Defence Sector Claims Nearly Half of State Salaries

This entry includes 6 number of write-ups and 6 number of infographics (all in Sinhala)During the months of February in 2023, the newspapers, Lankadeepa, Aruna, Dinamina, Mawbima, Ada and Sandella published several articles which were discriminatory towards women. To elaborate, the following violations were spotted in relation to highlighting gender in negative contexts: Dinamina on the 3rd of February reported of a motor accident highlighting the gender of the driver who was a woman; Mawbima, Ada, Lankadeepa and Dinamina on the 6th of February reported of an arrest during a party by highlighting the gender of the women who were arrested; Ada on the 13th of February reported of an arrest during a party by highlighting the gender of only a female among those arrested, while Lankadeepa reported the same story without highlighting only women; On the 23rd of February, Dinamina, Mawbima and Ada reported of an arrest at a betting center by highlighting the gender of only the women among those arrested. Additionally, on the 9th of February, Dinamina, Lankadeepa and Ada reported of an arrest of a group of women who are told to have worked as sex workers in order to pay for higher education, while using terms such as 'surupiniyan' 'roomath tharuniyan' and 'ganika vurthiya' which are all either irrelevant or stigmatizing terms. Mawbima reported this same story using a better term 'lingika shramikayo' but also used the derogatory term 'anga wikinu' in the headline. Moreover, Sunday Lankadeepa's Sandella, on the 12th of February, published an interview with an actor which included a number of stereotyping and sexist questions related to skin color

Syndicated Surveys: Mood of the Nation - Round 05 2023 (Press Release)
Press release in English, Sinhala and TamilSyndicated Surveys by Verité Research which gauge public sentiment on Sri Lankans' various social and political viewpoints. The data is collected through a telephone interview and a nationwide randomised sample of around one thousand people is taken into consideration. The Mood of the Nation poll is conducted periodically by Verité Research and is based on an island wide nationally representative sample of responses. The sample and methodology are designed to limit the maximum error margin to under 3% at a 95% confidence interval, which meets the gold standard of surveys. The Mood of the Nation survey is designed to assess the approval, satisfaction, and confidence of the nation in relation to the government, the country, and the economy. The poll is based on an island wide nationally representative sample of responses from 1,000 plus Sri Lankan adults. The poll is conducted as a part of the syndicated survey instrument by Verité Research and the polling partner was Vanguard Survey (Pvt) Ltd. This instrument also provides other organisations the opportunity to survey the sentiments of Sri Lanka

This entry includes a write-up and an infographic (both in Sinhala).On May 26, 2023, Ada, Lankadeepa, Dinamina, and Aruna newspapers reported on the death of a woman who went to Malaysia for employment. The reports noted the involvement of another woman holding dual citizenship in Malaysia and Sri Lanka with an illegal foreign employment agency. Ada, Lankadeepa, and Dinamina highlighted the ethnicity of this second woman was a "Drawida kanthawak" (ද්රවිඩ කාන්තාවක්) in the news reports, whereas Aruna only mentioned that the woman was a dual citizenship holder. Out of the Tamil language newspapers, only Tamil Mirror reported this incident did not mention the ethnicity of the woman. Ada, Lankadeepa, and Dinamina violated the media ethical guideline to not mention ethnicity of individuals when it is irrelevant to the news as it contribute towards negative attitudes and stereotyping of those belonging to the same ethnicity
