Hitna zaštitna istraživanja jalžabetske Gomile i cijeloga arheološkog krajolika uz potok Bistričak odlično se uklapaju u podtemu A4: Ritual unutar Strategije znanstvene djelatnosti Instituta. In September 2017, during the implementation of “Monumentalized Early Iron Age Landscapes in the Danube river basin”, an international project involving the Institute of Archaeology from Zagreb along with partners from five Central European countries, the archaeological team of the Institute of Archaeology determined that one of the most famous prehistoric monuments in Croatia and one of the few giant unexplored prehistoric burial mounds in Central Europe had been robbed and severely damaged during the robbery. At the time of writing, the police investigation is complete and the suspects in this serious culturocide are awaiting the start of the trial. Because of the danger of further damage to this archaeological monument, the intervention funds of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia were used by the Institute of Archaeology to start emergency rescue excavations at Gomila in Jalžabet in early winter 2017 already, and to continue them in 2018 and 2019. The excavations in the structure of the Gomila grave chamber and the work on the dromos were continued during 2019. A small trench was opened on the eastern slope of the large tumulus, and flotation and sieving were continued of the archaeological layers from the excavations. The urgent rescue excavations of the Jalžabet Gomila and the entire archaeological landscape along the Bistričak stream fit perfectly into the sub-theme A4: Ritual within the Strategy of the Scientific Activity of the Institute

The site of AN 2 Beli Manastir – Popova Zemlja was excavated in 2014 and 2015 on the route of the future section of the A5 motorway from Osijek to Beli Manastir. Two horizons were identified, one from antiquity and the other from prehistory. The horizon of antiquity, dated to the 3rd century, is associated with two kilns for producing bricks, a child’s grave, and buried pits with finds. The prehistoric horizon contains numerous buried pits and ditches, particularly large-size pit structures, as well as graves with the dead in a curled position and a ditch regulating the water flow, which dominates the space because of its size and spread. On the basis of analogue examples of fragments of pottery and ornaments and the results of the analysis of skeleton remains by the 14C method, prehistoric life at the site went on through the Neolithic and Eneolithic cultures

U drugoj etapi projekta (2018. – 2020.) pristupilo se detaljnijoj obradi keramike i zidnoga oslika. Preliminarna analiza pokazala je nove vrijedne rezultate koji, s jedne strane, pokazuju potpuno novu kronologiju nastanjivanja dijela povijesne jezgre Grada koji se razvija uz današnju luku, a s druge cjelovitiju sliku faza opremanja, a time i izgradnje složenoga kompleksa „starih dubrovačkih katedrala“ istraženoga u podzemlju barokne prvostolnice i Bunićeve poljane. Uz rezultate obrade keramike i ulomaka zidnih slika, donose se i preliminarni rezultati obrade kamene plastike, s osobitim naglaskom na najranijem, kasnoantičkom (ranokršćanskom) sloju. The research and educational project Discovering the Old Dubrovnik Cathedrals was launched in 2015. Its activities were primarily focused on the expert and scientific study of movable monuments and archaeological finds originating from the site under the Baroque Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and in the nearby square of Bunićeva Poljana in Dubrovnik. All the materials were the results of the archaeological excavations of the site undertaken after the earthquake of 1979; in the long subsequent period of twenty-seven years, they had been largely unstudied and unpublished. In the first phase of the project (2015–2017), primarily because of the quantity of materials and the poor condition in which they were found, the activities focused on their rescue and sorting before engaging in any expert studies. The primary activity was the study of stone monuments and fragments of glass, while other materials (fragments of wall paintings and metal) were unified and documented, or just catalogued and properly stored (pottery fragments). In the second phase of the project (2018–2020), pottery and ceramics and fragments of wall paintings were studied in more detail. The preliminary analysis resulted in valuable new insights: on one hand, it provided a whole new chronology of habitation for the part of the historic center of Dubrovnik that developed along today’s port; on the other, it painted a more comprehensive picture of the furnishing and building phases of „the old Dubrovnik cathedrals“, the elaborate complex explored under the Baroque cathedral and in the square of Bunićeva Poljana. Along with the results of studying pottery and fragments of wall paintings, there are also the preliminary results of of the analysis of stone monuments, with a special emphasis on the earliest layer from late antiquity (early Christianity)

The Roman Food System in Southern Pannonia (Croatia) From the 1st–4th Century A.D.

    Get PDF
Food is an excellent medium through which to explore trade, economies, migration and landscapes, yet little is known about food production and consumption in the Roman province of Pannonia. Here we explore the current evidence for agriculture, trade and diet in southern Pannonia (modern day eastern Croatia) and what this may say about life in the region. The influx of new ‘exotic’ foods and technologies had a profound influence on this region. The limited archaeobotanical data suggests complex trade and local agricultural systems that allowed large towns such as Mursa, Cibalae and Siscia to gain access to a wide range of food items. The large quantities of pottery found not only helps us understand traded goods but also the local tastes and fashions, as well as to infer the types of dishes that could have been cooked. More evidence is clearly needed in this region but what we can see so far is that urban centres along the Danube Limes were firmly integrated within the wider Roman food system and that diets were probably quite varied for many who lived there

Total lipid extraction from archaeological samples from roman sites on the island of Brač, Croatia

The island of Brač is situated in the vicinity of Roman Salona, where over 90 Roman archaeological sites have been documented in different surveys. During the archaeological surveys conducted from 2003 to 2005, some of the larger sites were visited, and samples of amphorae were collected as part of the study Topography of Roman Villas on the Island of Brač and from one rescue excavation. In this research, 16 Roman amphorae were analysed. These amphorae were found in a variety of contexts in 13 main areas, and typological analyses and bibliography lead us to believe that, in the amphorae found, oil and fish sauce (salsamenta) were transported and/or kept. Aim of this research was to determine the function of amphorae as containers of oil and/or fish sauces, analysis of organic-residue content was performed. The residue analysis did not produce definitive answers about the exact oil stored in any particular amphora. Comparing ratios of the saturated and unsaturated fatty acids identified, it is possible to distinguish maritime- origin from vegetable-origin residue with greater certainty. This information is important to help shed some light on the Roman economy and trade routes on the Adriatic coast and further on the way to Africa. In this respect, it is especially satisfying that the residue profiles of samples are in line with what was predicted from typological analyses and bibliography (ethnographic reports). To understand Ancient habits of feeding it is important to continue research on amphora samples from the island of Brač

The assortment of ceramic building materials from the pottery workshop of Sextus Me(u)tillius Maximus at Crikvenica (Croatia)

Iako je i dalje u znatnoj količini prisutan uvozni materijal, nedavno locirane i utvrđene lokalne radionice omogućavaju smještanje njihovih proizvoda u tehnološke i gospodarske okvire. Detaljnom analizom asortimana građevinske keramike (nadalje GK) radionice Sexta Me(u)tillia Maxima utvrđene u Crikvenici (sjeveroistočni Jadran), moguće je razlučiti metode oblikovanja i proizvodnu tehnologiju, dok njihova distribucija i uloga unutar ruralnoga gospodarstva govore o važnosti ovih proizvoda za regionalno tržište GK. U ovome ćemo se radu posebno osvrnuti na potonje aspekte smještajući ih unutar šire rasprave o pokretanju proizvodnje, organizaciji ruralnih posjeda i prijenosu znanja i tehnologija kroz prihvaćanje „rimskih” arhitektonskih rješenja.Roman building materials, especially brick and tiles (tegulae and imbex) marked a new era in the architecture of Roman Dalmatia. While imported materials seem to still form the bulk of the evidence, recently identified and definitely located local productions provide the possibility to place these products within a technological and economical framework. The in-depth analysis of the array of ceramic building materials (CBM) of the workshop of Sextus Me(u)tillius Maximus in Crikvenica (north-eastern Adriatic) evidences their forming methods and production technology, while some distribution aspects and their role within the rural economy indicate their relevance within the regional CBM market. This paper will highlight such aspects and place them within a wider debate on the onset of production, the organisation of rural property, and the transmission of technology and knowledge through the adoption of “Roman style” architectural solutions

Contribution to the topography of the territory of the colony Aelia Mursa within the daily movement zone (cotidianus excursus)

The paper presents the results obtained by reconnaissance and analysis of published data on the presence of Roman rural settlements around Mursa. The processing of the new data took into account a radius of approximately 14 km from the centre of Mursa and within the ager. The zone of excavations was chosen to try to determine to what extent the suburbium of the colony Aelia Mursa matches the ideal of the man of antiquity who mostly lived in the countryside: to be able to travel to town and come back home on foot or by vehicle in a single day
