Making Malice Musical: Verdi’s Compositional Journey Through the Eyes of Six Villains

    Get PDF
Giuseppe Verdi is a pillar of the operatic world and had a profound impact on the evolution of the art form. From a rudimentary beginning, he developed over time from a popular creator of operas in the solita forma style of 19th century Italy into a master craftsman of combining music, text, and theatrical drama. Verdi utilized the popular compositional formal convention of solita forma to begin his career. Over time he evolved beyond its boundaries and shifted his focus to the holistic theatrical presentation of the drama. Much has been written about this evolution through analysis of Verdi’s most famous operas and their arias. This paper instead focuses on the arias of six villains, and through those arias, examines Verdi’s evolution from solita forma to the through–composed, free style he adopted near the end of his life. His desire to provide theatrically suitable accompaniment for the malicious intentions and actions of his villains, and his need to tell a complete theatrical musical story, both influenced his choices in compositional form and led him eventually to leave solita forma behind entirely

EARLY INSTRUMENTS IN 21ST CENTURY COMPOSITION AND AN ORIGINAL COMPOSITION FOR SAXOPHONES AND VIOLS

    Get PDF
Composers continually seek new timbres and sonorities to bend to their will. The early music revival of the twentieth century has resurrected dozens of instruments that have gone unutilized in contemporary composition for centuries. The historically-informed-performance movement has now evolved to a point where early instruments and period performance techniques can add extraordinary new characters to twenty-first century compositions. This thesis explores how composers effectively utilize early instruments like the viola da gamba, harpsichord, lute, and recorder in their compositions. The document also contains interview transcripts from eight composers and performers, including Nico Muhly, Liam Byrne, Martha Bishop, David Loeb, Yukimi Kambe, Sarah Mead, Heather Spence, and Lisa Terry. Finally, my original composition for an octet of four saxophones and four viola da gambas realizes the research and implements the advice sought during the interview process and is accompanied by an analysis of core concepts

The Race, Social Class, and Place-Based Gap in Rural Turnaround Policy: A Policy Brief

    Get PDF
Abstract: For teachers, leaders, and policymakers To understand the factors that contribute to the successful implementation of rural school turnaround, there is a need to understand how turnaround leadership implements school improvement in different types of communities of color (Wright, 2019). Studies examining the implications of school turnaround in minoritized educational contexts have solely examined urban school contexts to exclude rural contexts (Mette & Stanoch, 2018). Rural schools of color undergoing turnaround face the fundamental unique educational challenges of rural schools and the education debt that has accumulated over time for people of color (Ladson-Billings, 2006). There is a greater need to understand how school turnaround is enacted and embodied by rural Title I school communities of color. Black scholars studying rural education are conceptualizing the education debt for rural people of color to build the transformational capacity of the education debt present in schooling in rural communities of color (Harris, 2021; Grant-Panting, 2021; Nichols, 2021; Nino & Perez-Diaz., 2021). The implications of the current trends in rural education research suggest that the sociopolitical contingencies that intersect with rural experience must be studied. In particular, future research could collect oral histories of rural school communities of color to understand their schooling experiences to address issues like resources, teacher quality, and educational debt

Restrictions on Topological Symmetry Groups of the 3-Rung Möbius Ladder on the Torus

    No full text
In this work, we discuss properties of the 3-rung Möbius ladder embedded on the surface of a torus. We present proofs on restrictions of topological symmetry groups of the Möbius ladder with and without the assumption of preserving orientation. Specifically, we show that Z2 is the only possible non-trivial orientation-preserving topological symmetry groups, and also that Z2 and D2 are the only possible nontrivial topological symmetry groups

Policy Brief: Exploring Response to Intervention’s Effectiveness with Students of Color

    Get PDF
This policy analysis explores the effectiveness of Response to Intervention (RTI) at diminishing racial disproportionalities in special education. It includes a brief review of the legislative context of RTI. It also examines one contributing factor to the effectiveness of RTI—educator ideologies. The analysis concludes with implications and future policy directions

Student, Teacher, Mother, Wife: A Constant Learner’s Education and Call to Action

The purpose of this reflective single case study was to explore one woman’s perspectives on learning from childhood to adulthood. Though friendly, gregarious, and well-liked, she never quite fit in with others. Well into adulthood, she realized she was gay, prompting her to reflect on her formal and informal education, professional experiences, and personal relationships. Qualitative data were collected via semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Freire’s (1970) conscientization as an underlying framework. The subject openly discussed her struggles, successes, and worldview, candidly reflecting on where the system failed her and how she hopes educators will seize opportunities to learn alongside students left behind by heterocisnormative hegemony in the classroom

A Strategic Exploration of Bilingual Education Policy: An Interpretive Policy Analysis

    Get PDF
Language diversity in the United States has always been part of its history, yet policy and funding have not always promoted bilingualism or multiculturalism. Throughout the history of bilingual education, administrators, politicians, and policymakers have changed their preferences and practices in response to trends and ideological shifts (Crawford, 2004). Even with a plethora of research regarding the benefits of bilingualism and biliteracy in support of bilingual education (Baker, 201; Camilleri, 1996; Fuh Suh, 2022; Goodman, & Tastanbek, 2021; McCarty, 1980), the literature on bilingual policy exclusively focuses on the use of two languages as languages of instruction with the sole purpose of eventually transitioning fully to English. The purpose of this paper is to provide a strategic analysis of discourse on language policy

Study Away with SFA: The Opportunity for Accessible Cross Cultural Learning

    Get PDF
Study Away was proposed by our professor as an accessible alternative to traditional study abroad programs. Accessible because it is more affordable and it opens up this cross cultural opportunity to students who may be undocumented. We traveled the country for five weeks in a Mercedes sprinter van exploring places such as Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Albuquerque, the Great Lakes, New York City, the Appalachian Mountains, and New Orleans to name a few. Throughout, we engaged in critical conversations and opportunities for self-growth. This presentation will share our perspectives regarding study away as it compares to study abroad

The Great Gatsby Graphic Novel’s Illustrator Aya Morton’s Admiration of Vincent Van Gogh and Company

I chose to study F. Scott Fitzgerald\u27s The Great Gatsby alongside Aya Morton\u27s recent graphic novel adaptation. As scholars have noted the influence that modernist art had on Fitzgerald\u27s writing style, I explored the influence that — impressionists and post-impressionist artists — had on Morton\u27s renditions
