    The Protective Effects Of Beta Glucan Against Experimental Renal Ischemia Reperfusion Injury

    Aim: This study aimed to investigate the possible protective effects of beta-glucan against oxidative stress caused by ischemia and reperfusion injury in kidney tissue. Materials and methods: In the study, 30 male Wistar albino rats weighing 300-350g were used (n=10). Rats were randomly grouped into three groups of Sham control, ischemia reperfusion group (IR), ischemia reperfusion + beta glucan group (IR + BG). Sham group had left nephrectomy, the right kidney taken for histopathologic and biochemical examination. After left nephrectomy in IR group, ischemia procedure was applied for 45 minutes via nontraumatic microvascular clamp, then reperfusion was applied for 60 minutes in the right kidney. In the IR+BG group, rats were administered 100 mg/kg beta glucan via gastric gavage for 10 days. Reperfusion was applied for 60 minutes after 45 minutes of ischemia to the right kidney under anesthesia. Results: As a result of biochemical examination MDA values showed a significant increase in IR group compared to Sham group (p<0,05). In IR+BG group, there was a significant decrease compared to IR group (p<0,05). Tissue MPO values in IR group showed a significant increase compared to Sham group, whereas in the IR+BG group there was not a significant decrease. Also, there was not a significant difference in tissue catalase levels. Tissue GSH values showed a significant decrease in IR group compared to Sham group (p<0,05). In the IR+BG group a significant increase was found compared to IR group (p<0,05). Less damage has been revealed in the IR+BG group compared to IR group in histopathologic examination. Conclusion: All these data show that beta glucan may have an antioxidant effect on renal ischemia reperfusion injur

    Association between vitamin D levels and frequency of disease exacerbations and hospitalizations in patients with COPD

    Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a debilitating disorder that restricts the physical activity of patients who are deprived of sunlight, which is a source of vitamin D. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between vitamin D and the frequency of exacerbation and hospitalization among patients with COPD. Material and Method: In the main analysis, 303 patients with COPD (stage GOLD A to D) were included in a retrospective cohort study in Turkey. Serum levels of vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D) were measured in 303 patients with COPD and were associated with pulmonary function, AECOPD frequency and hospitalization in the previous year. Results: For COPD patients, the mean reference level of 25 hydroxyvitamin D in serum was 12.5 ng/dL. In comparison to patients with a serious 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency ( 30 ng/dL, n=34 [11,2%]), the risk was lower but not significant (incidence ratio, 0.7 [95% CI, 0.2-1.2]. In COPD patients, 25-hydroxyvitamin D rates are low correlated with 1-s forced expiratory volume (FEV1) (r=0.187, p=0.0013). Conclusion: 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency is a frequent occurrence in COPD and is correlated with the frequency of exacerbation and hospitalization in COPD patients

    Geleneksel yatırım araçlarına alternatif olarak düşünülen kripto para birimleri arasında en yüksek fiyat ve hacime sahip olan Bitcoin’dir. Çalışmada nüfusa oranla dünyanın en çok ve en az kripto para kullanan ülkeleri ve Türkiye’nin en büyük borsa endeks değerleri ile Bitcoin fiyat değeri arasındaki ilişkinin tespit edilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bitcoin fiyat hareketlerindeki dalgalanmanın 2012 yılından sonra başladığı dikkate alınarak 2013 Ocak ve 2021 Mayıs dönemi aylık verileri kullanılmıştır. Temel istatistik özellikleri belirlenen serilerin eş bütünleşme ve Granger nedensellik testleri ve VAR analizi kullanılarak finansal ilişkisi tespit edilmiştir. Danimarka, Japonya, Türkiye, Nijerya ve Vietnam borsaları ile Bitcoin arasında incelenen ilişkide yalnızca Danimarka ve Japonya borsalarından Bitcoin’e doğru tek yönlü bir nedensellik tespit edilmiştir. VAR analizi sonucuna göre, Danimarka ve Japonya borsalarındaki artışların Bitcoin’de düşüşe sebep olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Sonuç olarak Bitcoin fiyat hareketleri ile borsa endeksleri hakkında fikir verilebileceği ortaya çıkmaktadır. Bu doğrultuda, yatırım tercihlerinde çalışmaya konu olan borsa endeksleri ve Bitcoin arasında portföy çeşitlendirmesine gidilerek riskin en aza indirilmesinin yararlı olacağı düşünülmektedir

    Effects of Fiber Type and Number of Layers on Modal Analysis of Laminated Composite Plates

    The goal of this study is to examine the effects of fiber type and number of layers on modal analysis of laminated composite plates using finite element and Taguchi methods. Modal analysis was carried out by finite element software ANSYS in accordance with L9 orthogonal array which has two control factors such as fiber types and number of layers. Optimal levels of fiber types and number of layers were determined using analysis of Signal-to-Noise ratio, while importance levels and percentage effects of control factors were performed using analysis of variance at 95% confidence level. According to results obtained from this study, the maximum fundamental natural frequency value was calculated using boron-fiber-reinforced laminated composite plates with three layers. Numerical and statistical results obtained from this study can be useful to select the appropriate fiber types and number of layers for laminated composite plates

    Accuracy of emergency physicians' interpretation of computed tomography for urgent-emergent diagnoses in nontraumatic cases

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the accuracy levels of the emergency physicians (EPs) managing the patient in the interpretation of the urgent?emergent pathological findings in thoracic and abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans. METHODS: The EPs interpreted the CT scans of patients who visited the emergency department because of nontraumatic causes. Then, a radiology instructor made final assessments of these CT scans. Based on the interpretation of the radiology instructor, the false?positive rate, false?negative rate, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and kappa coefficient (?) of the EPs’ interpretations of the CT scans were calculated. RESULTS: A total of 268 thoracics and 185 abdominal CT scans were assessed in our study. The overall sensitivity and specificity of the EPs’ interpretation of the thoracic CT scans were 90% and 89%, respectively, whereas the abdominal CT interpretation was 88% and 86%, respectively. There was excellent concordance between the EPs and the radiology instructor with regard to the diagnoses of pneumothorax, pulmonary embolism, pleural effusion, parenchymal pathology, and masses (?: 0.90, ?: 0.87, ?: 0.71, ?: 0.79, and ?: 0.91, respectively) and to the diagnoses of intraabdominal free fluid, intraabdominal free gas, aortic pathology, splenic pathology, gallbladder pathology, mesenteric artery embolism, appendicitis, gynecological pathology, and renal pathology (?: 1, ?: 0.92, ?: 0.96, ?: 0.88, ?: 0.80, ?: 0.79, ?: 0.89, ?: 0.88, and ?: 0.82, respectively). CONCLUSION: The EPs are successful in the interpretation of the urgent?emergent pathological findings in thoracic and abdominal CT scans

    Precision cutting is a method used for the manufacture of sheet metal parts with narrow dimensional tolerances and where the cutting surface quality is desired to be much superior compared to conventional cutting methods. Sheet material properties and the design of the cutting die, ironing clearance and machining parameters are important factors in precision cutting of metals. In this study, the precision cutting and ironing process for the crank felt made of DC04 EN10130 cold rolled steel quality sheet metal with high impact resistance and strength, which is used in the production of automotive spare parts, was investigated by the finite element method. In the study, the simulation results with a cutting gap of 1, 3, 6 percent and a spinning ratio of 0.5, 7.5%, among the mold geometries designed for the target geometry, and the experimental results were in good agreement with each other

Fetih Yılının Eşiğinde Alanya/Alaiye ve Alaaddin Keykubat Sempozyumu”nu başarı ile tamamlamıştık. Alai ye’den Alanya’ya, fetihten Cumhuriyet Dönemine kenti ve fatihini, tarihi, kültürü, coğrafyası, dili, eğitimi, sanatı ve mimarisi olmak üzere akademik olarak her yönüyle ele aldığımız Sempozyumda, yüz yüze ve eş zamanlı olarak çevrimiçi gerçekleşen 13 oturumda 53 bildiri sunulmuştur. Sempozyum dahilinde 2 sergi açılmıştır. Bilimsel prog ramların yanı sıra sempozyumun kimliğine uygun nitelikli sosyal programlar ile katılımcılarımız Üniversitemizde ve Şehrimizde misafir edilmiştir. Sempozyuma sundukları desteklerinden dolayı Antalya Valimiz Ersin YAZICI’ya, Atatürk Kültür, Dil ve Tarih Yüksek Kurumu Başkanımız Prof. Dr. Muhammet HEKİMOĞLU’na, Türk Tarih Ku rumu Başkanımız Prof. Dr. Birol ÇETİN’e, Alanya Belediye Başkanımız Adem Murat YÜCEL’e ve Alanya Turistik İşletmeciler Derneği Başkanımız Burhan SİLİ’ye şahsım, Üniversitem ve “800.     Effect of the forecast air temperature change on the water needs of vines in the region of Bydgoszcz, Northern Poland

    The climatic changes observed in Poland are manifested by an increase in air temperature, but not an increase in rainfall, which causes an increase in the water needs of plants, and hence the necessity to develop irrigation systems for crops. The aim of this study was to assess the water needs of grapevines in 2021-2050 in the Bydgoszcz region (northern Poland), an area with high requirements for supplementary irrigation. The calculations were based on the expected changes in air temperature according to the climate change scenario for Poland: the 4th Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change-Special Report on Emissions Scenarios: balanced scenario (A1B). The average monthly temperature in 1981-2010 was used in the calculations. The water needs of grapevines were estimated using the reference evapotranspiration calculated using the Blaney-Criddle equation, and then using the crop coefficient and potential (crop) evapotranspiration. It was found that in 2021-2050, the water needs of grapevines, both during the growing season (May-September) and during the irrigation period (June-August), will increase by 6%. The highest and significant increase in water needs, by 10%, should be expected in August. The estimated increase in water needs of grapevines indicates the need to development sustainable irrigation systems for vineyards in northern Poland

    Investigation of the Antiepileptics on Levels of Vitamin D and Calcium

    Aim: We investigated the connection between D vitamin and factors such as the type of antiepileptic agent, patient age and gender. Methods: This retrospective case-control study enrolled a total of 301 participants, including 141 epilepsy patients with (n= 120) without drug (n=21) regimens followed up in Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University neurology outpatient clinic and 160 healthy individuals who applied to the neurology outpatient clinic for different reasons from January 2018 to January 2021. Demographics, detailed history, use of medications, duration of antiepileptic use, plasma 25-hydroxy Vitamin D and calcium levels were determined. Results: The mean level of Vitamin D was 15.46 in the epilepsy group and 16.95 in the control group. Level of D Vitamine did not differ significantly by groups (p>0.05). There were no significant relationship regarding age and vitamin D levels in both groups while decreased Vitamin D levels were detected epileptic women. Vitamin D level was below 20 in 69.6% of healthy control group, 78.9% of carbamazepine users, 62.5% of lacosamide users, all lamotrigine users, 66.7% of levatiracetam users, and 72.4% of sodium valproate users. No significant connection were detected between levels of Vitamin D and the drug used (p>0.05) while a significant association was confirmed only between calcium levels and carbamazepine (p<0.05). Conclusion: Vitamin D and calcium levels can be found to be low in antiepileptic users; however, except for the calcium levels in the carbamazepine group, this decrease does not constitute a significant difference

    Clinical and radiological characteristics of pulmonary actinomycosis mimicking lung malignancy

    INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary actinomycosis, clinically and radiologically, mimics abscess, tuberculosis, and lung malignancy, resulting in misdiagnosis or delay in diagnosis. In this study, we analyzed the clinicoradiological features of pulmonary actinomycosis, the presence of any differences between clinical prediagnosis and radiological diagnosis, and whether imaging modalities help distinguish pulmonary actinomycosis from lung cancer. METHODS: A total of 22 patients who had a histopathological diagnosis of actinomycosis in a tertiary health center participated in this study. Of these, 14 had positron-emission tomography/computed tomography. RESULTS: In all, 81.8% of the patients were males. The diagnostic procedures employed for the diagnosis of actinomycosis were surgery in 54.5% of patients, fiberoptic bronchoscopy in 36.4% of patients, and rigid bronchoscopy in 9.1% of patients. Radiological and clinical prediagnosis showed malignancy in 31.8 and 40.9% of patients, respectively. The mean of the maximum standardized uptake value was 6.33±3.6 on positron-emission tomography/computed tomography. Kappa compliance analysis revealed that clinical and radiological diagnoses were significantly compatible with each other and that radiological pre-diagnoses were not superior to clinical diagnoses (?=0.701 and p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Pulmonary actinomycosis shows high metabolic uptake in positron-emission tomography/computed tomography, and this may mislead clinicians for a diagnosis of malignancy. Our results suggest that positron-emission tomography/computed tomography does not help distinguish pulmonary actinomycosis from lung malignancy and does not provide a clear diagnostic benefit to the clinician, so pathological diagnosis is necessary
