Syndicated Surveys: Mood of the Nation - Round 05 2023
No full textSyndicated Surveys by Verité Research which gauge public sentiment on Sri Lankans' various social and political viewpoints. The data is collected through a telephone interview and a nationwide randomised sample of around one thousand people is taken into consideration. The Mood of the Nation poll is conducted periodically by Verité Research and is based on an island wide nationally representative sample of responses. The sample and methodology are designed to limit the maximum error margin to under 3% at a 95% confidence interval, which meets the gold standard of surveys. The Mood of the Nation survey is designed to assess the approval, satisfaction, and confidence of the nation in relation to the government, the country, and the economy. The poll is based on an island wide nationally representative sample of responses from 1,000 plus Sri Lankan adults. The poll is conducted as a part of the syndicated survey instrument by Verité Research and the polling partner was Vanguard Survey (Pvt) Ltd. This instrument also provides other organisations the opportunity to survey the sentiments of Sri Lanka

There were two motions at the adjournment time. 20 announcements were made by the Speaker during the 8 parliament sittings. The number of Bills and Regulations were 9 and 3 respectively. Under Private Member's Bills, there was no Incorporation Bill whereas no Bill for the public interest. There were 10 questions by the Private notice at the parliament in August 2023. 60 Points of order were raised in total, and 56 points of order were ruled as technical points of order. Only 4 were ruled as disruptive points of order in the parliament during this month. 26 statements were considered as expunged statements at the parliament. Newspapers such as Aruna, Divaina, and Lankadeepa placed greater emphasis on the age gap than on the murder itself, with Aruna further including an insensitive cartoon that could trivialise and sensationalise the incident. In contrast, Mawbima and Dinamina reported the event neutrally, without highlighting the age gap. The post juxtaposes all the headlines, inviting readers to assess which reporting approach they consider most appropriate

The title and the content of the editorial used the derogatory term "Sudda" (සුද්දා) in multiple instances to refer to foreigners based on their skin colour, despite also using correct terms "Wideshikaya" (විදේශිකයා) and "Sancharakaya" (සංචාරකයා). Media is discouraged from using such derogatory terms to refer to foreign nationals

News reportage on the incident by Ada, Dinamina, and Mawbima used the appropriate term "Cheena jathikaya" (චීන ජාතිකයා) in the heading whereas Aruna used the derogatory term "Cheena" (චීනා) in the report. Media is advised against using such derogatory terms, especially in a negative context, as it can result in xenophobic attitudes towards foreign nationals

Some of the terms that were used were "ශ්රවණාබාධිත" and "ආබාධ". The reportage in Irida Mawbima used the correct term in introduction, "ආබාධ සහිත පුද්ගලයන්", however used incorrect terms, "ශ්රවණාබාධිත", "ආබාධිතයන්" in the headlines and the rest of the article
