topography of Sotin (Cornacum) in Roman period
Sotin is a site on a high loess plateau along the Danube and the first Roman military fort downstream from Teutoburgium (Dalj) on the Danube limes. Traces of Roman Sotin have been known since the 19th century, when the first finds began to arrive in museums, primarily in the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb, then the National Museum. Numerous finds from excavations and field surveys were collected over the decades. Rescue excavations, usually during infrastructure works, were performed by the employees of Vukovar Municipal Museum. From 2008 to 2018, the Institute of Archaeology undertook targeted excavations in the area of Sotin to locate a Bronze and Iron Age cemetery. Over a period of several years, excavations on seven different locations uncovered the traces of ancient Sotin and other finds. This paper presents the preliminary topographic findings on Sotin in Roman times
