Professionalization of Translation in Burundi : Case of Translators Working in Language Industries
A Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of Master of Arts in Translation and InterpretationSince Burundi has adopted a multilingual policy, it has become a fertile ground for the development of translation as a professional occupation. When Burundi has become a member of different regional and international organizations and platforms, translation has gained a paramount importance in bridging effective communication to reach local people and connect them to what is going on around the world in regard to their respective country.
The present study intended to address the main question which is: to what extent is translation in Burundi professionalized? To address this question, data was collected using a questionnaire with close and open- ended questions. The study was conducted in Bujumbura and Ngozi. In this way, 25 translators from 22 language industries settled in these two areas participated in the study. The analysis of data was done through quantitative descriptive techniques with qualitative analysis (by displaying the number and the way they practice the occupation were discussion-centred) and interpretation of data from open-ended questions. The main findings showed that trained translators are still few in a huge domain like translation.
Furthermore, there are many ethical flaws in the practice of translation in Burundi if professionalization is to be considered. This is due to the fact that practitioners are not all trained in translation. And the fact that most of them did not get any training of upgrade about translation as a profession comes to complicate the situation. Some proposed solutions constituted the recommendations for this study. Existing academic training institutions should be encouraged to undergo refresher courses and improve their services in their domain of expertise.
Finally, translators should be the first to make a step in creating associations. That is, any legal framework that would help this trade evolve professionally by collaborating with the government and training institutions for this purpose.
The existing training institutions such as the University of Burundi, in its Master programs of translation should include subjects on how this profession can be upgraded with a professional status

Disentangling Temporal Trends of Clade Ib Monkeypox Virus Transmission in Burundi
article de rechercheUtilizing mpox case data from Burundi between August 2024 and April 2025, we calibrated a mathematical model to quantify the temporal trends of clade Ib monkeypox virus transmission. The model outputs indicated a declining overall transmission trend. Children aged 0–4 and 5–9 years were estimated to be at higher risk of infection compared to older age groups, while sexual contact was inferred to contribute up to 50% of the overall transmission
In the Buye health district, 5% of children under five suffer from acute malnutrition, including 2.3% with severe forms, exceeding the WHO acceptable threshold of 2%. Few studies in Burundi have examined the impact of women’s empowerment on child nutrition, despite the importance of addressing social inequalities in interventions.
Methodology : A case-control study was conducted in Buye health district involving 120 mother-child pairs (children aged 6–59 months), including 40 cases of severe acute malnutrition and 80 controls, randomly selected based on inclusion and matching criteria. Data were collected through a KoboCollect questionnaire and analyzed using Stata 15.1 (α = 5%). Variables with p < 0.20 in bivariate analysis were included in the final model, and those with p < 0.05 were considered significant. The model’s reliability was confirmed by the ROC curve.
Results: Factors associated with severe acute malnutrition included maternal employment (OR=0.008; 95% CI [0.00–0.13]; p=0.001), severe household food insecurity (OR=30.56; 95% CI [2.05–454.6]; p=0.01), participation in socio-cultural events (OR=0.02; 95% CI [0.00–0.23]; p=0.002), husband’s decision to seek children healthcare (OR=24.61; 95% CI [1.32–457.8]; p=0.03), husband’s unilateral decision on harvest use (OR=0.11; 95% CI [0.01–0.85]; p=0.03), woman’s income-generating activities (OR=0.21; 95% CI [0.01–0.71]; p=0.02), and woman’s decision on the daily composition of meal (OR=0.10; 95% CI [0.01–0.71]; p=0.02).
Conclusion : The study emphasizes the importance of an integrated approach to strengthen women’s empowerment to improve child nutrition by promoting their employment, household food security, and community engagement, while considering family decision-making dynamics
This study explores thepsychosocial factors influencing the reintegration of individuals who have experienced psychiatric disorders, focusing on internal factors, the support of mental health professionals, and community support.
The research adopts a qualitative approach based on the qualitative analysis of data, with interviews as the primary factors for gathering direct information from participants. The study field is the CNPK (National Center for Psychiatric Care) in Bujumbura, specializing in psychiatric disorders. The target population includes adults aged 18 to 65 who have had psychiatric follow-up for at least one year, ensuring the relevance of the testimonies.
The results show that the success of reintegration depends on several key factors. On one hand, internal elements such as resilience, self-confidence, and an understanding of the illness are crucial. Despite the risks of relapse and persistent stigma in society and the family, participants demonstrated their ability to overcome these obstacles through better management of their illness and effective coping strategies.
On the other hand, the involvement of mental health professionals, such as psychologists, sociologists, and occupational therapists, plays a fundamental role. Their support during and after hospitalization helps reinforce behavioral strategies, ensure proper medication management, and facilitate adaptation to daily life. This approach also contributes to maintaining the psychological balance of individuals and promoting their reintegration into
society and the professional environment. Community support is essential. Although stigma persists, some members of the community have positively contributed to reintegration by offering resources such as support groups,
income-generating activities, and financial aid. This has allowed individuals to better integrate
into their social and professional environments
Mémoire Présenté et soutenu publiquement en vue de l’obtention du Diplôme de Master en Socio-anthropologieThis study explores the working conditions of security guards in private security and surveillance companies in Burundi, focusing on the Mukaza commune as a case study. Despite their essential role in the security of property and people, security guards are subject to precarious working conditions that compromise their well-being and their social and professional recognition.
The main objective is to analyze the impact of these conditions on the agents' professional satisfaction, particularly in terms of recognition and respect for their rights. The research is guided by three hypotheses: widespread professional dissatisfaction, an ambiguous perception of the usefulness of their profession, and a link between low unionization and the exploitation of agents.
The adopted methodology is qualitative. Data collection relied on semi-structured interviews conducted with agents (unionized and non-unionized) and supervisors, supplemented by direct observation at the workplace. Information sources were diversified (written documents, electronics sources, and oral testimonies).
The results of this survey highlight extremely precarious working conditions: excessively long hours, lack of adequate rest, job insecurity due to the absence of written contracts, lack of social coverage (Heath insurance), and insufficient work equipment. These factors, aggravated by a low rate of unionization, confirm a feeling of exploitation and lack of recognition.
In conclusion, this study establishes the existence of a phenomenon of structural precarization of the security guard profession in Burundi. The main recommendations aim at the urgent improvement of the legal framework of the sector and the strengthening of social and union protection structures for these workers
Mémoire Présenté et Défendu Publiquement en vue de l’Obtention du Diplôme de Master en Didactique des Sciences PhysiquesFaced with the many persistent challenges in science education in Burundi, particularly in the teaching of physics, this thesis set out to examine the contribution of CRDS in its partner schools. The general objective of the research was to analyze the actual impact of CRDS interventions on the teaching and learning of physics, to assess the current situation, and to propose perspectives for strengthening and expanding these efforts. To achieve this objective, a qualitative approach was adopted, allowing for the cross-analysis of viewpoints from various stakeholders. Data were collected through written questionnaires, semistructured interviews, and focus groups. These instruments were administered to a sample composed of physics teachers, students, the school administrative authorities, and CRDS-affiliated researchers. The target population included all partner schools, notably the Lycees of Makamba, Muramvya, Cibitoke, Etoile des Montagnes d’Ijenda, and Communal Lycee of Rusaka. The results indicate that CRDS support has had a significant impact. There has been an improvement in students’ success rates in physics, a more positive perception of the subject with a reduction in the belief that it is overly difficult, and increased motivation among learners to pursue scientific fields. The study also highlighted the enhancement of active teaching practices through the use of didactic materials, reinforcement sessions, and ongoing training for teachers. However, some limitations remain, including insufficient material resources in certain schools, the need for continuous follow-up, and better coordination between teachers and CRDS researchers. Ultimately, this thesis underscores the meaningful contribution of CRDS to improving physics education in Burundi. It also emphasizes that further efforts are necessary to consolidate these gains and to embed science quality more sustainably within the national education system.
