Developing the Nonprofit Theatre: Building a Foundation for the Emerging Theatre Company
Get PDFThis paper aims to guide entrepreneurial theatre artists in beginning a nonprofit theatre arts venture. It will provide an in-depth analysis of the foundations required to begin a nonprofit theatre organization and analyze the need for expanding upon traditional structures and styles. Incorporating evidence and research from relevant literature, coursework, and market data as well as analysis of a strategic plan for The Common Theatre Company, this paper finds that non-profit theatre companies can be positively served by developing unique products and services and a nontraditional governance model as an extension of the foundational needs of a nonprofit organization. The traditional theatre venture generally includes a mission revolving around production content, follows a basic season, exclusively offers plays or musicals in its programming, and is governed by a top-down Board of Directors structure. The Common Theatre Company represents a new approach to this typical model offering diverse programming, a unique community partnership angle, and a collaborative governance structure. In a market geared toward non-arts industries that finds audiences across sectors overstimulated and oversaturated, small nonprofit theatres need more resources geared toward them. This paper is meant to serve as a blueprint for the emerging theatre company and a guide to finding unique ways to stand out in any market
Isolation and Characterization of Bacteriophages from Fish tank Samples
Get PDFBacteriophages (phages) are viral obligate intracellular parasites that infect bacteria. Research has been carried out on alternative treatment plans for bacterial infections due to the increase in antibiotic resistance. Phages have been proposed as an alternative to antibiotics. This research focused on the isolation and characterization of bacteria from small aquariums. A total of 42 bacterial isolates were isolated from seven different fish tank water samples and were tested to determine if they possessed phages. Spot plaque assay revealed presence of lytic phage for only one of the isolated bacterial strains, which was determined to belong to Enterobacteriaceae family based on the 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing. The phage isolated in spot plaque assay was successfully propagated in liquid bacterial culture. TEM showed that the isolated phage had a complex capsid and according to its morphology probably belongs to the family Myoviridae. Analysis of phage’s genetic material indicated that it is a DNA phage with its highest DNA sequence similarity with previously described phages of bacteria from Enterobacteriaceae. Further analysis is required to determine if this phage belongs to a previously described phage species or not and if it has potential in the treatment of enterobacterial infections
Analysis of the Appointment, Experiences, and Job Satisfaction of Leaders in Large Schools of Music
Get PDFLittle is known about how male and female middle-level leaders in schools of music come into their leadership roles, how they distribute their time among responsibilities, and how the distribution of time or other factors impact their professional identities, creative activities, and job satisfaction. Quantitative, self-reported survey data collected on music leaders in large schools of music and qualitative data collected from a panel discussion with representative leaders were used to analyze the five research questions in this explanatory sequential mixed-methods study. An analysis of the relationship between the two variables, gender and method of entry, showed a weak association. Analyses of the method of entry and the groups within the distribution of time variable showed a negative correlation between those appointed by administration and time spent on teaching, research/creative activities, and service. A positive correlation between fundraising and administrative duties was found. However, correlations with administrative duties and service were negligible. Responsibilities and how leaders spend their time may vary based on their title, organizational structure, and job expectations. Music leaders value continued opportunities to engage in research and creative activities. These findings will benefit future music leaders and current music administrators in higher education. Future recommendations are discussed
University School Training Model Consultation Practica: Dismantling Anti-Black Racism with Predominately White Educators to Improve School, Family, Community Collaborations with Black Families and Community Stakeholders
Get PDFThis article outlines a consultation case study facilitated in an urban elementary school through the University School Training Model (USTM) (Colles et al., 2019; Morris et al., 2016). The USTM is a collaboration between an APA accredited Counseling Psychology doctoral program and an urban school district to provide racially responsive counseling and consulting services and graduate level training. The case study details a consultation practica to improve school, family, and community collaborations in an urban elementary school with predominantly Black stakeholders and a predominantly White female school staff. The introduction, background, and self-evaluation of the consultation process are reviewed. Project demographics, situation background, consultee role, and problem statement are then addressed. The goals, intervention grids, evaluation, termination, and post consultation follow-up are discussed. The transformative impact of consulting with urban school leaders to dismantle educational practices that uphold racism, white supremacy, and anti-Blackness that inhibit school, family, and community collaborations is highlighted
