Bridging the Cultural Divide: Learning with Kayla

    Get PDF
Originally written as a doctoral paper in the fall of 2018 when the researcher was a doctoral student in Baylor University’s School of Education program, this article is an account of a single-subject case study as a mini-research project for a course titled EDC 5392, or Issues in Diversity. As a teacher, the doctoral student and emerging researcher chose one of her students as the subject for this study. This article aims to share the learning of an emerging adult scholar throughout the research process and to contribute an example of a teacher building critical consciousness around multicultural and anti-bias/antiracist education practices

A molecular chemodosimeter to probe “closed shell” ions in kidney cells

    No full text
Two quinidine-functionalized coumarin molecular probes have been synthesized and have been found to bind metal cations (Cd2+, Co2+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Hg2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+) with high affinity in organic–aqueous media (DMSO–HEPES). The chemodosimeters coordinate with the Zn2+ ions in a two-to-one ratio (molecular probe : Zn2+) with a log β of 10.0 M−2. Upon the addition of the closed-shell metal ions studied, a fluorescence turn-on via an excimer formation is seen at 542 nm due to the quinaldine moiety adopting a syn arrangement when coordinated to the metal Zn2+ ions. Confocal microscopy monitored free Zn2+ ions in the Human Embryonic Kidney cell line HEK293 by coordinating with the chemodosimter

Positive Body Image-related Strategies in Children\u27s Picturebooks

    No full text
Positive body image, an important perspective in the research literature on body image with adolescents and adults, has become a popular theme in children’s picturebooks. This is promising and warrants researchers’ attention. Thus this study examined body image-related strategies in 50 children’s picturebooks, focusing on body image through content analysis based on the lens of positive body image perspectives. Four main strategies for promoting positive body image emerged from the study including body appreciation, inner positivity, perceived support for protective filtering, and adaptive body investment. This study also examined how these strategies were presented for promoting positive body image through text and pictures. This study fills a gap in the current literature regarding positive body image-related messages for young children. Findings clarify how children’s picturebooks can be used to encourage young children to love, respect, and take care of their own and others’ bodies physically and mentally

Substance Misuse Intervention Proposal for Harrison County

    Get PDF
Background: A report produced in 2021 analyzing substance misuse in Panola, Harrison, and Gregg counties emphasized the need for intervention on substance misuse in the area. We decided to create a therapeutic community program to be implemented in the Harrison County Jail to target the specific need of the inmates with substance charges and Harrison County as a whole. Our approach was guided by the Community Partnership Model

    Quality of Virtual K-12 Education

    Get PDF
The focus of this study was an examination of the presence or absence of associations between operator status, graduation rate, student-teacher ratio, and school performance among online K- 12 schools across a five-year period. This study is timely and significant due to the proliferation of virtual school settings leading up to the COVID-19 pandemic and concerns about virtual school quality and performance. Secondary data from the National Education Policy Center was used to perform Chi-Square Tests for Association among various factors impacting K-12 school quality and performance. We tested for associations between and among school types, operator status, and time, with student-teacher ratio, the percentage of schools with acceptable performance ratings, and graduation rates as our measures of frequency. Statistical analysis of these variables showed no significant association between the type of school and school year with student-teacher ratio and graduation rates as the measures of frequency. There was also no significant association between the operator status and school year when compared against graduation rate. Statistically significant associations were found between operator status and school year when compared against student-teacher ratio and acceptable school performance ratings. These results add to the body of empirical knowledge about K-12 virtual schools leading up to the COVID-19 pandemic

Determining the Eye-Tracking Strategies Used in the Game Spot the Missing Object (SMO) by Simulator Malingerers, ADHD, and Non-ADHD

    • Typical evaluations of adult ADHD consist of behavior self-report rating scales, cognitive or intellectual functioning measures, and specific measures designed to measure attention. • Boone (2009) suggested monitoring continuous effort is essential throughout psychological assessments. • Yet, few studies have contributed to malingering literature on the ADHD population. • Many studies have reported the adequate use of symptom validity tests, which assess effortful performance in ADHD evaluations (Jasinski et al., 2011; Sollman et al., 2010; Schneider et al., 2014). • Because of the length of ADHD assessments, individuals are likely to become weary and tired, thus impacting their performance. Goal of Study • This study investigates the eye movement strategies used by a clinical ADHD population, non-ADHD subjects, and malingering simulators when playing a common simple visual search tas

A Score of Voices: Creating and Scoring an Original Film With A cappella Choir

    Get PDF
Film scores typically feature large instrumental ensembles, sometimes with choir added at pivotal moments. Rarely, however, is the choir entrusted with a greater percentage of the score, and far too scores explore the sonic potential that vocal music has to offer. In fact, in a recent study of 800 films, none contained a score that was completely c. Thus, the body of unaccompanied choral film scores is practically non-existent. This curious gap in repertoire inspired me to create the documentary Downstream (2023) and score it entirely with an unaccompanied choir. The full score to this new work is contained within this thesis, along with a cursory analysis and historical overview of choral music in film. Finally, as a template and test case for other composers, I provide insight and analysis into my own creative process and unique challenges and benefits afforded by vocal ensembles in film
