    ADHD in College Students

    Get PDF
College can be an exciting time in life however for many the experience can be tarnished by lack luster living conditions that amplify the negative effects on mental disorders. College is a demanding environment; for students with ADHD (Attention deficit hyper activity disorder), it is even more challenging. For people with this neuro-development disorder, executive brain functions may override healthy or effective processes that would help people to perceive time, focus, manage multiple tasks, and organize students are expected to manage school, work, a social life, chores, and more all while living alone for the first time in most of their lives. Many college students move out of their parents’ home and live at school. While attempting to navigate the high stress environment of college, students with ADHD are put under even more stress trying to make sure their ADHD does not interfere with their success. Living at college is a challenge in itself, but for students living with ADHD it is even more difficult. In order to have an improved quality of education and overall college experience they need to have a home that aids their specific needs. Low quality housing is also connected with poor mental health development. The quality of college housing can be improved to support students’ mental wellbeing. As for students with ADHD we can make specific changes to their living environment in order to improve the issues they face. Focus on organization, eliminating external stimuli by conscientious lighting and acoustic design choices, and manufacturing an environment where these students can focus. These changes will help these student flourish in their education and personal life

Traumas Effect On Children’s Development, Spatial design as intervention: The role of interior design in supporting children with trauma

    Get PDF
After facing trauma, young children react emotionally, physically, and mentally in efforts to protect themselves from past or present trauma that they have faced. Young children may not always be able to recognize that the dangers they once went through are roots of trauma that have not been correctly addressed within their life. These roots may now be the result of uncontrollable behaviors, emotions, and reactions. After analyzing the lack of resources some families and children may have, a space that is uniquely catered to the children who are facing or have faced trauma that provides balanced schedules, particularly focused needs for a child’s well-being, one on one time with caregivers, and space for developmental milestone growth is necessary. This center will take into consideration abuse, poverty, and parents’ mental health roles on children’s trauma and the effects it has on their age developmental milestones and emotional health. This research evaluates childhood developmental stages and the impacts trauma has on childhood. It has been identified that not all children are emotionally, mentally, and physically best supported in traditional daycare spaces. For children who have experienced or are experiencing trauma may not find enough support within these traditional spaces. While some caregivers may have a background in providing clinical support, the surrounding environments also need to support the increased needs of children who have experienced trauma

Female Reception of Stained Glass Images of St. Anne in Late Medieval York: Women, Mothers, and Wives

    Get PDF
This article explores the depiction of St. Anne in the late medieval stained glass of three York parish churches. Focusing on two iconographic subjects, St. Anne teaching the Virgin Mary and St. Anne with her extended family, it argues that the representation of St. Anne in these contexts speaks to the conscious orientation of iconography towards female members of the laity. Images of St. Anne may have served to reinforce specific roles and values by providing a focus for performative identification. In addition, they reflect women’s status within the family, the parish, and society as a whole. This under-explored area of enquiry, namely the depiction of women in stained glass, is shown to serve as a useful lens through which to examine women’s reception of devotional imagery. By addressing the relative scarcity of women in discussions of medieval stained glass, this article contributes to the ongoing expansion of art-historical methodologies to embrace gender and women\u27s studies. The analysis of medieval stained glass from a gendered perspective is in its infancy, and this article shows that further research into the ways in which late medieval women perceived, interpreted, and embodied the stained glass images they encountered in their local parish churches would be both revelatory and fruitful

The Benefits of an Occupational Therapy Lens Within a Gymnastics Center to Promote Greater Inclusivity and Cohesion in Classes

    Get PDF
Inclusive programming has become more prevalent in many occupational pursuits for children, including that of leisure pursuits, or activities that a child engages in during their free time as they bring a sense of purpose and/or reward (Woodmansee et al., 2016). A major leisure pursuit of young children is organized sports and one that has demonstrated benefits for kids of all abilities and is growing in popularity is gymnastics (Gitimoghaddam et al., 2019; Mak & Cheung, 2018; Campain, 2014). While the benefits of participating in an inclusive gymnastics program are high for all children involved, the most benefits will be available only when the staff is sufficiently educated (Campain, 2014). Thus, the objectives of this doctoral capstone project were to create educational materials on developmental, sensory, and behavioral differences for gymnastics staff, provide in-the-moment modifications to activities, and review and modify class curriculum for all kids served by the organization to allow for greater inclusivity within classes. Through these objectives, the importance of task analysis and the lens through which activities are created and implemented was demonstrated, with the goal being for coaches to demonstrate increased confidence in leading challenging classes successfully
