Perception and management of Oestrus ovis human myiasis by physicians: Exploratory survey in an endemic area (Italy)
Background Myiasis caused by the sheep nasal botfly is endemic in countries where sheep and goats are largely reared, while humans serve as incidental hosts. Ophthalmomyiasis in humans caused by Oestrus ovis is documented globally but is most prevalent in Mediterranean countries, highlighting the significance of this myiasis as a neglected disease. Method A thorough questionnaire covering frequency of disease occurrence, seasonal patterns, and management of O. ovis was forwarded to clinicians in Italy gathering data from 100 respondents across diverse regional and occupational backgrounds. Results Majority of respondents were from endemic areas of the Southern Italy and main islands, like Sardinia (52%) and Sicily (42%), with 81% representing physicians. Notably, 31% of physicians reported treating ophthalmomyiasis cases, while 80% expressed interest in further information. Seasonal trends revealed a peak during summer (χ2 = 29.429, df = 4, p < 0.001), notably among outdoor workers in contact with farm animals (χ 2 = 18.059, df = 2, p < 0.001). Diagnosis relied on symptoms or parasite detection, with ocular regions being the most common site of infestation. O. ovis was identified in 13% of cases (χ2 = 20.368, df = 3, p < 0.05), with physicians emphasizing the importance of removing larvae painlessly to avoid complications. Finally, physicians reported the efficacy of mercuric oxide ointment and the use of topical povidone-iodine for ocular localization, combined with antibiotics and corticosteroids. Conclusions Diagnostic challenges and the persistence of recurrent infestations highlight the need for enhanced disease surveillance and clinician knowledge to effectively manage and mitigate the impact of ophthalmomyiasis as it continues to emerge as a significant public health concern
Beyond commerce: insights on Phoenician transport amphorae from funerary contexts in the central-western Mediterranean
Since the early stages of Phoenician presence in the central-western Mediterranean, numerous funerary contexts have been distinguished, often characterized by the presence of transport amphorae. By focusing on archaic Sardinia and extending the analysis to other Phoenician sites in the western Mediterranean, including Carthage, between the 8th and 6th centuries BCE, a non-episodic occurrence of commercial amphorae within necropolises is evident. These were adapted for uses other than transportation. A thematic focus on the documentary framework of Sulcis area (southwestern Sardinia) highlights contexts of significant interest for defining the chronology of production/use and providing insights into local productions. Throughout the discussion, consideration will be given to the function of these transport containers within tombs or in direct connection with them, aiming to elucidate the essential features of a phenomenon documented across the central Mediterranean as well as in the westernmost regions and the Atlantic coasts of the Iberian Peninsula
Mountains of Change: Economy, Tourism, and Heritage in Sardinia
This study examines the socio-economic and cultural transformations in Sardinia’s
mountainous regions from a historical and anthropological perspective, highlighting
the shift from polyculture agriculture to intensive pastoralism and recent heritagisation
and economic diversification efforts. Using historical sources and ethnographic
methods, it identifies three critical phases: traditional agro-pastoralism, a decline due
to migration and industrialisation, and a revival through tourism and heritage branding.
Today, local initiatives aim to integrate traditions with new economic opportunities,
promoting quality certifications and cultural identity, underscoring the importance
of local resilience in adapting to global changes. This analysis offers insights
into broader trends affecting mountain communities worldwide, where heritage and
tourism are relevant strategies

Frontal polymerization for rapid low-energy synthesis
Frontal polymerization (FP) is an exothermic polymerization process in which the reaction propagates as a self-sustaining wave-like front, powered by locally generated heat. FP has emerged as a reliable strategy for converting monomers into polymers, with minimal external energy input limited to the initial triggering of the reaction. FP is characterized by high polymerization rates and conversions within a short reaction time. It has been successfully used for synthesizing thermoplastic and thermosetting bulk polymers, thin films and (macro-to-nano) composites with interesting properties. In this Primer, we introduce the basic concepts of FP, explaining the general mechanisms, the suitable monomers and initiators, and the experimental factors affecting the overall FP processes. We then provide the reader with a troubleshooting section to avoid most of the common mistakes made by early stage scholars who are not familiar with FP experiments. Finally, we cover applications, future trends and emerging FP strategies designed to expand current capabilities and overcome limitations
