The Diversity in Creating a New Dream: A Black Man’s Journey from Sports to Human Resources
Issues of diversity explores a variety of social, political, and educational issues as it relates to the education of individuals in a culturally diverse world. Through the process of reading, reflection, and discussion, individuals are able to learn about trends and challenges individuals face related to their experiences and cultural backgrounds. This article explores the author’s narrative interview with Cameron (a pseudonym) as he discusses his life experiences on his path as an athlete and as a professional. This article explores Cameron’s experiences and obstacles he overcame to transition from athletics to the workforce. Additionally, this article investigates the issues of diversity as it relates to stereotypes he had to endure as a Black Man and athlete. The role of stakeholders: Implications for continuous improvement in principal preparation
Research conducted in partnership with the Wallace Foundation and the Education Development Center revealed the importance of school principals on the success of student achievement and attendance, as well as on teacher efficacy and retention. The implications of this research reveal the importance of stronger and more focused principal preparation programs. Therefore, the Wallace Foundation established a continuous improvement process that engages teams of program faculty and stakeholders in conducting evidence-based assessments of program quality. In this article, three programs document their experiences with the self-study process. Readers will gain a deeper appreciation for the collaborative role that stakeholders play in shaping and improving the quality of programs in higher education institutions
Differences in Resilience and Mental Health Symptoms Among US First Responders With Secure and Insecure Attachment
Objective: This observational study aimed to determine whether attachment style predicted first responders\u27 mental health and resilience. Method: Data were from a treatment-seeking sample of first responders (N = 237). Each participant completed six assessments measuring attachment, resilience, generalized anxiety, depression, suicidality, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Results: On the attachment assessment, 25.3%were categorized as secure, 19.0%as dismissive, 25.3% as preoccupied, and 30.4% as fearfully attached. As predicted, securely attached participants had the lowest scores for generalized anxiety, depression, suicidality, and posttraumatic stress disorder and the highest scores on the resiliency measure, followed by dismissive, preoccupied, and fearfully attached participants. Limitations: These data are cross-sectional and causality cannot be inferred. Conclusions: Results highlight the importance of the study of attachment to psychotherapy and mental health treatment with first responders
Affective Depression Mediates PTSD to Suicide in a Sample of Treatment-Seeking First Responders
Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the associations of comorbid
posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), affective or somatic depression, and
suicide among first responders (FRs). Method: We used baseline data from
FRs (N = 232) who sought services at a nonprofit mental health agency specializing
in treating trauma exposed FRs. We conducted two PROCESS simple
mediation models with PTSD as the predictor, affective depression and somatic
depression as the mediators, and suicidality as the dependent variable.
Results: Affective depression significantly mediated the relationship between
PTSD and suicidality, whereas somatic depression did not. The direct effect of
PTSD on suicidality was not significant. Limitations: These data are
cross-sectional and should be followed up with longitudinal analyses across
the course of treatment. Conclusions: To reduce suicide risk, it is recommended
that clinicians target affective depression instead of PTSD symptoms
Characterization of Molecular Content, Cytotoxicity, and Anti-Inflammatory Activity of Extractions from Eupatorium serotinum
Inflammation is a complex and varied immune response which can be expressed chronically or as a temporary reaction to foreign invaders. Symptoms of inflammation include swelling, pain, soreness, and difficulty of motion. Recently, the effect of sesquiterpene lactones such as Helenalin from Arnica montana have been studied for their anti-inflammatory properties. In this study, we identified and harvested samples of Eupatorium serotinum, a plant historically used by Native Americans to treat a variety of medical illnesses. Crude extracts of the leaves, flowers, roots, and stems were prepared by ethanol extraction. The cytotoxicity of the different extracts on HEK293 cells was determined by a cell death assay and a cell viability assay. HPLC was performed on the extracts and compared with a Helenalin standard to determine the possible presence of sesquiterpene lactones isolated from E. serotinum. Finally, an inflammation assay was performed on TNF-α stimulated HEK293 cells pretreated with the extract, and the total RNA was extracted and sequenced to study the differential gene expression
Detection of Carbamazepine, Diclofenac, and Ketoprofen via a SPE-HPLC-PDA Method in a Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant in East Texas, USA
Increased demand for water reuse, recycling and reclamation heightens the need for improvements in the design of wastewater treatment plants that minimize or remove toxic pollutants or their metabolites. In this study, solid-phase extraction (SPE) technique utilizing C-18 cartridge was used for separation of three commonly used pharmaceuticals, namely, carbamazepine (CBZ), diclofenac (DF), and ketoprofen (KT) in wastewater samples. High performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array detector (HPLC-PDA) method was used for detection of CBZ, DF, and KT along the treatment stages (aeration, clarifier, raw activated sludge (RAS), chlorine contact chamber (CCC), and sulfur dioxide chamber) from Nacogdoches wastewater treatment plant (NWWTP), in East Texas, USA. Highest concentrations were found in the RAS followed by influent aeration stage. Pharmaceutical concentrations detected from the influent or RAS samples were 2.115 x10-3 mg/L, 8.95 x10-4 mg/L and 8.55 x10-4 mg/L for CBZ, KT and DF, respectively. Highest detected total concentrations of pharmaceuticals were: carbamazepine (1.285 – 2.117 µg/L), diclofenac (0.600 – 0.865 µg/L), and ketoprofen (0.815 – 0.885 µg/L). The calculated % removal efficiencies along the treatment stages follow the order; CBZ: RAS \u3e SO2 \u3e clarifier ≈ aeration \u3e CCC; KT: RAS \u3e SO2 \u3e aeration \u3e CCC \u3e clarifier; DF: RAS ≈ aeration ≈ CCC \u3e clarifier \u3e SO2 . Determined removal efficiencies follow the order carbamazepine (~ 39.2%) \u3e diclofenac (~ 30.6%) \u3e ketoprofen (~8.8%). Removal efficiencies of pharmaceuticals in the NWWTP may be affected by the human body, transition through activated wastewater treatment processes, and their metabolism and/or usage by humans
The Rise of Critical Race Theory: Current Perspectives and Policies on CRT in Education
In this policy brief on Critical Race Theory (CRT), I operationalize the theory, trace its origins in legal scholarship, discuss its rise within the field of education, and highlight current policies that have responded to this rise. While many see CRT as a helpful lens to view seemingly unnoticeable manifestations of oppression and injustice, others view the use of the construct as divisive, unnecessary, and detrimental to teaching and learning. After detailing the discourses on either side of this debate, I conclude this brief by drawing on Kumashiro’s (2004) notion of teaching for discomfort and the approach of action civics to envision the meaningful use of CRT in schools
Reservoir Characterization of the Utica Shale Play Using Well Log Data in Columbiana, Ohio
The Ordovician Utica shale play is rapidly developing throughout the Appalachian Basin. The play is a mixed carbonate-siliciclastic system that grades from primarily carbonates at its base in the Lexington/Trenton limestones into primarily shale within the Utica shale. As of January 2021, it is the third highest-producing dry shale gas play in the contiguous U.S., although it is known to produce wet gas and oil in various parts of the basin. In addition to being an unconventional reservoir, the Utica shale, an informal unit in Ohio where the main fairway is located, is a known source rock for much of the Paleozoic strata across the Appalachian Basin, including multiple lower Paleozoic sandstone and carbonate units. Although some data are available on this play, models that scale from well site through basin are not publicly available. The objective of this research was the production of a petrophysical reservoir model capable of reflecting the geology, geomechanics, and geochemistry across Columbian County, Ohio, and the surrounding area as a part of a larger effort to create a scalable model that will encompass the entire Utica shale Play. Well logs, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and total organic carbon (TOC) data were utilized to create a model in Interactive Petrophysics (I.P.) 2021. Seismic and core data within the area is sparse, therefore the Schmoker and Hester method was utilized to estimate TOC from the readily available well logs and then calibrated with the core data available.
Lithology changes in the study area appear to correlate with known fault trends, structural highs correlating with carbonate-rich siliciclastics or thickened carbonate platform, and siliciclastic poor or thin shale intervals. Areas with increased clay content are adjacent to these structural highs and correlate with increased levels of TOC, creating localized sub-basins, or sweet spots, that are localized rather than extensive throughout the area. These appear to be depositional lows, potentially influenced by Proterozoic basement features and faults that would have been reactivated during the Taconic Orogeny. This study expands the current knowledge regarding the Utica shale by modeling the relationship between lithology, eustatic sea level changes, prevalence of organic material, and basin subsidence. These data will assist oil and gas developers with future hydrocarbon exploration and production
