The paper reports the results of the first campaign of excavations at the Church of the Holy Cross near Stancija Blek (Tar-Vabriga – Torre-Abrega municipality, Istria), which is close to the multiphase settlement of Old Tar. A trial trench behind the rear wall of the church and along its southern perimetral wall revealed an earlier building and one grave. Though the uncovered remains are scanty, several distinct architectural designs allow us to propose a first typological determination of the newly discovered structure and shed light on subsequent development at the site. Part of this year’s analytical research was supported by the Polish National Science Center (Narodowe Centrum Nauki), grant ID: 478202, NO. 2020/37/B/ HS3/02458.U radu se donose rezultati prve kampanje istraživanja uz crkvu sv. Križa nedaleko Stancije Blek (Općina Tar-Vabriga – Torre-Abrega, Istra), odnosno nedaleko multifaznoga lokaliteta Stari Tar. Probnim sondiranjem uz začelje i južni zid crkve utvrđeno je postojanje ranije građevine i jedan grob. Iako su otkriveni ostaci za sada oskudni, nekoliko specifičnih arhitektonskih značajki omogućava iznošenje nekoliko prijedloga tipološkoga smještanja novootkrivene građevine, ali i bolje razumijevanje daljnjega razvoja lokaliteta. Dio ovogodišnjih analiza financijski je podržao Poljski Nacionalni znanstveni centar (Narodowe Centrum Nauki), grant ID: 478202, NO. 2020/37/B/HS3/02458

Nature of the deposit and properties of bog iron ore at the Kalinovac – Hrastova Greda: a model for the analysis of ore exploitation and use in archaeological periods

    Get PDF
Potonje istraživanje ukazuje i na tehnološku prilagodbu u prošlosti, preradu ruda uvjetovanu prirodnim preduvjetima, prvenstveno promjenjivim svojstvima močvarnih željeznih ruda i karakterom ležišta. Pri analizi se koriste podaci dobiveni površinskim terenskim pregledom, geoarheološkim sondiranjem, geoprostornim analizama, eksperimentalnim testiranjem i mineraloškim (XRD) te kemijskim analizama (ICP – AES) uzoraka razvojnih faza rude i zgure dobivene kroz postupak eksperimentalnoga taljenja. The fundamental raw material used for iron production in the Podravina region during late antiquity and the early Middle Ages was the bog iron ore. Analysis of ore properties and deposits can contribute to the understanding of natural mechanisms that conditioned the exploitation and use of ores in the past. However, locating the deposits is challenging, due to the possibility of full exploitation, degradation and inhibited regeneration or development caused primarily by human activities and impact on the environment. In the modern landscape of Podravina, the Kalinovac – Hrastova Greda 1 – 3 position had the highest potential for ore development and the only, partially destroyed ore deposit. Based on its analysis, a model of the formation mechanism, physiognomy and deposit positioning in Podravina is proposed and methods of exploitation and the potential area of the deposit occurrence in relation to the positions of archaeological sites with iron production remains are discussed. To analyse the technological usability of ore samples with similar properties from the archaeological context, experimental testing of the smelting process was performed with the Kalinovac ore. Based on the results, the factors that could inhibit the production of iron blooms are explained. The latter research also implies a past technological adaptation, ore dressing conditioned by natural preconditions, primarily the variable properties of bog iron ores and the nature of the deposits. Data from surface field survey, geoarchaeological probing, geospatial analysis, experimental testing and mineralogical (XRD) and chemical analysis (ICP – AES) of samples of ore development stages and slag obtained through experimental smelting are used in the analysis

Distribution possibilities and transport infrastructure in northern Dalmatia’s pottery workshops: evidence and interpretations

    No full text
Transport infrastructure has been recognised as a fundamental feature in the choice of location for setup of craft activities. In fact, as part of the production cycle it allows resources to be brought in and products to be dispatched to the market. Thus, it was a key feature in the establishment of Roman pottery and ceramics workshops as well, securing, at least in rural settings, communication within the wider estate. This paper draws on results of recent research on pottery production sites in coastal and insular settings of the Roman province of Dalmatia with the aim to discuss availability and typology of transport infrastructure and better understand the mechanism of raw materials sourcing, production organisation and products marketing. On the bases of various evidence, including actual remains as well as other indirect data, and analogies with similar sites of the Roman world, the role of transport infrastructure and its features can shed light on not only on craft activities, but also on rural properties organisation and their role in the regional economy

Miniature Iron Age vessels from the shrine in Vilina Cave

The paper examines the miniature votive vessels from the Illyrian shrine in Vilina Cave above the source of the Ombla near Dubrovnik. The excavations done by Dubrovnik Museums in 2014 and 2015 found a total of at least 45 miniature vessels of at least six different shapes. They all belong to local, hand-made prehistoric pottery. They are mostly low quality pottery, with coarse fabric and abundant inclusions of calcite and limestone. The shapes and decorations of some miniature vessels imitate the original normal-sized vessels, making it possible to date them on the basis of their typological and formal characteristics. However, most miniature vessels have very simple shapes and no decorations, so they can be dated only indirectly, by considering them in the context of the shrine, where all the other finds have been dated to the end of the 5th and the entire 4th century BC. The miniature vessels examined in this paper can be compared to other sites with a similar context and function, primarily the Iron Age shrines in the wider area, Greece, and the Italian peninsula
